View Full Version : As much as we want detail and immersion, its also important to have some hands off...

This may be a small thing, but it would add to immersion.

I personally love manual TDC, but in SHIII I felt to hands on, I felt like I was actually plugging the information into the TDC and pushing the firing buttons. What I'd like to see is my observatiosn being fed to crew who do that actual inputing and pressing of the firing buttons.

So, im looking through the periscope and I chose a Angle on Bow of 45 deg. Once i choose it, I want to hear the Skipper call out, "Set angle on bow to 45 deg!" I then want to hear the TDC operator repeat the call out and input it followed by , "set!" I want the same process to be followed for all the other info i feed the operator. I want o have him tell me the TDC is set, I want to be able to ask for solution checks to make sure the TDC is showing the same info as Im seeing as the target continues on its way. So, I'd call out a TDC, "solution check!", the TDC operator reports back bearing and distance info the TDC is spittig out so I can check it with what Im seeing in the scope. I want to be able to yell dynamic bearing info to the operator, for instance. I have the scope's cenetrline on the center of the ship during the TDC solution process, but I can then move the center-line to another part of the ship, giving me a slightly different bearing that I can have relayed to the TDC operator and fed into the TDC so I can actually aim each torp at specific places along the length of the ship. Each time the TDC opertor repeats the info and confirms by yelling, "set!"(or randomly some other similar word or phrase, so you dont sick of hearing it).

When i fire the button, I want to hear the Skipper yell out the tube and fire, the first officer/XO, whomever will repeat the order and hit the fire button himself. I'll hear the reply and hear the button get pressed in the distance and notice the slight delay in the firing of the torp. This will make it feel like a crew/team effort, and that Im not in my own little world once I set up for a shot and execute.

Now if we had that in SHIII let me know, its been awhile since I played...but i thought i remembered everything being a bit too much at my finger tips.

End of the day, the more buttons they stop me from pressing, the safer my crew is :D

Got to agree that this would have been an amazing immersion-rising feature. These game would greatly benefit from more voice interaction with your crew. Also, having several different lines for the same event would also help.

I also have some questions for skippers who already have the game, and have digged a little deeper into it.
(SH3 veterans prefered ;))
Still desperately waiting for the review from Neal Stevens...

Most postings by posters already have received their game copy are just related to graphics, i´d love to get some infos about game mechanics...

So here are a few questions:

What about running on the surface with electrical engines, is it possible in SH4?
Would be usefull to avoid acoustical mines (if the developers had included them)
and sneaking around in calm seas...
It would be great if someone could post some details about possible engine controls...
-----------------------
Can the player switch the interior lights manually (saving batteries, avoid detection..)
or is it done by the sim automatically like in SH3?
-----------------------
Will the watchcrew change clothing if the weather changes from rain to sunny, or will they stand in full raingear forever, like in SH3?
-----------------------
Will the AI run into their own minefields, like in SH3?
Is the external Camera bug with mines present in the area solved?
-----------------------
What about AI fired Torpedos? Are they in?
-----------------------
What about pin-point DC drops, did they solved that issue?
-----------------------
Is the save game bug solves? i guess it is after reading some postings here it is...
-----------------------
Is it possible your sub is loosing oil permanently?
-----------------------
Hows the spotting ability at night (watch crew, ai controlled vessles)
-----------------------
Is the sub taking water when running deep?
Bilge pumps (very noisy) modelled?
-----------------------
Can the Ai fire Guns at radar contacts?
-----------------------

Screenshots always welcome, would be great if some lucky skipper who has the game already could find some time to answer at least one of the questions.
I guess my copy wont arrive until saturday or even next week, so it´s hard seeing other fellows already playing.

Would also love to read an after action report by a skilled captain.
