View Full Version : Intel on Diving Depth?

For those who remember the early days of SHIII, you might remember that many of the subs beyond, say, the Type VII had much the same tolerences for crush depth, even though the boats were decidedly very different as the war progressed.

Given it looks like a lot more are starting to get the game, I'm just busting to know what our test/crush depths are looking like here. I noticed crush depth is unimpressive visually and especially in the sound department from the "first impressions" post, but I'm wondering whether a Gato starts crushing at Test depth of 300, or are we able to go down farther? Is it variable or static?

So any word on this? Has anyone deliberately tested to see if if those builders did their job right?

I'd like to know too, but don't confuse test depth with crush depth. If they were the same, every sub would be lost in trials :)

S Class - Test Depth - 60 m
Pourpoise - Test Depth - 75 m
Salmon Class - Test Depth - 75 m
Sargo Class - Test Depth - 75 m
Tambor Class - Test Depth - 75 m
Gar Class - Test Depth - 75 m
Gato Class - Test Depth - 90 m
Balao Class - Test Depth - 120 m

in my experience you go much below those and your not comming back up.

Crush depth should be roughly double the test depth. Emphasis on "roughly".:dead:

Hmm. Well, they are different and that is good on test depth but I sure hope what Sailor Steve said is more in line than what you're saying. Sounds like they don't have a very large safey margin under test depth.

It may yet need tweeking. Time will tell. Happily we know this is possible as it was done really quickly in the mod community in SH3, so I'm not too worried.

Theres the one of the first things that get modded i'll wager. Nevermind that 90 meters is 295 feet, it just looks bad is all. What was the average, deepest recorded dive for a gato and balao anyway?

What was the test depth? Its early and i havent had coffee yet. Im just curious is all.

I can't be sure, but many numbers have been brandied about around here. I think the most we've CONFIRMED for sure is 600+, since that's as far as the depth gauge went. I think that was on a Balao, but I'm not sure. I've also read 715 around here, but, even if true, it's likely very rare.

Regardless, this is considerably more than what they've got so far (from reports anyway, I don't have the game). But yeah, this'll likely be one of the first and probably one of the easier things, at least if it works the same as SH3, to mod.

Probably not far from some of these numbers. The Gato did have a test around 300 feet. The Balaos had a test depth at 400 feet.

damage has a more realistic effect than before. i took a holed sub down to 40, and it wasnt possible to come back up.
you really take your life in your hands now if you go under whilst damaged

I was just looking at a book on the history of submarines from the 1600s to the present, and they had this to say about the Balao class: Test depth was 400 feet, and calculated crush depth 900 feet.

Further than that I can't say; but I agree in thinking that in the game they ought to be in some kind of feet!

Agreed completely Steve. I love the metric system (I know, traitor to America I am) because of the ease of conversion and such, but this IS an American boat. I DO NOT want meters in my American boat. If the option to turn to imperial isn't implimented, I think that mod will have to come even before the crush depth mod.

IIRC Dick O'Kane brought the USS Tang down to 600' whilst supervising the sea trials of his boat.

It sounds like they took "test depth" as crush depth. :shifty: Mod time!
