Well on April 30,1940 HMS Glorious departs Scapa Flow, escorted by destroyers HMS Acheron, Antelope, Beagle. They are to rendezvous with Ark Royal. HMS Ark Royal (F-VAdm Wells) is at sea with battleship HMS Valiant, cruiser HMS Berwick, and destroyers HMS Fearless, Hyperion, Fury, Fortune, Encounter, and Escort, preparing for the planned bombardment of Trondheim Leeds. If you would like to see a day by day action so you know what's going to happen or maybe even get there early to see it happen go to http://www.etherington.demon.co.uk/1940/may/1.htm

I dont know if you know the TF I am talking about but I started my career with Commander in Oct 39.
Right know this is patrol 7.
The TF I seen before but never got there as I had to reinstall the game, when setting up GWX1.2.

But I got them:rotfl: :rotfl:
If you approach from the east you will find the water just 11 to 13 m deep so the creep in. I found the task force to be a Sheffield at the tip the south end, then followed in line ahead by two troop transports, then just behind them two tribals with about 2000 m's seperating them.
Then there is another Troop Trans. but way back what didnt see was the third Tribal. I crept up to the center Tribals and picked the furthest first with a TII, then another TII about 15 secounds after the first.
Down they go.

Then the unseen Tribal comes from the north, all of the convoy is parked facing south and is stationary.
He cant find me as I am at 2 knots with 3 m's under me. Yuck what a place.

I got him though then went after the Sheffield and put two into her the Troop ships can wait till the cruiser is gone.

This is my best warship kill to date.

:hmm: that can't be true!

20 Apr 19401527 AF 83 Ship sunk! S.S. Sea Hydra (Troop Transport), 7414 tons
1818 AF 83 Ship sunk! HMNZS Gambia (Fiji class), 10725 tons

I was there 10 days before you! :smug:

Used the same picturesque route as you. Unfortunately this kaleu is a chicken, so we used very long shots, and missed some. Had quite some trouble with one of the small Tribals... at a longer distance, we saw - and heard - all ships suddenly started to explode? with all guns going off?? until we realised they were under air attack!

We went back to Trondheim for a filler-up and on our way south we did see, that they still were there, but no way we were going back in. Glad to see, you finished them off! :rotfl:

Great way to spend a Sunday

I feel ripped off. The cruiser reappeared when I was on my patrol I left it dead. So I can't figure that out. Any way I went back and sunk the the guy a secound time and still I do not get credit for it. I did get all the rest though. That got me the KC.

Also on the way back I got that J-K dd you see on partol it turns out that it was HMS Kelly. When I went into attack I thought I was going to miss here as she was at 30 knots so my approach was timed wrong when-
Bang. Guns.
The ships being attacked by Ju 87s. This allowed me to run up to her, but then the ac backed off and she heard me. To my relief they showed back and hit her once blowing of B turret. Then she was mine...:smug:

Here are a couple of pics of the destruction and location the time and date are:
"07 May 1940 0105AF 83Ship sunk! HMS Nubian (Tribal class), 1850 tons0105AF 83Ship sunk! HMS Bataan (Tribal class), 1850 tons0117AF 83Ship sunk! HMS Matabele (Tribal class), 1850 tons0219AF 83Ship sunk! S.S. Esso Boston (Troop Transport), 8957 tons"

I have to revise the sinking of the hole force though. When I targeted and hit the far side Tribal it happen just about the same time as the closest Tribal was hit.
Then when the third Tribal came up I got him I guess sonar is not that good 11 m's of water.
But then when I was talking him on some JU-88's attacked and sunk two troop ships and hit the Fiji. But I sunk it honest!!

Here's were it was and what it looked like:

I a similar TF on my campaign, but they were there to represent the British troops sent to Narvik (iirc) or even the British evacuation of Narvik. Don't recal when, but almost all of Norway was German, except Narvik and the town above it, Trondthingy perhaps ?

It consisted of

1 Fiji, 2 Tribals and 3 Troop Transports.

This was the secound time I seen that TF and this I had to have it. The capper to it all was getting HMS Kelly on the way back. What a surprise to be in a torp run when all of a gunfire starts for no apparant reason..

I guess most of allies are going home on warships now.

Hehe, this is fun. Poor brits! No wonder if they will give up Norway!

As mentioned we here on U-33 would not go back, but after a RMR we decided it probably would be more scaring to return to base ignoring the reporting  So we did go back in...

Here's U-33 log, April 22, 1940:

0330 Enter Trondheimleia fjord
1435 Dive to PD, 20 km from estimated target. Going 2kts.
1518 8 km to target. Periscopeview shows 2 large smoking columns south....
1530 6 km. First view of warship. Looks like a (new) Fiji cruiser.
1539 Eksplosions heard. Had a quick view. Luftwaffe is attacking the task force.
1610 4 km from cruiser.
1612 New air attack. Cruiser is hit. Not on fire. All three transporters burning. Can see 3 Tribals and one Fiji.
1719 900 meters from target. Open tubes, periscope up. Only to see Fiji is now under heavy attack. Severe hits. Big fire onboard.
1720 Fiji goes down in giant explosion. Damn you, Luftwaffe.
1725 Fires tube I with electric torp at stationary Tribal, 1940 meter. Tribal is in fight with LuftWaffe, so we switch to 6 kts and makes a 360 dgr turn, heading 200 dg S to our escape route.
1726 Turn completed. Back to 2 kts.
1727 Tribal is hit by first torpedo. Perfect bow shot. A second Tribal appears behind it. Heading our way, 36 kts.
1729 Hit Tribal speeds up, bow low in water. Second torpedo hits!
1731 Hit Tribal goes down. Second Tribal closing very fast!
1734 Tribal pass 50 m behind us. No chance for a shot. We go flank as she's on course 160 and dropping DC. Back to silent and change of course.
1736 Tribal turns away E. Making a long turn away from us.
1741 Tribal lies still in water. Listening.
1743 Speeds up and turns towards us. Seems to know now, where we are. Lining up for attack run. Last wills hastely written.
1744 Luftwaffe is back! Bless them! Stuka after Stuka dives in attack on the last Tribal. At least 6 planes in action.
1747 She's going down! Saw more than 10 direct hits. They really saved our butts, there!
1752 Surface the boat.
1755 It's a slaughterhouse. 6 wrecks lying burning and sunk. We return to plotted course. Going SW through Smöla fjord.
1816 Aircraft spotted! Luftwaffe back for inspection. Area cleared.
1855 Out of fjord. Depth 143 meter. U-33 will never enter shallow water again. Ever. We learned a lesson.

------------------

Yeah, that J&K... had one passing 2-300 meters behind my stern in AF84. 15m/s storm, rain, fog, night - never saw her with almost zero visibility , but we heard her loud and clear thundering by :o Tried to send a torp in good time, but with 36 kts she was way to fast... probably didn't even notice it.

We're now patrolling grid AF87...

That sound familar.
But I was in before the air attack once it got dark I crawled at 2 to 3 knots towards the Tribals in the center. When they were down, the third tribal caught me off guard when I was consintrating on the Ca.
I got the message contact appoarching from the rear. But like I say she must of had terrible sonar in the low water. So it made it easy to get her. Then I went back to the Ca and thats when the Air Attack happened.

The J K class love that one.
So we hit the same type of mission, the difference was the water when I seen the JK was nice and then the air attack again.

Where were you sent next and what patrol number was it, I think mine is 7.

I made the career in SH3 Commander so I could get the IXB. I started the war in Oct.

Started 1st November, 1939. Had some practice patrols "pre-war" in Type II, but started warpatrols in a VIIB.

4th patrol started 2nd April, saw us as high north as Narvik (1 passenger, 2 large cargo), went into Narvik for resupply. As we left, it was counted as 5th patrol, on which we encountered the TF in AF83. Got the Fiji and one troop transporter then. A quick dash to Trondheim for resupply and left on 6th patrol 22nd April for the above last visit in AF83. 1 Tribal noted as sink. 4th to 6th patrol was a total of 28 days...

It's now 25th May, 1940. 7th patrol. We are 100km north of Amsterdam, Karl would like us to patrol AN87. Should be a nice relaxing one... :88)
