Why would missions start before the US is at war? :88)

Although it'd be cool to have a pearl mission (as Tautog, for example, which got an air kill during the attack) - I don't think that's a requirement.

Haha, what war?

It's an American subsim; there weren't no war for the Americans at the time - nor the Japanese, at least at sea (though China was an ongoing issue of course).

So, sure, you can probably change the date - but eh, what would you do? Cruise around the pacific soaking in the sunshine and waving to neutral Japanese merchants? :sunny:

How many enemy ships did American submarines sink between September 1939 and December 1941? None, because we weren't at war.

How? You are playing as a U.S. Navy Submarine Commader. U.S. Submarines were not involved in the war until Dec.7 of 1941. You have from Dec of '41 until aug of '45, thats plenty of time to get sinkings in a very target rich Pacific Ocean.

Gosh, you guys don't know anything!

There was a secret submarine war that started in 1939. That is how the U.S. forced Japan to attak Pearl Harbor later on. The OSS was sinking Japanese tankers secretly outside Tokyo bay.

The submarine used, the USS Noam Chomsky, was commanded by a guy named John Stockwell, and later went on to run cocaine from Laos to Berkely and Dallas in the 1950s and 60s to fund CIA activities. When Kennedy tried to stop these activities, the rouge submarine and its CIA crew used the mess boy, Bernard, and gave him a new name, L.H. Oswald, and then sent him on a patsy mission to 'get' the President, which he badly flubbed, of course.

Later this most infamous of GATOs spirited the real Saddam Hussein and the Iraq WMDs out to the new Cobra lair near the North Pole. Cynthia Mckinney was going to blow the lid on all of this, so she had to go too.

Don't any of your guys watch the History Channel?

Oh wow. I am sorry but I just laughed my head off at this. :D And so soon after stating in another thread that too many people have a U-Boat centric view of things.

The game needs to start - in the Pacific - when the US is AT WAR! It would be quite the international incident for you to be going around in your S-boat sinking Japanese ships in - say the summer of 1940. :o

:yep:

Quite unknown to the Americans, Yamato was the first ship to land on the moon in 1940

In all seriousness, to CCIP's comment about Japan not being at war either (at sea) except for China. Well, my reading has indicated that the Japanese Navy was involved in supporting the Army's campaign in China, kind of like the USN did later in Vietnam, or in the Atlantic after Allied landings in Italy and France. Their naval airpower was involved, and even used from the carriers sometimes, and ships provided support (gunfire etc.) even saw a pic of a DD (not a frigate or such but a fleet DD) in the Yangtze. OF course, China had no real naval opposition, but the IJN was peripherally involved in a shooting war.

What, the britishers have sold her? ;)

And yes, I realize about the naval support in China, though in all fairness it's but a fine point which I fully realize. Not really a war at sea in the sense of ship vs. ship fighting. In the same sense, while the navy might be involved in American operations in Iraq or Afghanistan today, and Navy personnel are involved in combat duty, I don't consider them sea wars.

I don't think we had a naval war as such since the falklands, right?

Anyway, even a hypothetical 1939 naval war wouldn't be all that interesting. The Kriegsmarine would be crushed a lot more quickly with a full American committment; the Japanese would also have a rather incomplete naval buildup; the Fleet Boats would be in their infancy. So I think that's a case where a what-if isn't as interesting as the real thing was. :hmm:

I remember weeks ago we had a thread started by some guy who wanted to avenge Pearl Harbour on day one by taking his sub out of Pearl Harbour on December 7th and attacking the Japanese carrier fleet single-handedly as it cruised off Oahu. I think we eventually convinced him it wasn't gonna be possible given the surface speed of a US sub and that of the average Japanese surface ship, plus the vast distance away the Japanese were when they launched the attack.

I think they could start in 39 or any other year if they wanted.

Wouldnt there have been sub patrols just for normal military operations and security ? You wouldnt be allowed to attack but you could patrol and watch.
Boring for some I know, but some people would like the quiet time before the war, so you are immersed at the very beginning.

That being said, I think its a pearl harbour start.

Let the poor troll die. It's enough to kill him, vivisect him, and put him on display. Strapping him across the hood of a jeep like road kill is a bit much.

Yea, it would rock to commision a Gato and have to do sea trial, weapons certs, and sail her to the pacific. Good chance to get in some crew training and experience the shift of ROE. It would do a lot for the immersion factor.
