View Full Version : One way of circumventing the 1st patrol bug

You know, the one where zero tonnage or renown is awarded for your first patrol. I was affected by this during my 1st patrol in a Type IXB, even though I did not upgrade my boat nor enlisted new crew before I set off. 30,000 tons wasted! :damn:

So what I intend to do if I ever start a new career is to set sail, reach a point say about 100 miles away, and either abort the patrol (Return to Base option) or sail back to port.

You get zero renown, but you've wasted only a few game days, and you're set for your next patrol.

I'll pretend that this was a training/shakedown cruise, or that the boat encountered serious mechanical problems that forced me to abort the patrol.

What do you think?

Id say have fun with it and mod and enable the sabatage mod on SH3 commander to do something really heinous, and let the game surpise you when you find out what it did.

The first patrol is a good time to test how deep your boat can go... better then trusting the schematics and way better then finding out while half your sub is filled with water. :hmm:

I've found through testing that if you save just before docking, and you get 0 tonnage, simply reload the save and dock again. In every test I've done (admittedly only about 10 or so), the second time I have received tonnage.

Anyway, I actually play similar to you - I treat the first patrol as a shakedown/final training patrol prior to receiving promotion to ObLt and full control of the boat.

I think this works well for 1939 careers as you start just prior to WWII anyway, so it's really just "business as usual".

I concur. I have saved just prior to docking, then docked and received zero tonnage. I reloaded the save, docked again and I'm credited with the tonnage.

I always do a shortie, harbour-cruise patrol and dock. This improves my crew's efficiency and I can pick up a speciality for one of the crew. There's a longer article on enhancing U-boat efficiency on my webbie.
Good hunting, Kaleuns
