If your going to play an IXD2 career game with a high realism setting, and Dead is Dead, you'd better take these with you, your gonna need em.
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/brassballs.jpg

First, let it be said that there is PLENTY of traffic in the Indian ocean.
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/gwx_indian_01.jpg
http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/gwx_indian_02.jpg

You type7 skippers, i think you can make it if you use Supply ship brake and a whole lot of submerged running, go get em.

I have developed a newfound respect for the IXD2 in relation to convoy attacks. For grins i decided to start in the 10th flotilla in 1943, and drive an IXD2 into the indian ocean. Not a big deal really, i was in the living room watcing the history channel most of the time  But on this run i RElearned something, Again.

IXD2 is *Just* enough larger to acutally be a problem.

http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/ixd_size_01.jpg
The sub on the top is a 7c. The bottom is a 9b or 9c. The middle is an IXD2.

http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/ixd_size_02.jpg
And yup, he's about that much larger.

Now ive played type9 uboats for awhile. Mostly in an IXC. I dont think ive ever had a n IXD2 career game taht didnt end up on the bottom of the ocean.

All i have more to say is i got this boat into penang, but after 3 convoy attacks, i decided taht if im going to continue using this boat, i will not attack any convoy in weather that does not have at least a 9 kt wind attached to it. The last convoy attack, i managed to put myself DIRECTLY ahead of the convoy. Not exactly where i wanted to be, it really wasnt intentionally, i just happen to be on their track. Anyway, against my better judgement i decided to gamble on the lead escort anyway.

That didnt pay off, he picked me up. I fired the only T5 on board, and the rat bastage closed the distance before the torpedo could arm itself. I crash dived. His whole barrage missed except for this one depthcharge that... as luck would have it, exploded near the stern end of the boat, damaging both propeller shafts. (Gee i wonder why it hit there ) H.I went to 85%, so i couldnt go any deepr then 230 meters. At this point, based on past experience, i was ready to throw in the towel, and accept a SH3 commander "capture".

It took all of my concenration, guesswork, foresight, experience, blah blah blah, etc whatever you want to call it, to try and loose contact with ...THREE escorts.

Three times i managed to break contact.. and 3 times they regained it. At one point it looked like i might get away, when one escort went back to the convoy.. and then.. as luck would have it.. contact was regained. ALong comes that 3rd escort BACK to the area to rejoin the the circle - with me as the pivot man. After alot of flank speed bursts and hard rudder manuevers to get out of the depth charge barragges, despair just sank in. At this piont i just said, Screw it! Put the rudder to 10 degrees to port, put the motors to ahead 1/3rd, and just sat there running in a big circle, and upped the TC. I figrue, they either give up after awhile, or they score a hit and i die, at any rate, im tired of Trying on this.

4 hours or so later they go away, or start to, i change course to go in the other direction... and TWO CAME BACK AGAIN. Glad i wasnt in that particular spot anymore.

Long story short.......

I dont think i like that boat. Got it back to port (unbeleivabley enough) but If i play another game, im gonna get me an IXC/40.

Any dedicated IXd2 skippers that play with high realism settings, my hats off to you, I don't think i have the brass thats neccessary to stick with it. :88)

The IXD2 is just too big. I mean, the IXD1 was a cargo U-boat so the IXD2 is just the battle version, its way too big.

IXC is the way to go!

IXD2 is the beast of all U-Boats, I must admit I have had short careers the longest one was 5 patrols and I think that was a bit of a fluke. But they do pack a punch if you get the chance to deliver it.

I tend to agree.

This ought to demonstrate that even more.

The following pictures were taken early in GWX's development. At the time i was on the dev team working on the indian ocean RND layers for GWX ( so i have an idea of what to expect over there, but the finiished version looks very little like the orginal version i made way back then, so its essentualy not the same thing anymore).

Anyway. the story is, i was testing to make sure the convoys appear as i had planned them to, i found a convoy and started to attack it. I was basically hit by a depth charge while crash diving and was forced to surface. The rest is self explanitory (edit: well kinda, all the other escorts in the area started shelling me, and the one ramming me got in the line of fire, hence the extra fireworks) :

I love the IXD2

Just not for convoy attacks

My IXD2, interestingly enough, was the only boat on which I survived a DiD (WaW, at that) career from 1942 to the end of the war. Just barely - I took on a few convoys with it and escaped; my tower was once rammed by a DD - in the Coral Sea of all places; the biggest enemy though were aircraft - there were at least 3 cases when I was bombed and very seriously damaged; I lost 7 crew to air attacks and came back with barely any hull integrity left...

But I guess it was a charmed boat

Yup. You'l start in july, 1943. And then they'll send you to a south atlantic grid. Whle down there, they'll tell you to refuel at brake, and then patrol the arabian sea. Then your base changes to Penang.

Sink or survive, its a one way trip. You' wont be crossing biscay bay again.

Out of curiosity I attempted what you said here. Needless to say I concur that the IXD2 is too big for its own good. I made it out of the Bay of Biscay around the 5th of July 1943. Weather was rough and I had to surface for batteries. I surfaced right away and received a radar contact off to my 270 bearing. Needless to say it being 1943 I took no hesitation in ordering the crash dive. However the damn boat was too slow getting down there and the Catalina came out of the sky and I recieved all she had which was 8 bombs or such right behind my conning tower. I survived the initial blow but flooding was to great and we went straight down before crushing at 190m.

I'll try again later tonight as I am trying to get the handle on these big boats because I'm "training" for Silent Hunter IV.

Plot your course to go AROUND freetown. Theres an airbase there, go around it , you have plenty of fuel and a resupply tanker waiting for you in the indian ocean. :88)

Don't get too close to capetown either if you can avoid it. If not, stay down by day, dawn, and dusk. Surface only at night.

The patrol has started phweeeee
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img13-3-2007_19.jpg

Here begins my 1943 10th Flotilla patrol. We are feeling good but a little sea sick. This big beast likes to rock. Up came my squid and mustard sandwich:oops:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img13-3-2007_19-1.jpg

Here comes my first trouble. I basically getting into the Bay. Nice plane but, geez, not very friendly . They dropped some care packages. I did not care for them too much

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img13-3-2007_19-3.jpg

Said care package dented my boat and wrecked the paint. I have called the insurance company and told of the hit and run incident. My crew plugged the holes with chewing gum.:shifty: All was well:up:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img13-3-2007_20.jpg

Then along came a PBY. Wagged it's wings and we waved back. It was a grand time until he also dropped a care package. Uhm, chewing gum was not going to work here.:shifty: I think I'm kicking off the gunners. We will just dive next time. The locals are not friendly.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img13-3-2007_20-1.jpg

Life was not sucking to bad. We did manage to sink this beauty. My first two torps missed. Bernard left his glasses back in Lorient. He is going to be a gunner;) . We do not plan on telling him when we are submerging on the next go around .

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img13-3-2007_20-2.jpg

Knowing that I had trashed one of Doenitz boats and knowing that Doenitz is knowing what I'm knowing. I decided to stop at U-488. When we got there, after finding them in the fog, the were knowing what were knowing. We ain't going to make it in this tub. I hope they have welding equipment. I told them to use pieces from the flak guns. We don't use them

I did hear that Penage or some foriegn type port is open. I guess I'm headed there. I wonder how their squid and mustard sandwiches are:hmm:

Adventure to continue...if the boat will. I like this boat. Lots of nice gadgets and radar things. There is a triangle thingy on the conning tower. I'm thinking of apply some cloth and add string. It should fly nicely in the breeze. I need to find a tail for it if it is to fly right. I have some sort of TV thing in the radio room. I can never get a channel in. It is always has a fuzzy green line up the middle. Oh well, I just shut it off. It makes buzzing noises and acts weird when planes are around. Maybe the planes are messing up the reception. I'll ask Doenitz what he knows about it. Oh well, hopefully U-488 will complete the repairs soon. The darn dolphins hanging around are noisy.

U-488 fixed up our tub. Coat of wax and fresh oil. Good as new. We got some more squid and mustard for sandwiches. We had a fine send off. Most of the crew of U-488 was laughing. I wonder why:hmm:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img14-3-2007_20.jpg

BDU sent a message stating I was to go to the brake for fuel. Afterwards we are to patrol the Arabian Sea. So we headed off. No ships in sight. We decide to hit Freetown to see whats shaking! Low and behold. This fat baby shows up. We are submerged in 28 meters. Not to good if a warship shows.;) Ah, we attack anyway.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img14-3-2007_20-1.jpg

We put two lovely holes in her side. Things not looking good for the soon to be junk. Some planes came in and drop DC but to no effect.

I had to send in one more torp to seal the deal. I went on about my business in getting to the brake. I will be running the single shipping lane. Hopefully some more ships will come around. It gets boring looking at Bernard all day.

Will they give me that uboot?:yep:

Sounds interesting. I've never even seen a IXD2. My balls don't clank though. My joints creak - does that count?

It is a lot of fun actually. I never went south in the boats. Ducimus asked that I give it a try. It a very large boat with a great loadout. What I find interesting is the messages from BDU directing you to the brake and then your new patrol area. This has never happened for me. Usually it is just go to grid ## and hang out for 24 hours. I started in 1943 and the planes are darn tough. Somedays just hard to get up for a breath of fresh air. Give it try, I think you will like it. BTW, we can not have creaking joints while in silent running. Get some oil on them:rotfl:

LOL i just wanted to see if you could make it to penang, Mr 2nd patrol President ;)
You always seem to run into some sort of trouble, so the fun is seeing what you get yourself into :88)

Given how much ocean you have to cover.. it could be little to nothing, or it could be ALOT. :)

Well, you have seen what happened on the way to U-488:o. My boat was chewed:oops:. I was affraid to submerge because I did not know what the hull integrity was. Took me a day to find U-488 in the fog:yep:. I can't wait to get to the cape!!! I hear it is fun there;)

The cape can be fun, or it can be boring. It really depends on how deligent you are in finding the traffic. Both times ive been down there though, i found more convoys then id have thought. Convoys seem to come in two varies. A two column, convoy with 3 to 4 escorts, or a MASSIVE convoy. You'll find more of the two column variety.

The range on the RWR is acutally helpful (maybe too helpful) in locating convoys BTW. All convoys have escorts, 30KM range on the RWR is about the same as your hydrophones. if the day is clear and calm.. dive. Remember the AI in GWX (unless you changed it) has a 30KM max distance, so on a clear/calm day, your just kinda fubar'ed if you stay on the surface.

We continue our trek southbound in the shipping lanes. All is quiet. We enjoy some squid and mustard sandwiches. Are stomach are churning some as we are moving into some uncharted waters.

In grid EU we spot this fat catch. Just as well. We have found the squid has gone bad and we spent our time running back and forth to the head. Battle stations called!!! I took up station in the head and called out orders from there;)

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img15-3-2007_19-2.jpg

It takes three torps to sink this fat catch. I missed all the excitment as, well, I was still in the head taking care of business. 7000 tons under the belt. We press on to the cape!

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q62/avgwarhawk/SH3Img15-3-2007_20.jpg

We continue our trek in the shipping lanes and come upon two tramp steamers. I hate these buggers. I sent both to the bottom and I will not tell you how many torpedos I used:oops: Too many for the measily amount of tonnage. No matter, from the looks of it I will be out of torpedos when I hit the Cape. There seems to be some decent shipping if you follow the shipping route. Maybe I will blow by the Cape, load up and head back to the Cape. Doenitz will never know:hmm:

HEH, i can't wait to see how you handle that pig under a depth charge attack. :D

Im on my 3rd patrol, decided im gonna circumnavigate the land down under and see how much of their shipping i can sink.

(although i have to admit im a bit peeved, ran into the old torpedo reload bug. My guess is it happends if you try to load external stores with no crew in the torpedo room. I don't normally do that, did just that this morning, and lost 1 external store because of it  )

Well, i could have stretched this career game out MUCH longer but i decide to end it before i lost intrest and then, not finish it at all. THen i couldnt add another patrol log to my sig

http://www.ducimus.net/sh3/u-196/u-196_final.jpg

I most definatly cut this (last) patrol short. 50% fuel and 6 torpedo's remaining. I must say though, the australian east coast is VERY profitable. Just hug the shelf along the deepwater side and you'll run into all sorts of stuff. I acutally ducked a big massive convoy in 15 kt weather. Mostly because of the heavy rain and heavy fog, but also because i just wanted to end the patrol and get back to base.

Anyway, one more log for a halfass played career game.

I noticed something weird when getting external stores moved. I could not put my finger on it. Anyway, I like this trip. Still a lot of singletons to sink. I guess I have about 6 torpedos left and I'm just leaving grid EU. As far as DC.....I'm going deep man:rock:

Beats me, i have to be honest, i don't like this boat. Ill take my IXC over this boat anyday of the week.

I do not like being depth charged in an IXD2.. i do not like it. at all. I do not have the brass it takes to be serious about this boat.

Scuse me while i go scamper back into my much smaller IXC for one more little jaunt into the carribean.

I admit the IXB was a much more natural ride
im going to need to tinker with the guts
for a while to get this to drive right.
