View Full Version : Which sub will you be most interested in?
Out of all the options? (http://www.marinesims.de/site/silent-hunter-4/sh4-35.html)
I'm tempted by the Porpoise, as I like smaller subs, but I suspect the most popular will be one of the Gato offshoots.

I voted Gato cause maybe it´s the best of em !

Well, actually the Balao was an improved Gato.
I voted Sargo, simply because I like S-boats but the early fleet boats have me interested now.
I don't know.
But I'll play all the key types eventually!
Really, I think it's a case of S-boats vs. Early Fleet Boats vs. Fleet Boats
I expect to spend most of my time with Fleet Boats as such; otherwise it's sorta like playing the whole war in SHIII on a Type II :p

I voted Balao because I like their conning towers alot more, they were much simpler than the gato conning tower in my view, and they had different types of radar than the gatos

Gato, just for tradition. But, of course, I'll play them all. I wanna try S-44 vs. Kako for example.

No love for the Tambor?
USS Tautog (SS-199). If you want a chance to run up a score, the Tambor/Gars are the ones to do it with, but remember, 7 of the 12 in the class where lost. You go out often enough to dangerous places, they are going to get you.
I really havent read much about any of these subs, and I have to admit I am a tad clueless on this sub class stuff.
How many crew members were roughly on each class? anyone care to educate me?
That S18 and Porpoise looks cool, they all look rather simular though so I don't care :p
S18 has a nice Interior though, looks nice and open.

Well, to be honest I don't know enough about any of them to make an intelligent choice. I've heard of Gatos most often, though, so I voted for them. (I also played that platform on the old Silent Service II.)

I preferred the Gato Class. I created a new skin under the name of USS Rasher (SS-269). The Rasher was one of the best USS subs during the WWII in the pacific :yep: . You can find information at http://www.ibiblio.net/hyperwar/USN/ships/SS/SS-269_Rasher.html (http://www.ibiblio.net/hyperwar/USN/ships/SS/SS-269_Rasher.html) :hmm:
Also there is good book by Peter T Sasgen “Red Scorpion: The war Patrols of the USS Rasher”.:arrgh!:

I hate to do this but I can't resist commenting that the Redfin (pictured above) was a Gato class ;).
My favorite? Start the war in an S or a Porpoise in Pearl and look forward to upgrading as I can. I kind of prefer the Gato though. It's test depth of 300 feet means I'll take it to 400 in a pinch and the escorts can still give a little trouble there. At 500 feet in a Balao though, it's too easy to get away to be challenging.
Cheers!

Balao for me. Hey Rockin Robbins, how do you customize your sub like that? I want to add the battle flag for my USS Balao (and update it for my kills) and also do a similar design as you have for the bow.
SARGO because my first patrol on a HARD campaign, I torpedoed the Kongo with her!
4 tubes fore and 4 tubes aft combo I like. Makes for a nice broadside fan...
S class all the way.
It's odd, with the U-boats I loved the IX but for some reason when it comes to fleet boats I just can't turn down an old rust bucket like the S-42.
Early war, S boat. Just a fun, almost Type 2 like boat (though really closer to a type 7 minus the rear torpedo. I like the older style hull with the vertical bow, and fish like fins. The S-24 later on has a neat looking yet ugly tower. But this boat simply cannot keep up with faster convoys.
Mid war? Any of the early fleet boats really. They really look the same, aside from the sargo with the muffler bumps.
Late war, Gato, or Balao. They just look and operate awesome. The Balao great for hitting a convoy and diving deep under the layer.

I'm a Tambor fan myself. I guess it has something to do with the beginning stages of combat patrols against Japan, the excitement that comes with finding your way against a new enemy. The early fleet boats were so untested in combat, that there were so many 'discoveries' being made on war patrol's. It all makes for some gripping encounters and good stories.:-?

Tambor class for me also, especially the USS Tambor SS-198. She was my first command many years ago when I first joined the PTC. :yep:

S-42 Class. Current carreer in the S-46, SS-157. link@ http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08157.htm
It seems I eat less depth charges In S boats then the larger fleet boats in both Silent Service 2 and SH4. Less detectable to active or passive acoustic sensors? CL

Loving the Balao I've got right now, but my best SH IV moments seem to mostly be with the Sargo class. Was planning on taking one for my next career when I finally try manual targetting.

Originally I said S-Class. Of late, however, I've been stacking the deck with the most capable sub at my disposal for that fun, a-historical feel.
