View Full Version : So who is actually *HAPPY* to have a Pacific subsim?
With all the bitchin' and moaning about what is and isn't in the game, who is actually happy to have a subsim in the PTO?
I know I damn well am, there''s a massive shortage of PTO games of any quality in sims, besides a few arcade ones we've only got the half baked pacific fighters expansion and SH4.
Not to sound like a Mickey Dee's advert, but i'm lovin' it! :yep:

I'm happy !! Just hoping the guys who made the subs in real life dont come after ubi like they did with pacific fighters and shut em down. Although I can't think of anything huge that's missing from the sounds of it! If you can't tell I dont have it yet, called my local eb games and they told me SH4 is not being made anymore LOL Guess I'll just order online.

Agree. Not played in the pacific theatre for a long long time, so it's nice to be back. It's funny you mention Pacific Fighters, because this is looking to be fairly half baked as well.

I am!!!!
I've been re-reading Silent Victory in anticipation of SHIV, and can't wait to get back in an S-Boat in the defense of the Phillipines. Not taking anything away from SHIII with the fantastic GWX expansion, but I just find the Pacific Theatre much more interesting.

It's good to be back in the Pacific once again. SHIV will have problems but the modders will rev it up and it will be fine.Just look at SH2 and what a "train wreck" it was. The modders saved it for all of us. They did an outstanding job with SH3 also.Just look at GWX 1.02. WOW!!!!! :D

I'm excited!
Where the Atlantic battles were great and the games fun - I really have been waiting to go back to the Pacific for a long time.
FINALLY - my dreams are coming true with this new release. I'm sure bugs happen, no game is PERFECT. (If it was, there would never be a need to create another)
Can't wait til my own copy arrives here in the USA!
I am very happy with the game overall. A few nasty bugs like target speed not working but the game is fun and very nice. I'm confident that we will se a patch coming real soon fixing the worst bugs. I got the Deluxe box and i can say that its awesome :)
For instance, when a torpedo hits a ship the crew on deck crouches with their hands covering their heads...many small cool details in the game ;)

IIRC, Northrop-Grumman demanded an excessive amount of royalties from Ubi and Maddox Games if they included anything Grumman or any other company in their conglomeration. This essentially shut down any additions of US aircraft in patches and updates. :stare:

Wow !...A posative post and indeed whole thread about SHIV, Do you want a cup of coffee, splash of rum in it ?...hold on I'll get that for you.:)
It makes a nice change to see a post/thread like this with so much other negative vibes on the forum...I was just about to quit subsim...mind you they are at it on Ubi forums too:roll: I cant get away from it.
Yes Ok so the game needs to be patched, er...nothing new there then. But its nice to read that you say "the game is fun and nice"
Just as long as it's playable until patched them I'm easy !

Yes - UBI/Maddox made a big mistake by using phrasing like:
"Grumman TBF Avenger" instead of "TBF Avenger" - and then they didn't ask permission on top of that. So...the lawyers at NG got into a huff and ensured that add-on patches did not include any additional US models. What went missing you ask? How about a dynamite looking Devestator and a very cool model of the USS Yorktown. A real pity that UBI was so foolish and NG was so greedy.

Not going to happen. Subs are made by US ShipPorts that are bought and paid for with US tax dollars.

Back in the Pac for a good attack
I love the Pacific theatre and am quite happy to be in it again. I think it's even more suited to my own tastes, though I'm not abandoning my U-boats either.
This is gonna be a lot of fun. Hopefully all the more fun once we get some mods and patches to balance it out more nicely...

Pacific is very welcome indeed. Haven't been there since Silent Service II. I still have the manual and I've re-read it while waiting for SHIV to arrive. Still a great read as all Microprose manuals. Those were the days...

I'll always be an Atlantic guy. I enjoy the boats better, and the lone wolf taking on an entire convoy, and the campaign going from easy to hard verses hard to "where did all the targets go?" :)
However any REAL subsimmer will like enjoy and be excited about either, and that is my position as well. I often find (ever since IL-2 for sure; big learning experience) that historic games like this can drive you to learn a lot more about the history. Atlantic, pacific, air sea ground, it doesn't matter. Learning more about history is always a good thing. I'll be reading up on my pacific history while I play, rest assured.

I'm not happy. US WWII uboats are weak. I wish this graphic level would be in SH3...

And of course the bugs are awful...

// off topic// As was previously noted, we call them "S U B M A R I N E S." AND historical records prove without a doubt that they were FAR from weak. A thought, I'm sure, that was shared by the Japanese Empire at the time. Maybe you should spend a little time reading the history of that theatre of operations before making such a statement. :stare:

I don't see how the planes are different. The manufacturer has its own designation for an airplane, but when it's called e.g. P-51, it's the Air Force designation and it's fully payed for with US tax dollars.
There is a similar stir in modelling community where some companies want royalties for their airplanes and there was a try to organize people to call their congresmen to support a bill which would prevent manufacturers to ask for royalties for military designated aircraft which are paid for by tax dollars already. Not sure about the outcome, though..

Theres the crux, you can use TBF Avenger all you like, thats the USN desegnation, but the second you call it the Grumman TBF Avenger, you're using corporate property and intellectual property, like you couldn't make a commercial emulator called Atari as a modern emulator and market it without their permission.

The pacific theatre seems so much more interesting for a submarine game when you look at maps. Islands all over the places, sounds, straits, belts. Japanese warships and carriers too.
While I found it a great challenge to cruise the atlantic, there were times when it started to feel a bit monotonous chasing the same convoys in the same water all the time.

I think that the Pacific offers more of an opportunity for that exiting Hollywood effect that many sims can lack. It also doesn't hurt that for alot of the war the US is kicking ass, which is the opposite of Germany.
But then again some of the most exiting moments in all of gaming for me have been while cruising the depths of the Atlantic just outside of a convoy that I've just attacked, slowly creeping away, wondering if I was found... waiting... then siddenly I hear a faint ping, then louder then louder... "DEPTH CHARGES IN THE WATER!"
FLANK SPEED! HARD TO PORT!
Then the sound of the DD's engines as he rolls over me and leaves a white wash on the cold dark water... the silence of the u-boat after my burst of speed... wondering about when the charges go off if I've avoided them or just sailed right into my own hell...
BOOM! Breaking glass... the ships bellows and howls as its tossed under the waves. Darkness as the lights break and then I wait for more...
To me the Pacific feels like a bright and shiny tropical paradise, like FarCry in a boat. The Atlantic feels eerie and brooding. Its like everytime I leave port I feel like I'm sailing into a chapter of Moby Dick.
But I'm gonna give SH4 a good go. If only to give me a reason to read up on the Pacific Theatre in real detail.

Me too!
I'm more than 100% sure I'll be happy when I have it, which with a little luck should be any day now.
I like the change of scenery. From what I understand we'll be sailing from Pearl where the weather usually is a lot nicer than Kiel or Brest later on was for me in SHIII. I've seen my share of rain, fog and thunderstorms, even an ice berg on one occasion, and now it's time for catching some sun. :smug:
At least it isn't:
Silent Hunter 4: War of the Bath-tub.
Where you play as a little kids toy submarine and have to sink the toy boats...
"Soap in the water!"
"FLANK SPEED!, HARD TO PORT!!!"
"Were taking damage sir, major flooding!"
"Blow balast!"

Nope...those aircraft are also bought with Tax payer dollars. And the names assigned to them are often selected by the military. While I agree that companies have a right to protect their products and product names, they shouldn't be adversarial over it.
Getting back on topic...General Dynamics owns Electric Boat Company, who has been building most of the US Submarines for the past 80 years or so. GD takes a very good approach to licensing its products, all it requires is the company to donate to the "Toys-for-Tots" program run by the USMC for permission to use its products for toys or Models. There is a local model importer who is trying to get Congress to pass a law that defense contractors cannot collect royalties on DOD bought equipment. Its still working its way though Congress the last time I checked.
