Obversations on sinking liners

While I was raiding NY, some ships took one eel to go down (medium merchant and tramp steamer). Of the three liners, three of them sank w/ two eels. The large tanker sank w/ two eels. Tug boat sank w/ one.

What you mention seem reasonable. Most small to medium ships will go down with one torpedo. For large ships usually two torpedoes do the trick, although some times you can actually hit them on the "sweet spot" and blow them up with a single hit.

I sank two liners on Dec. 16th, 1939, 0415 hours, at the southern edge of where AM51 and AM52 meet (GWX). Both took two fish but were sunk almost instantly, both shot near the rear stack. Might have got away with one fish each in the bow, but I wanted to get clear of the now rather ticked off escorts.

BTW, there are four (!) liners in that little convoy along with four destroyers, steaming at 21 knots. If anyone is starting a new career, it's a nice way to rack up some massive tonnage in very short order. The four stacker alone was 41K GRT.

You guys must be luck I never seen a liner in the Atlantic,I have to go and raid a harbour for a liner.

I find liners to be sort of weak - i usually try with one torp. If it's a keelshot near the stern, she usually goes down eventually.

yeah pyros have many sweet spots hehehee:arrgh!: They also appear to have delays before exploding. I hit a pyro with one fish, hoping to hit the sweet spot, but it kept on going albiet slower. Determined to sink it I followed her for several hours, was lining up another torp, but before I could fire it went KA-BOOM and sank! :yep:

Guess it took a bit for the fire to spread to the pyro. :hmm:

You may be joking, but, I once had to use 3 torpedoes to sink a tramp steamer, and no, that is not a joke. Its honest facts.

Some times it happens but as a rule of thumb one torpedo should be enough for small ships in GWX
