Good video, even if the Lead graphic designer looked unsure explaining recognition, TDC, and in particular Angle Off Bow.
Next best thing to a demo I suppose!

Great view of the working Stadimeter, (Although, didn't he say to get the split view, you have to raise the other scope!?) but on the whole nothing really new, say for the generally updated graphical look.

I was amased by the 500,000 polygon count statement for the submersible interiors. :o

That was nice to do for us. I had not really noticed how large the flags are until this video. On a couple of the small vessels, like the junk, they seemed impossible for the small masthead to support and large enough to knock them down in a wind.

Interesting video. One of the devs said it's important to "Be aggressive"! Also, apparently we now have "influence points" with our base commander rather than renown, but that may have been a translation quirk. They also mentioned "deformation" of the water wake; true hydrodynamic physics, it seems.

Darn it, I can't wait for this game! I want it NOW!

I thought it was a squid at first.

A lot of gamefish like the shade provided by large vessels, and blue sharks in particular would follow convoys to eat whatever is discarded and to have a go at the the fish exploiting the shade. Also pilotfish and other small fish would take advantage of water displacement to make travel easier and to feed off of scraps. Many marine mammals would take advantage of this and the food readily available. Shipwrecks would attract many oceanic sharks, particularly the blue and the oceanic white tip, which almost certainly has committed more attacks than any other species. I could get more specific, but I'm more familiar with the Atlantic. Any large ship in open water will be the center of a complex and large ecosystem. Unfortunately this would require an amazing amount of resources to render, and it's much more difficult to render organic creatures than shipping. I doubt we'll get it if they had to drop things like the radio room.

I'd be happy to serve as a resource for any would be modders though, I'd love to see the odd blue or marlin. Heck, I would jump at an opportunity to do some trolling to offset the boredom of a long patrol and provide some protien for the men.

Well some interesting things but (there's always a 'but').... (btw I'm feeling a bit of a rant mood so please bear with me! and I have pre-ordered too!)

MP - We didn't get to see exactly how he was engaging the sub, but for this to really be any good we'll need to be able to control the depth of depth charges and have some means of detecting the subs other than just spotting a periscope. I guess all we'll get is an AI report since there were no stations on board the DDs that we were shown. I guess for the surface player, this is a little like an RTS - click over there, click to drop some DCs and wait. Anyone think that sounds interesting or deep? Personally, I'm not over-excited about that...

Survivors - We still haven't seen an example of survivors leaving a sinking ship - presumably they simply spawn :( However, being able to rescue survivors is a nice touch, but is there any limit and what happens to them? I have a bad feeling it'll be a dialog box appearing offering to rescue - click yes = they disappear and it is noted in log. No limits on how many until you dock, no concerns about extra food/oxygen usage when submerged etc. In fact, I wonder what will happen to enemy survivors - take as prisoner or no interaction at all?

Graphics - they are looking nice there is no doubt. I particularly like the crew on (or abandoning) ships although I know in a howling storm, they'll look ridiculous just wandering around the deck without a care.... I even thought the flags looked better in this video compared to the older ones.

Simulation - This is the most important part as far as I'm concerned - would have been happy with SH3 graphics if the simulation aspects were more detailed. Sadly there doesn't appear to be a great deal to mention there.

Setup, Aim, Shoot process looks largely the same as SH3 overall - I hope it is easier to turn off the aids this time round rather than requiring mods etc. Unfortunately nothing significantly new seems to have been added - no tidal action for example (although the Pacific isn't really affected by this), no moon phases for surface attacks, no mention of improved physics, AI not mentioned, less interior compartments modelled, the chart and plotting facilities look similar to basic SH3 ones again....

Seems like a fair bit of modding required yet again to incorporate what should be obvious things in a "simulation". The most irritating thing is they're not even that difficult to do - particularly with access to the source code. Instead though, Ubi are aiming for this mythical "casual gamer" that is desparate to buy an "arcade submarine" game - why would they, when an arcade *anything* game is more appealing and easily available?

Still, a week to go and perhaps we'll find Ubi has indeed thought of everything when adding all these new bells and whistles.....:rotfl:

"Modders, start your engines!"

r.

I would like more details on the single player "Cruise Mode" . I know the dev. seemed to say that this was targeted to the more casual gamer.

But - hey - we have some very detailed records for US sub cruises - far more than we do for U-boats. It might be cool to recreate an entire cruise for Flasher or Harder in excruciating detail.

I suspect these war patrols are are semi-scripted with very specific mission goals, to give players a chance to pop in on some of the major action. You could do it with SHIII single missions, actually, but the devs only included quick missions and the goal/trigger system itself was somewhat lacking. I imagine it will be more functional and varied in SHIV.

The difference from campaign is that I guess goals will be scripted rather than random. In campaign, I suppose there's no guarantee you would be assigned a 'rich' patrol area or make it to that or other big battle, since it is sort of random; war patrols would guarantee action.

In the video that Neal posted yesterday you can see that you stand on the bridge of a destroyer in adversial MP mode. So I would say that you can command an individual ship.

This is from Neal's SH4 review:

You control the escorts and the merchants. You can set escort waypoints, direct their course, and have them take up station using the top-down map or from a bridge station on the escort ships, reminiscent of Destroyer Command.
You can control fire from aft and side depth charge racks, individually.
Escort player gets sonar contacts in form of blue bearing lines.
Sometimes your contacts will be false contacts; dev team to balance.
DDs not assigned activity will process as AI (not as effective?) and prosecute a contact automatically.
I noticed that if a DD gets a contact, you could direct another DD to the area; if he gets the same contact, you have triangulated a good target area (where the two DD contact lines intersect). However, this does tie up two escorts, leaving fewer resources to search for the other two subs, and if the contact is false, then the sub players have an advantage.

After viewing this latest developer interview, I am fired up and it will be difficult to be patient for the mailman to deliver my pre-ordered copy of the game into my eager hands. I agree with some other posted comments that there will most likely need to be a patch or two to tweak issues in the game and also I look forward to some upcoming, no doubt outstanding, mods created by the gifted modding community to add additional punch to the game.

I am definately looking forward to spending all my upcoming spare time commanding a US submarine in the Pacific in the dynamic campaign.

At the bottom of my post you probably did not read, for I did say I found it on the Windows new media player and it was awsome. After finding it on WMP I replayed those scenes five times and never got really good resolution on that particular object.

That fish or whatever I had the small hand with finger pointing to was not a persons name in MP and at times there were two, then three of the said possible fish. Maybe it was not anything to do with the game for even with fairly good resolution in media player this thing was allways a blur because of how the Dev was moving the 'Ship Camera'.

Did you not read Neals post after mine ?

Well whatever it was will keep my curiosity up till I get ahold of the Sim and then I'm takeing along my fishing gear just in case. :yep:

But in all the previews i read and watch I only see them mentioning meters.....

It's been stated elsewhere that you get to choose.

Ahhh..yes, I've seen people who are "guessing" you can choose...Nothing confirmed from the powers that be..

Really? you did not read my post above yours and then read post #15 in that thread. I believe thats pretty offical.

This is pure speculation on my part, but the Adversarial Mode may be the hook into a DC2. It is a basic interface to control ship elements in the the game. You can issue commands to these ships, manage an attack. There is feedback to the escort commander by way of blue sonar bearing lines. This covers the basic inputs/outputs needed to interface two games. DC2 would be a filled out Adversarial mode plus extra DD stuff to do.
