insult + injury.
i had to sneak under an enemy task force and invasion fleet, to get back to my harbour. needless to say it was a bit worrying the state i was in :)
my base is all but lost i dont think it will be there when i finish my next run.

You should be dead not complaing about sharks. Poor damage model there.

I guess that confirms that Damage does not actually coralate to real damage you can manage its just a graphic.
I was hoping they were tied together better.
Or are you dead in that pic? LOL. I hope your dead. Cause if your still floating around with damage like that. :o

its hard to say if damage is just a graphic.
in that pic my pumps were still working, and i didnt go below 20metres
in another mission, i took similar damage, and as soon as i went to periscope depth i just kept going down. my pumps were damaged on that one.
i think its mainly just a graphic
i must admit. i dont fully understand the graphic on the sub, the hole at the back left a chunk of deck missing too. and i limped home,. that said diving in that sub took forever.
but on ships the damage you see is correct to the damage you cause.
i also cant see a flooding readout on my ship, so it was hard to tell if that was my downfall when diving with the second sub, that said the second one had half the side blown out.
if i had to hazer a guess i would say the damage shown above mainly floods the boat, and cause a huge decrease in max depth. my sub there is tested to 75 i beleive. it wouldnt get anywhere near 40 with the damage show ( after reloading the game to find out it would go to 20 and back up. but anything less ran random results, all ending with death.)

LOL no pump in the world would help with that damage. Oh well at least it looks cool.:sunny:

what i mean is assuming i was flooding ( i can not find a meter that measures this in SH4) then the lack of a pump would have been an understandable death for the second instance in wich i died.
granted visually the model says "im dead" but its just like in il2 you cant model every single bullet hole on the sub, no computer would run it. although il2 does a wonderfull job you know that a bullet in the wing doesnt mean that is 100% exactly where you were hit.
but il2 does make it so that damage is visually correct to physical damage, so a bullet hole does nothing. a huge hole in the wing and you know you cant fly as well. i think this is where SHIV went a bit wrong. meaning i see a crator and its actually nothing, i see a scratch and im dead.
so i think this graphic is just for looks, unfortunatly i think the graphic above should be reserved for critical damage to the boat, rather than what i had.
if you follow me :)
say my boat looks like that i know i cant submerge..
but if my sub is able to submerge, then a lesser damage graphic should be show.
depth charges seem to do nothing at all. visually i mean. in all cases where ive been holed its been from artillery. i really need to look at the back of those boats before i blow my ballast :)
Were you using realistic damage?

yeah its set to realistic.
in terms of "damage report screen" i think the behaviour of the boat is realistic.
im pretty sure the graphic is simply missleading.
Maybe the holes are in the ballast tanks?

In SH3 your compartment fails or floods you die. In SH4 if you have a gapping hole in your sub like that, the same thing should happen. So in your anology of IL2 while every bullet can't be modeled losing a wing is and with those holes, you missing a wing.

like i said i think the graphic is just misleading.
im hoping to see a patch where this damage ( shown on my sub above) is only shown when critically damaged.
i think at the moment its a bit touchy. you take a scratch and half the subs missing, but operational.
you get rammed by a battleship, and see no damage, but you sink.
there must be something somewhere, some variable that decides when to show "that graphic" and if that can be fine tuned in a mod, all will be well.
but i already said i think its simply a missleading visual. its not the kind of problem that will effect most. as they wont have externals.

Fish are friends, not food! :rotfl:
Seriously though, I can laugh about it (and hope you can too) but I'm pretty confident that my own sub will look like that from time to time too. In a way I'm curious to see what it'll look like when the repair crew is fixing it. :yep:
