I have just spent the last two nights trying to get back home after using all my torps, successfully sinking a medium merchant, and then evading the swarm of destroyers intent on paying me back. At last! I thought, I have DONE it; racked up a kill, me and the crew are on our way UP!.
Hmm, coming out of the game tonight, it caught my notice that the ship I sunk, is a neutral,
Does that mean I will not get ANY sort of renown for the kill, and that we will be sneered at, have backs turned on us, and laughed out of port? Oh, the disappointment, the shame, humiliation; what a dumbkopf I am. No wonder the crew stop talking and look away when I come by. I may as well end it all and start all over again on rowing boats - that's all I am good for:damn::nope:...

Heheehee. I once in my haste sank a whole convoy of neutral tankers. Needless, to say the German ambassador in Brazil got a good dressing down that night. Yup, they don't count toward renown. I think it negatively impacts it.

Yup, negative renown. Ergo - the BdU will take some of your hard earned points back.:yep:

Yep, it's worse than none; you will LOSE renown, and be publicly reprimanded. Your fellow Kaleuns, however, will console you with "Don't worry, it happens to the best of us."
The bad news is, they will probably continue with "You know, if you'd like to talk about it, I know a place..."

No need to start again Gracie
Uncle Karl wont hold it against you
Your crew have experience now and its a shame to can them because of 1 neutral
Wait till you sink a couple of your own
Then its time to hide

Personally, I am rather unpopular in Ireland.
By the way, why start your career over? You have a great story to tell. There's plenty of renown from your future glories to cover over an early mishap.
I think it adds depth to your Kapitan. Now she has remorse, which makes for better boozing and that romantic, haunted look just behind the eyes.
You can't tell me Thomsen from Das Boot isn't simply churning with inner turmoil, and he's a pretty interesting character . . .
Last night I was on my way home from my assigned grid (CG85), 6th patrol, type IXB boat. Somewhere west of portugal, I got contact report on hydropohone. I set an intercepting course, and went to persicope depth.
Then I spotted two ships, one armed trawler followed by a small merchant. Both ships had French flag. I set my torp to impact, 4 meter deep, target the small merchant and fire. Only took one torp to sink it. But after it sank, the mark on the map was green! It was a neutral ship!
What the heck? I checked the flag list and it said that French was neutral from June 26 1940. I checked my calender, whoa, it was June 26!! :damn: I was one day late, and it cost me some renown.:damn:

No biggie, all you need to do is sink an enemy ship of equal weight (at least) and your negative renown will be cancelled out by the positive aquired from the new kill.
This is actualy very common, and some gamers sink neutral ships on purpouse out of principle, like when you find "neutral" ships formed up inside enemy convoys, clearly aiding the enemy's war effort :stare: (the Americans in particular, are very pro-allies way before they technically enter the war)

well now its DOUBLE dearie me, 'cos I went off and done it. 'Take that you mis-begotten wonk-eyed wimp' I shouted, and sent my miserable failure of a kaleun to the back of the darkest cupboard. Gawn, kaput, finito.
However.......there is a bright side ( but am I cheating?). I started a new career, and, because I confess I find the Kiel canal a bit of a drag, I opted for 2nd flotilla and Willhelmshaven ( zat right??)
'Whaddya know!' I have got a shiny new boat which looks nicer, carries more torps, and is miles faster the IIA. Do I deserve it? NO, Can I keep it, or must I start at the lowliest (IIA) and work up?

If you're really hardcore serious about realism then you shouldn't go for VIIb boat while in 2nd Flotilla. They simply didn't have any. That's a tiny overlooked fact in SH3. But it's all about fun right? Not the hole-spotting. Treat yourself and go for VII type boat from the start. Why not?
I once attacked a small tanker and a munitions ship with deck gun. As I approached the two ships afire, I realised they were American and not Tommies. I stopped laughing at my colleagues.
Congrats on your new command. You will love the VII. You may want to read my suggestions for working up your crew in the survival section of my webbie. :D

Got sunk by an armed merchant on 6th mission (96% real) I was surfaced at night she was dark and could not ID her. I put a shot over her bow. Short story her gunner was better then mine. On my last two patrols I have come accross unlit ships. I sink them. I would rather lose reknown then a trained crew. If your not lit you dont fit.

I'm in no position to argue, but a lot of research was done before Beery did his 'Flotilla' mod and JSCones added it to SH3 Commander. What type of boat was outfitting the 2nd in '39?

Ah, they had VIICs but not Bs! Now somebody needs to look at Commander and see if that's done. Of course no Is in the game.
Thanks for that.:sunny:

No probs. I wish that was solved too. Although it's not essential to me.

I found my first convoy and fired my forward tubes(each one at a different ship)and went deep to reload. The only ship that sunk with one hit was a neutral. Was then so mad, I put 7 more torps into a C2 that was full of cork and empty barrels. All I can say is "Been there, did that"
