I was a quiet night at Le Penguin on Rue de Keromane, a short walk from the Lorient U-Boat pens. Thompsen, Jimbunkhoff, Grossboywillie, Krieghawk, Lt. Werner and I sat playing dominoes for a hundred Reichsmarks a game, drinking cognac and listening to J'atendre for the hundredth time.
Bernard walked in wearing a Hawaian shirt.
"What in the hell are you wearing?" Thompsen asked while flipping ashes into his glass.
"It's a Hawaiian shirt."
"No ****?"
"Yes, I'm going to Hawaii." Bernard took a seat and leaned on the table. Drinks and dominoes crashed on the floor.
"There's a war going on, you know," Steedhoff grumbled.
"Donitz is sending me and my elite crew to Hawaii." Bernard gathered the domino tiles into his cap.
"Your crew?" someone asked.
"Yes. Uncle Karl gave the command of U124 and an elite crew. Sorry Fellows, each one of you will lose people." Bernard pulled a list out of his pocket.
"How are getting to Hawaii?" Thompsen asked.
"Through the Panama Canal."
I was going to say, Stay outta the Canal, but kept my mouth shut.
"There's a war going on, you know," Steedhoff grumbled.
"This is my crew: from U-49, Bernhardt, Berner, and Bernaard. From U-123 Barnard, Bernadott. From U-74. Bernini, Bernholz . . ."
"And you all are heading to Hawaii via the Panama Canal?
"Good old Uncle Karl," Jimbunkhoff said.
"We're going to finish what the Japanese failed to accomplish."
"And the Americans will grab you and lock you up when you enter Gatun Lock." Werner said
"No, problem. The other night, we were playing Monopoly and Doenitz let me keep a Get out of Jail Free card." Bernard stood, put on his cap, scattering dominoes all over the room.
