Is it just me or does every screenshot/video for SH4 look dark and colorless? The water looks black. The ships have very muddled colors. The sky is not much better looking. The game just looks like a colorless world to me. I use two different computers so I know it is not the computers. Last time I looked the Pacific waters around HI are light blue. It is a bright and sunny place with lush green vegetation. Why does the harbor in the one video showing cranes moving etc look like the Exxon Valdez has spilled oil all over the place? Is it just me or do other see this as well:hmm:. To my eye, SH3 has more color and does not seem like horror movie is about to start when I look at it.

I think this will be a question of which Graphical settings and filters are applied in SH4.

I do not see this affecting what I see now. Even the ships shown on the SH4 website are all muddled and colorless. Color is color. Most of the colors I see are dark and dirty looking. The water looks almost black

I've noticed this as well. Some of the screens are really impressive, others not much different then SH3, in fact are a little gloomier as you mentioned.

Just have to wait and see.

Take into account though, Guys, that many of the screenshots and videos came from an early version of the game.

No worries.

Gamma adjustment is a slider option - you will have to play around with it until it suites you.

I kind of like the fact that the ships look dark and dingy. Makes them look more weathered and realistic.

Well, that is fine but it seems all are like that for the most part. Anyway, I just looked at the new video that was posted from the developers. Much different than the earlier versions. Water looks blue. Maybe just early developement. Like Reallydedpoat said gloomy. Seemed a little less gloomy on the new video.

The ship model detail looks fantastic from what I could see in the new video.....come on 3-20-07!!!!

I noticed it, too. It looks pretty bad. But frankly this is one aspect I'm not worried about. Prolly early shots or badly photoshopped or something, that's all.

Let's just wait and see. I'm sure things will look pretty on a sunny South Pacific day.

Thats what I'm hoping for. The Pacific is nice and sunny. Water is clear. Sure, the ships can rust buckets like they are supposed to be but the early screenshots everything was looking like a rust bucket.

I agree, AVG

I'm also hoping that this is just a function of screenshots not conveying the true colors in the sim. Yes, the deep Pacific waters should be blue; shallows mostly turquoise with some dark for reefs, and some turbulent areas are kind of a murky green, but mostly the blue and turquoise colors. On a sunny day, the sky should be that cerulean blue with big white pelagic cumulus clouds! But I wax poetic. The Ubi guys are from Romania, right? their own experience of oceans proabably "colors" their sense of what looks right. Maybe they should have done some "research" in Tahiti or Hawaii first.

I hope the environment looks awesome, but I also think that we can tweek some colors fairly painlessly if we don't like it. Ubi seems to always do such an excellent job, some fine-tuning can be a lot of work but also fun (in a sick sort of way).:hmm:

It could be that the "Hollywood effect" or however it is called was enabled. This effect makes things look like they were filmed during the war e.g. less color.

I believe it is called post-processing filters. It's kind of like how photoshop can make a picture look like it's from the old west.

And I'm willing to bet most computers couldn't run "in game" with these filters on, only for replay.

Anyone able to shed some more light on this? I don't know much about technology.

Hey WH,
I agree with you but I think folks get carried away with the graphic settings and think it has to be dark and soulful like the Atlantic. If you view the new video from Playful, your concerns as well as most I think will be lightened up (literally!)

The ocen is blue, the sky is clear, and the ships are a mix a fresh paint and old war horses. I think all will be very happy with this sim.

I've noticed the same thing too - the tones used for the sky and sea aren't very suggestive of a Pacific ambience.

As for the "movie-style" filter, I am not sure why this was implemented. My graphics card has a built-in option to produce a black and white movie-type output - if I wanted this feature I (and anyone else with a reasonably modern card) could enable it on my own. IMHO the resources that were used for this might have been better spent elsewhere...

Where is this Merchant FLeet Mod?

I only just now loaded the GWX mod as I usually ran my SH3 as default. I dusted it off a few weeks back to get back in the sinking mode again. Love these mods as they improve the game play and realism. :sunny:

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I sure hope it was just the Hollywood effects.

Speaking of this "hollywood effect"...they pretty much copied the main theme of Pearl Harbor. Isn't that like throwing the champagne bottle at the christening and it not breaking? Bad omen.

A bit off topic, but I found it kind of funny. There was a You Don't Know Jack (trivia game) question about this...

"The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor lasted about two hours. Pearl Harbor's attack on us lasted 3 hours and 3 minutes."

Back on topic, I'm sure it will be fine. I like ships that look dark and dingy. I'm sure repainting ships was less and less of a priority for the Japanese as the war went on.

You can customize the graphical and filter settings in SH4 to have the game looking pretty much any way you want it to look. It can look like an enhanced version of SH3, or you can add the "Hollywood WWII Movie" look and run all the filters.
