I've just been glancing through Peter Padfield's War Beneath the Sea, and in his chapter America At War he has this note:
One CO returning from his failed attempt to penetrate the Gulf of Lingayen reported that his crew had been aboard under trying conditions since 8 December 'and an opportunity to rest and relax in the sunshine is rapidly becoming imperative for the maintenance of good health, morale and efficiency'. His was a fleet boat with air-conditioning, refrigerated food, separate messroom and washing facilities, and two-bunk cabins termed staterooms for officers and petty officers, all of which would have been the envy of the submariners of any other navy, indeed of their own S-boat crews.
The Lingayan Gulf attack started December 22, so they had been to sea a total of 14 days.
Of course sources such as Padfield and Blair also mention that most of the complaints were real, such as torpedo problems; and they cite poor preparation, especially as the American Submarine Service had never been to war and was still unsure what to look for in combat officers.
Still, I thought it was pretty funny.

After being in a type VII for the last couple of years, the U.S. fleet boats are going to seem like the ritz!
I guess the skipper who returned early could have grounds, if the boat wasn't well provisioned, mechanical failure or damage had caused problems.
If this wasn't the case, He would have been releaved of command.

Sometimes when I am on the way to the US coast in a IX boat I sometimes will stop my boat at certain little islands and give my boys a day or R&R to and from a successful hunt in SHIII. I set the crew watch for flak mode and let them have 8 hours.
Anybody else ever take your boat and give the crew a day of R&R to/from the combat theater?
I am thinking the Pacific in SH4 will offer some fine little islands for crew R&R rewards after a successful cruise?

The movie you two need to see is the 1966 classic The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming:

All the poor Soviet captain wanted was one close-up look at the United States. What he got was one of the funniest movies ever made.

"EMERGENCY... EMERGENCY... EVERYBODY TO GET FROM STREET!"
Still cracks me up!
I think it was Alan Arkin's first movie.

Not to be rude, especially to a brand-new member, but you resurrected a four-year-old thread just to make a joke? :sunny:
