View Full Version : Why and how does IX attract you?
Hi all.
I am playing SH3 with GWX 1.02.
I was "comanding" VIIC since october 1940, and now, in January 1942 I decided to switch to IXC. My first assigned patrol grid is DB94 (Florida), and I was wondering, what you guys do while traveling to there and back? It will be a long patrol, because I am sailing at 8-9kts, and I dont know what to do besides starring at a dot, that represents my sub. :) What are your experiances with boredom? :) For any tip, tnx in advance.

Read books. I recommend Werner's "Iron Coffins", Cremer's "U-boat Commander" or Gannon's "Operaton Drumbeat"
Reading and updating a paper log are about the only things you can do --beware of the shallow water off the US east Coast.
Anything to get away from the damned Airforce !
Plus I secretly smuggle to Brazil... it's the Navy wages, they don't even cover my swimming pool heating bill

Do some homework, read a good book, watch tv. If ur using a laptop like i do you can play SH3 anywhere u want.
Amount of torpedoes and strategy used with it. A IXB can get from decks awash to periscope depth at normal dive planes in 7 seconds I dont know what those VII captains are going on bitching about dive times. Convoy hunting, unlike with a VII where you can destroy some of the convoy with a IXB you can destroy most of it if not all. Actually right now I ran into a task force sank 3 light cruisers and 4 DD's accounting for all the ships in it and ive still got 11 torps left.

Well I use the alt tab button a bit,you can check your email etc. When i alt tab out i usually go to the command room, point at the Nav station where the maps are visible(pause game here),When ya come back in the maps should look normal if not alt tab again and come back in.1x is a trip,I have gone 3 or 4 days without seeing a thing, but when you do its 3x.I realise not all can play at 1x but to me it makes the game 4 times more enjoyable.

In transit to patrol area, i crank up the TC, and go watch the history channel, and look in on the game during commercials or if i hear a crewman yell something.
Or post here on subsim on the other computer
Other then that, i *think* i answered this question here:

The IX is attractive because it is a good practice boat getting ready for Fleet boat patrols out of Pearl Harbor. :D

Tehre just damm well all rounded boats with lots of fish and ammo and can take a hell of a beating plus theres some really cool skins. Ask Steed nicely for his one which is cool. Plus there great for sea fishing of:up:
IX Boats are big and pure bloody girl bait, what more do you want. :D
Hmm, interesting. I will have to get some books, I think. :) The truth, why I switched to IX is, because I finished the war at least 4 or 5 times in a VII, I did at least 300patrols with it, and I just need something different. I will stick with a IXC for a while, hope it works out. ;)

Lots of fish. Dive rate seems ok, andI just love the TWO stern fish. I can turn away from convoy/escort(s) shoot two then dive fast deep and hope.:smug:
By the way Capt. Martin where did you get the TWO deck guns. That would be a neat idea.

See my lawyer:gulp:
On my way to Florida, I encountered a convoy, but I didnt want to expend too much torpedos on it, so I only fired a salvo from the stern tubes toward the victory cargo ship, and she sank. So this is my first confirmed kill with IX boat in GWX. 10971 tons. Also, only one corvette tried to dc me, but I was able to evade it without any damage. :)

IX attracts me simply because I can do more damage in less time for obvious reasons. I've only made the long trip to the States once and have since kept myself closer to home so to avoid those boring moments of waiting. Though in GWX I haven't got past March of 41 yet, so things could change my decisions in the future.
FYI, if you use SH3 Commander, one of the many options you have is to assign yourself any patrol grid you like, so to avoid taking the long trips just to get that extra renown for doing your 24hr patrol.
No, I dont use SH3 Commander. I only use SH3 1.4b and GWX 1.02. I have just completed patroling my grid so now I am sailing south hopefuly to see and sink some tankers. ;)

Does the IXC ever get such cool surface firepower?

I like the type 9's because to me they are the business. They have a great wallop of firepower. Compared to a VIIC the crash dives are pathetic. But they have strong anti-air defenses and to make matters better. All those torpedoes make it easier to really rack up the tonnage. You have lots of fuel they are just better for the long haul gamer really.
True underwater they are very suceptible to asdic but with all the torpedoes they carry there is nothing to stop you blasting your attacker at periscope depth. Also they are not that nimble submerged but hey... its swings and roundabouts innit?
The VII's have the IX's dead to rights on a number of things, but then again the IX's have go the VII's dead to rights on a number of things. Its all about preference. Personally I don't think the argument that a IX requires more strategy to attack convoys then a VII is true really, yes you have to budget for a number of things but then again you have to do the same thing in a VII. Its just the extra agility of the VII makes things a bit easier.
IX's are my favourites.
I just found a convoy in the Gulf of Mexico, 8 medium tankers, 2 large freighters and 2 clemson escorts. Escorts are both gone, 1 torp each, so the convoy is unescorted. ;) I already sank two tankers, for the first one, I fired two torpedos at 5m depth, and for the second one only 1 torpedo at 5m depth. Both tankers exploded instantly, and I still have 14 torpedos left for 6 tankers and 2 large freighters. ;) Hopefully this will be 100k patrol, atm I am at 43k tons. ;)
EDIT:
I am playing at 84% (WO and External view assistance). I like to watch ships sinking... ;)
I have used all torpedos, and sank all tankers and one large freighter. 120k in total. :D This wouldn`t have been possible without IXC. ;) My first patrol went really well, I have just enough fuel to reach Lorient. :)
This wouldn`t have been possible without IXC. ;)
ohh yes it would
you can actually do that in a VII:arrgh!:

Hehe, I hadn`t done that in a VII. I meant, that I wouldnt be able to sink so much freighters and tankers without the torpedo loadout of IX boat.

Thats a mod of his. He ramped up the IXB to have a buttload of firepower. Its a mod meant more for fun then historical accuracy. Ive done similar shennanigans. Made a 50Kt speed boat out of an IID once and ran it through gibralter on the surface.. man that was a hoot.

Not without using a milkcow which totally skews your patrol logs, and although their implentation is a great workaround for their lack of native existance in the game - slighly unrealisitc since they totally refurbish your sub. (yeah.. can i join the realims police? errrr ... nevermind, i hate being like that)

so you're saying that i cant do a 100k patrol in a VII ?
and cant hunt in the carrib without a milk cow ?
I dont think that without the milk cow it`s possible to get to the Carribean and sink 100k there. You just dont have enough fuel. Or am I wrong?

you do have enough fuel to sail 300-800 kilometers down there (depending on the weather on the way down there) in a VIIB/C/C41
and you can get 100k if you're lucky enough to meet a tanker convoy:arrgh!:

A type 7 can get down there, it just can't get back home.
As for milkcow's, what makes them unrealistic is that milk cows in real life could only give you enough fuel to get home. THey didnt top off your tanks. They didnt totally fresh your torpedo load. They may have only transfered one or two torpedo's, not 14 or 22 torpedo's or whatever the case maybe. They also didnt repair your sub. THey may have provided a few spare parts, but its not like a shipyard crew popped out of the hatch and started to repair your sub to top condition.
But that isn't why I choose not to use them. My reason is even more vain.
It screws up my precious patrol logs! :rotfl:

Come to the dark side of the uber boat young padwan as many of us have:yep:
It *might* be possible to make it with a VIIC to the carribean if you got the larger batteries installed. Though it'd be tediuously boring the moment your batteries get recharged to 100% you go to periscope depth and get 45-90 nm for free (in terms of diesel fuel).
I've had to do this myself on occasion even with a IXC when I get Bfe patrol area down in the carribean or Florida, but along the way keep running into stray targets that are juicy enough to engage (like small unprotected convoys of 2-3 cargo or tankers) so that when I finish my patrol and run out of fish I've been really close to hoisting the sale to get those last 50 miles to Lorient:arrgh!:

With the Greeks having such a diverse disection of the afterlife (probably only rivalled by the Norse Myths) I've personally felt that Plato was commenting on that (their) war was over and it was their time to wreap what they sowed. An interesting topic and discussion I've had with many friends after reading that :know:
Usually when I set out for patrol I get to anxious to get at least to the patrol area and start either patrolling (if you actually get a decent grid to patrol) or hunting around profitable areas. Doing the Diesel->battery cycle from the start you could probably make it to anywhere (should try that next patrol )
