Something really weird happened tonight. I'm off Aberdeen, okay, about 100 miles east of it when all of a sudden damage control goes wacko. Bad flooding! Get to the battery room! We're all gonna die! Arrrgh!!!!! Mommy!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that maybe some destroyer put a shell into our side on the surface and my frackin' lookouts did not see it in the storm.
I reload the game and put us to periscope depth silent running. Same thing happens!
I'm barking orders through my voice interface big time. Emergency Surface! Damage control! Depth under keel!
We go to the bottom. KLANG! Boom! Bang! Diesel is completely under water, moderate flooding in other compartments but damage control shows they are working on it. I'm thinking "any chance of pumping out the diesel spaces?" when the game ends.
Could I have hit a freakin' mine? Depth under the keel is reported as 70 meters before the incident.
Anyone ever seen anything like this? Seamounts? Is spontaneous combustion modeled or something? Hydrogen buildup and someone lit up? WTF?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are mines in GWX, not sure about stock though.

There have been a lot of threads on this.
Like NeonSamurai says, if you're playing GWX there are a LOT of mines off of England, as GWX models the East Coast Barrage. See this thread for a map:

This isn't in stock.

there are mines in stock SH3
but there are not many of them and they are usually only in shallow water and are not free floating type, they are anchored to the sea floor.
I hot one once just outside of the channel. went down all the way to the sea floor (i guess it was about 40 meters) and i had maxed out flooding in the bow quarters and bow torpedo compartment. she was resting on her bow on the sea floor with the stern sticking up at about a 60 degree angle.
damage control showed both compartments red and filled with water - of course i had already moved everyone out of those compartments so thankfully no casualties. i just blew all the ballast, and put a damage control team on it. after we sat in the water on the surface for a while with the stern sticking up in the air, the watch tower barely above water and the bow still a good 10 meters below the surface and no more compressed air it was mostly fixed and we went to flank speed to Wilhelmshaven.
we never got all the water out of those forward two compartments, i was surprised we got any out since they were filled with water. i would say they were about 1/4 full all the way back to port.
but there are mines and nets in stock SH3 there just arent very many of them

Don't know is it mine or something else, but last night when returning patrol back to base.
I was 18 meter deep, silent running and Der Kanal...krash, whiiiisssh etc... :arrgh!:
So there I sat bottom canal, 42 meter deep and orders damage group work... at least flooding get stop and slowly up and forward 2 knots...
Damage result:
- Attack periscope
- Observation periscope
- Radio antenna
- Hydrophone
- Radio
- Forward batteries
- Deck Gun
Hull integrity still 97 %
Well, it's long trip when speed is 2 knots :yep: but we make it

If a mine can do that to a Liner....

@snakeyes
There are a few mines in vanilla but in GWX almost the entire eastern coast of The British Isles is sown with the feckas. You can open up the campaign layer in mission editor and see them. :arrgh!:
