View Full Version : Please convince me SHIV isn't just SHIII W/ grafix improvements???

I was really looking forward to this game but after hearing the initial reports I really skeptical now.

FOR INSTANCE:

It seems that the rez is still locked at 1024x768 no FSAA forcing...

Missing sounds or reused sounds from SHIII...

Less crew movement activity than SHIII...they don't move around at all...

Less crew interaction..you can't click on them...

Unable to click on stations and controls to use them...

Less informative damage control screen...

Less sub interiors...

And unfortunately the list seems to grow as more are getting the game.

It actually seems that this series is moving backward. Maybe the Devs just rehashed SHIII and were cut short by UBI for development time. :damn:

Now, before I run out and make a purchase here...please convinve me that this game is a worthy purchase and step forward in the series from SHIII with all the latest mods?

Good question(s). But I think for an apples-to-apples comparision it should be a Stock SHIII to Stock SHIV comparison. Not a SHIII+all latest mods to Stock SHIV comparison.

When MS Flight Sim X came out tons of people that had:

FS2004 + Ground Enviroment Pro + Flight Enviroment + ActiveSky + FSGenesis Landclass and Mesh(all professionally done payware mods) + vast amount of freeware mods that are available, said...

"My FS2004 with all these payware and freeware mods looks better than FSX."

But I can assure you that once FSX versions of all those mods are available and installed that FSX + mods would blow away FS2004 + mods.

If you look at Stock FS2004 versus Stock FSX then you get the real picture.

Just my 2 cents

From the sounds of things there are some reasons to get SH4, such as the enhanced campain ect...once its modded it will get even better.

But from a resolution standpoint and being released with bugs and incomplete there is certinly some argument that its just Sh3 with a few enhancements.

I would say its worth it, but your not going to be really happy till it gets modded, which should be fairly quick since the modders are used to sh3 already.

If your a graphics junkie you may be disapointed about the resolution and fsaa aspects tho, and I doubt they are going to change.

same here, the core of the game is there, and it looks very promising, with a few patchs and mods this game is goni to be sh3 now or better.

Its well worth it. There are some rough edges but all in all , i can see gold that has a thin layer of dirt coverin it.... where is the sweeper when we neeed it...

What game does force FSAA if the card does not support rendering HDR and FSAA at the same time?

Missing sounds or reused sounds from SHIII...

I doubt the water or engines in the pacific sounded dramatically different from those in the Atlantik. So what?

Less crew movement activity than SHIII...they don't move around at all...

I'm fine with that, but judging from the videos, they moved a *LOT*. You're sure it's not only your PC?

Less crew interaction..you can't click on them...

If you call clicking them interaction, you definitely should go out more.

Unable to click on stations and controls to use them...

Nothing new here. As it was said before, you're the Captain, not the bow-dive-plane-dummy. The instruments are working and informative, that's all they're there for.

Less informative damage control screen...

Not really. The damage-control is improved and it lets you assign priorities better, even for different teams in the sections.

Less sub interiors...

Less than what? What other rooms were modelled in SH3 - did I miss anything?

This is an extremely rude thing to say to another. Don't you think you could find other sources of self-esteem than attempt to feel superior to others (and doing this through absurd interpretation)?

Charlie901, there's a pretty high chance that not only will most/all bugs be ironed out, but also the addition of more features (i.e. read dev-answers on the ubi forums, they even mention it in the last answer, something about already placing enough code in place for writing your own log entries and hinting at enabling it in the future).

And if u r just tryin to make a light joke, just put j/k or something so we know. Cause we dont get the benfit of tones in words...

Well, I'm sorry if you think this is rude. :shifty:

All this whining just get's on my nerves and this post is really not one of those that brings any real and/or new arguments to the debate. Sure, it's fun to click a person, but you can just click the button to the same effect and with the off responses and not really life-like reactions, calling this "interactive crew" just sounds, well, a bit odd. If at all, you can access the stations options through the officers, that's all.

Actually Stock FSX maxed looks better then anything Fs2004. The problem is nobody can play a maxed FSX when released, which caused people to use lower Playing options which then brought the FS2004+ to look better then FSX. :p

You can change the resolution to whatever your system supports.

Yes you can change the rez. But some have reported the only thing that changes is the dials which are 2d. The 3d part of the game stays at 1024*768 and is stretched to fit a higher resolution. There have been a number of people saying this so I'm tending to believe its true now.

Well, the screenshots showing the dials and 2d interface changing size but the 3d window remaining the exact same resolution certainly make a compelling argument for that point - LOL!

Ahh yes you can. But from what I've read here and at the Ubi support site, that does not increase the resolution of the 3D engine - it just ups the resolution of the overlying 2D items (the depth guage for example).

This is presumably why the lack of FSAA is so apparent even at seemingly very high resolutions, and why people with distinctly average computers are able to crank the graphics settings to max and still get decent frame-rates....

Theres no doubt that il be happy with SH4  I have no problem with most of the current issues the game seems to have...... But this Rez sounds like quite a problem. The picture on My monitor looks rubbish with any rez below 1600x1200. Its standard is 1920x1200 so even 1600x1200 is pushing it. If the max for the 3d eye candy is going to be 1024x768 then i have a problem

Dunno, for me SH4 at 1600x1200 looks better than at 1024x768 on my 21" CRT.

Missing sounds or reused sounds from SHIII...

I doubt the water or engines in the pacific sounded dramatically different from those in the Atlantik. So what?

What about crewmembers? They apparently are rather silent at important times (e.g. flooding and impending death), and at other times, quote numbers over and over

Less crew movement activity than SHIII...they don't move around at all...

I'm fine with that, but judging from the videos, they moved a *LOT*. You're sure it's not only your PC?

I think the OP said that he/she did not have the game yet and were trying to determine whether it was better than SH3.

As for the crewmembers - personally I don't care that much about them graphically, but if they're there, they should behave reasonably well. From what I've read so far, they are subject to some graphic "anomalies".

Less crew interaction..you can't click on them...

If you call clicking them interaction, you definitely should go out more.

Admittedly clicking is not much of an interaction. However if you want a simulation of submarine operations (or any ocean going vessel for that matter) then you should include a simulation of the crew interaction.

It appears that, rather than increasing this element, SH4 may have reduced it a little compared to SH3 (which wasn't all that great anyway).

Unable to click on stations and controls to use them...

Nothing new here. As it was said before, you're the Captain, not the bow-dive-plane-dummy. The instruments are working and informative, that's all they're there for.

Here is where the lack of improved crew interaction becomes apparent. It appears the crew in SH4 are less able than they were in SH3 (which was fairly poor). Additionally, it appears that some (important) instruments are not working (stadimeter for example, stop watch probs, radar and sonar may have issues, the AI can't fire the deck gun properly etc).

The problem with any sim like SH1/2/3/4 is that they really should model a full working crew and the players interaction with the crew, if they wish to be a simulation. However, sometimes the player wants to have the option of doing some of the work because they find it enjoyable/necessary/efficient.

No sims seem to have managed to strike an optimal balance between these two aspects. Dangerous Waters is probably the best in terms of auto-crewing, but there isn't any feeling of the crew being in that game since you can't see them...

Less informative damage control screen...

Not really. The damage-control is improved and it lets you assign priorities better, even for different teams in the sections.

I can't say whether it has improved - some people feel the missing damage representation in 2D is a step backwards from SH3.

However, the lack of sustained damage has been mentioned, so it may be that patches and/or mods may be required to see if the new damage system is really working.

Less sub interiors...

Less than what? What other rooms were modelled in SH3 - did I miss anything?

I presume he's referring to the Captain's Cabin. Not a loss in gameplay terms from SH3 but some may feel a loss of immersion.

It is not merely a 'sub'sim, but a sub-captain-sim. The crew is integral to sub operations, and the captain can only run a sub through his crew. The idea is to have the captain interact with the crew in various ways (related to submarine operations, hopefully).

Judging from the criteria above, it's easy to speak of anything involving player (who is captain) and crew as "crew interaction", no matter how small.

I'm used to buggy games. Anyone should by now.

I think the modders will soon fix the stuff that people are annoyed over. And I'm more than certain that a patch will be released very soon. It seems to be a standard by many game devs. to release a patch almost as soon the game hit the stores, to fix some of the major problems....then it will just roll along.....I'm not worried at all. I'll buy the sodding game as soon as my computer is back from repairs:)
