View Full Version : Deapth keeping and hull integrity
I've been playing SH3 on and off since it came out but i have never gotten really good at it so i still concider myself a newbie. The last couple of days i have really gotten into it but i have a few issues i need to get over before i can go on those 100k runs...
The first issue is keeping deep. I was hunted by two DDs and tried to hide on the seabed but as soon as my speed dropped below 2 or 3 knots my boat got buoyant (does it spell like that) and started floating upwards. The same when i was lurking at periscope deapth, waiting for a convoy to get into the shooting angle. All of a sudden half my conning tower was above sea level and the DDs started blasting away. Is there any way to keep the boat at a steady deapth without moving?
The other issue is not as big as the other one. I just wonder where i can see my hull integrity. I thought it was on the crew management screen but it aint there.
Im running GWX 1.02 and no other mods. Thanks in advance!

I belive there is a mod for your mod that negates the GWX positive boyancy, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to provide details - link so you can fix your mod.

Welcome aboard matey.
I think this might be what you're looking for

GWX removes the hull integrity indicator by default. You can restore it either through SH3 Commander or editing the en_menu.txt file (Change the 589= line to 589=HULL INTEGRITY %s %)
GWX adds positive buoyancy to the u-boat at low speeds. The lower the speed the greater the effect. Near the surface its a matter of a couple of meters. At 0 or 1 knots you will rise about 3 meters above the depth you've set (which is why at the default periscope depth your conning tower pops out of the water). At 2 knots, you will rise about 2 meters and at 3 knots maybe a meter or less. You have to manually set your depth lower than what you actually want. Above 3 knots its not a problem.
At lower depths however, the depth you will actually be at, versus the depth you set, can be 20 or 30 meters (even more). If you don't like this there are a couple of neutral buoyancy mods around (as danurve and robbo180265 have already pointed out). Note that these can effect other things like the boats behavior on the surface as well.

The overall concensus is that keeping a static u-boat trimmed at a specific depth in a perfect fashion wasn't really that doable in reality, hence GWX introduced the "weird" effect that you are now experiencing. As allready stated, you can "mod the mod" to bring it back to stock behaviour, or just simply set your depth a bit lower than what you want so that the boat later rises to what you really want. Periscope depth, in particular, is set to around 12 meters vs the 15 meters that the periscope can rise. Take advantage of this and manually set your boat at around 15 meters when you plan to be stationary around enemy contacts... if the boat rises a couple of meters you'll still be completely submerged.
Awesome, thanks for the tips. I will mod the game to show the integrity again and try to live with the more realistic buoyancy of the GWX mod.
Thanks again lads, now, off to the atlantic.
The previous comments cover it all. Welcome aboard, Matey :D

There will be another patch soon for GWX that will address your buoyancy concern as well as other changes.
And yes, SH3 Commander (which I highly recommend) has an option to turn on Hull Integrity as well as many other neat things.
Stayed tuned..

With just RUB, I've noticed the boat having negative bouyancy.
Sometimes, when I slow down to 1 or 2 knots my boat starts to sink.

i think in real life uboats were made to have bouyancy dunno why though so i suppose it just adds to the realism in gwx

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Otherwise many more boats would be lost. Ever heard of trimming systems? Quite a lot of effort went into this:

ah yes i am wrong, i just remember a post somewhere that someone wrote that they were made to rise slightly in water.
