Can anybody help a fellow IXC Kapitan? I've made a very dumb mistake on my long patrol down to the Cape. Foolishly once I crossed the Equator I thought I would head for a lone island (middle of FM grid) which looked harmless enough and it turns out to be THE main Yank airbase in the whole of the bloody south Atlantic!! :damn:

I'm playing the new LRT 1.32 mod and as you probably know airpower has been made far more deadly now as I'm increasingly finding out. The weather is ****e so I can't use my AA guns even if I wanted to, and I have survived 3 depth charge attacks but my sub has been badly damaged in the aft section (1 prop destroyed, 1 badly damaged) which has seriously inhibited my forward momentum (can only achieve 1 kt).

So fellow kaleuns what to do? Everytime I surface to get much needed air the bastards are waiting for me above. I could possibly reload my savegame on the Equator and bypass this deadly area but I like to play DiD so that is a last resort. Ideas??? :hmm:

Also is it historically correct to have aircover in this region at this time (Oct '42)?

id suggest surfacing then put your speed at the most fuel economic speed then head home
if it fails
try reloading the save and by-pass that spot:arrgh!:

But that's the blimmin' problem I can't surface for more than 5 mins before my RWR detects an incoming plane. I'm too far from base with this amount of damage. Is it possible to repair destroyed equipment at a Milchcow do you know? :hmm:

If so I can head for my refueling rendezvouus with U-459 and do makeshift repairs there only problem is only got to do another 2000 kms!! Wish me luck!

Your options;

Scuttle,
Fight it out on the surface.....then scuttle,
Stay submerged till everyone is blue in the face from lack of air, then surface and scuttle,
Did i mention scuttle.

As far as I know it's not possible to repair at a milk cow. I think the only choice you have is to try and reload your batteries with short runs on the surface. Just because you get an RWR warning does not necessery mean you have been detected. Try to stick on the surface until you can see the plane, then dive, swith off your engine and wait for the plane to leave, surface again and repeat until the batteries are recharged. Then run submerged as long as you can, repeat as often as necessery.
But altogether, if you realy can not go faster than 1 kts you are probably done. Sooner or later a plane will get you because you can not dive fast enough. Do you even have enough fuel to reach the milk cow at 1 kts?

You could try surfaced but with decks awash - about 1 - 2 m deeper than when completely surfaced. It should cut down on your crash dive time substantially.
Put some distance between you and the airbase, try to sail surfaced at night at the highest speed you can run at whilst still having the range to get back to base.

Or you could hit the escape key & choose the "teleport to base" ;) option.

Thanks fellows all good advice I'm sure. Hehe my fault for going in the lion's den I s'pose. My actual surface speed at flank is currently 5 kts so no worries there but it's my submerged speed that's the killer! And I imagine if I lose the other prop I'm screwed right? Funnily enough despite the stb prop being 'destroyed' the underwater animation still shows it rotating!? Go figure...

I still can't believe I headed straight for an Allied airbase! What a Bernard I am! :damn:

I blew ballast and I think the gods are smilin' on me! It was peeing down with rain with heavy fog. No aircraft around (hopefully grounded in this foul weather) and I'm makin' a steady 6 kts. I'm still dangerously close to the airbase though about a 100 clicks to the west so I'm not safe yet. Rain damn you rain!

That'll be exactely how I'd do it, too.

Fair chance to get home alive and tell your crew comrades in the bar about your adventurous journey. :D

If you can make 5 kts. you're ok and you can tow Bernard behind the boat and trawl for sharks. :smug:

Better yet, weigh Bernard down before throwing him over. Let the bottom feeders have at him:D

Lol first time I've seen someone post hoping for *bad* weather! :D

Let us know if you make it back safely. There's a glass of schnapps waiting for you at the O club! :yep:

Will do matey! Finally out of FM grid *phew* and heading west of St. Helena. Boat still crippled with one barely working prop but I'm fighting hard! :arrgh!:

It would be nice if SH would model engine overheating... I suspect a damaged engine/prop shaft would be quite prone to that... should bring the fun to a 2000km trip :D

I believe SH3 Commander has breakdown/sabatoge program.

Erm ...... Does a "bottom feeder" have anything to do with the Navy Dude?

It's amazing what a difference a slight repair has done for the damaged prop - an increase of 1-2 kts. I must have been soooo close to being immobilized if I had lost both!

Nearly at rendezvous point with u-tanker, then the patrol of the Cape, and then the looong return home via the Gulf of Guinea and aim for the air gap between Ascension and Freetown (if there is one).

Will keep fellow kaleuns informed of progress. :)

In the continuing saga of this most problematic 3rd patrol of Luger and U-158 the most un-believeable thing has happened!! I made it to my rendezvous with the Milch cow in GG grid. Boat has been re-armed, refuelled and even a shiny brand new prop has replaced the destroyed one.

But... upon reloading the game (2 days have passed in game time thanks to Sh3Patrol) I ask 'Bernard' the coxwain our estimated range at our optimal cruising speed (10-11 kts) and I am absolutely gobsmacked to discover we only have enough fuel to get to the Cape Verde islands. Some sod on that damned U-tanker shortchanged us with our refill of diesel! I should go back and ram him.

So now we have to have another stopover on the way home and the original patrol grid near the Cape is out of the question... we shouldn't have left port.

We'll get home one day... in bloody 1943 probably! :rotfl:

Try setting speed at the most economical cruising speed. I'm now using a Type IXB, and I find 9 kts gives me the best mileage.
When I start off from port the navigator tells me I can cruise 22,000 km at 9 kts. :o

Won't help this time matey because being such a grognard I play with sh3commander's optional sabotage/malfunction and guess what happened when I loaded sh3 next time round? You guessed it. My range was seriously affected by some sort of malfunction. I checked this using TimeTraveller's crush depth doodad and sure enough range was brought down from 13,500 nm to 6,600nm! :o Annoying but realistic.

Makes the game so much more challenging hehe.
