Fresh water is vital on board a submarine not only for drinking, cooking, and washing, but also for storage batteries, boilers, and as a cooling agent for the diesel engines. An American World War II submarine on a war patrol required a minimum of 600 gallons of fresh water a day. Beyond this, remaining water supplies should leave enough for each man in the crew to have a bath at least twice a week. Cooks were normally required to bathe every day, for obvious reasons.

Man, I hope you didn't believe the propaganda on that on.
First off there was only enough water left over for the cooks and mess cooks. The rest of us got a G.I. shower once a week.
Second there is no washing machine on board, and your locker does not carry a full sea bag.
Mother was not there to make sure you were a clean little boy.
So the games would begin....and I don't mean drop the soap.....hahaha.
The Torpedomen would start a contest on how long anyone on board could go without showering, shaving, brushing their teeth, and changing their clothes....The Stinkiest Guy would win the pool..........Man That's why it's called a "Pig Boat"
The "Nuke Boys" will never understand it, Right Geetrue, and Leeclose?

Until the advent of Nuclear power submarines were always limited in there supplies of "fresh water" There were showers aboard and they were used for allotted minutes only....

Hehe, well I don't think that is propaganda, just a historical site. I hope the cooks and whoever was the medic did wash though. BTW was it not possible to wash clothes with seawater, or did you just carry enough clothes for the patrol? :hmm:

Well we could have used seawater, but there was no washing machine. We would wash out our skivvies, and socks in the wash basin once in awhile. And there were no maids, darn it.........

Wearing clothes washed in seawater is worse than wearing them dirty.

My Dad used to come back from a patrol, Mom would make him strip in the car-port (P.H. Navy housing), then burn his dungarees in a metal trashcan. There was no way they were ever coming clean.
