View Full Version : Weird Encounter (Unsinkable ships)

Ok, I had a real wierd encounter just now. Apr 1940 - I departed Kiel in my trusty VIIB, assigned patrol grid AN29, off Bergen in Norway. Along the way I got an intel msg about a task force - stationary! - spotted in AF83. So I make my all the way there and cautiously approached the TF which appeared to anchored off the coast.

The TF comprised a Fiji class CL, 3 Tribal class DDs, and 2 troop transports. Already I was imagining the glory & the tonnage - the accolades I would receive when I sailed back victorious and triumphant back into Kiel! Why Doenitz himself would pin the Iron Cross on me!

So anyways I sneak into the "fjord" (flattest I've ever seen, lol) on the surface at night. Water is very shallow - 15m depth under the keel!

As I approach the rear of the TF I find all of them stationary. I singled out a DD. My plan is to kill the 3 DDs, then the CL, then finally I can finish off the transports at my leisure. I sink the Tribal with an under keel shot, and swing around to bring my bow to bear on the next DD.

Conveniently at this time the Luftwaffe appears, and 2 pairs of Ju88s swoop in. They manage to sink one transport & damage the other, and whilst the RN ships are busy with them I bag the 2nd DD.

The 3rd DD soon falls victim, and I manoeuvre the boat & "park" myself, submerged, 500m off the starboard side of the CL, AOB 90 deg. Launch a torp, magnetic pistol, set to go off 1m under the keel. Nothing. The torp sails under & continues on its merry way.

OK, maybe a dud. The next one I launch is set to impact, about 3m deep. (Draft of the Fiji is 5.3m). Launch, torp runs, hits the ship & bounces off.

The next 2 are similar. I don't believe all 4 could be duds because this never happened to me before. Frustrated I sail off & target the damaged transport. I swing my rear around & launch a mag shot under the keel of the transport. Same result.

I suspect somethin buggy.

I noticed that the red line indicating time of impact never appeared on the stop watch when the torps were launched at the Fiji and the troop transport. However atacking the DDs the red line appeared as normal.

Did you get any messages to switch to Impact pistol only from BDU?

He said the red line indicating the estimated time of torpedo impact wasn't there  :p :rotfl:

I've noticed the same problem several times. Every time when that red line in the chronometer hasn't appeared the torpedo was a dud, no explosion whatsoever.

Did you reset the chronometer after firing the torpedoes it could somehow be related to the duds.

I dont think that will make a diffrence but if it does well easy fix:up:

The chronometer bears no relationship to the reliability of the eels :nope:

did any of them explode at all? i've found that magnetic in extremely shallow water is wonky :stare:

I always use contacts on merchants and battleships. Better to be sure, there's so much hastle with magnetics.

I suspect a bug, perhaps a stock one. I seem to recall that some players had similar problems attacking ships in harbours in vanilla SH3.

I sank the 3 Tribals using under keel shots - they break into 2 very well! :D  ;)

I used a combination of impact & under keel (ie mag) shots - in all instances where the torps didn't do any damage, the red line on the stop watch didn't appear.

Duds I've seen (premature explosions) and hits when the angle of impact is too acute, so the torp bounces off the hull.

But I can't explain how impacts at 90 deg AOB wouldn't work - I mean these are not early was Mk 14s of the USN, which had this very problem.

I expended a total of 11 torps for only 3 DDs.

I was so disgusted with it I RTB'd with 3 more torps. Ah well, I'll just pretend that it was a faulty batch of torps, and that I saved these 3 for inspection by the technical fellas. :D

Are you sure there were no subnets? These are the problem while attacking in the harbours. Once i sent 4 torps into a Fiji but all detonations seemed pramature. Then i cheated and went to external view. I found subnets just before the ship and on torp's trajectory. Didn't finish it off though. I withdrew and went hunting somewhere else. I'm not gonna cheat myself now, am i?

I'm not sure about the stopwatch - I've had lots of cases where the stopwatch didn't show the red line, even though the time to target was shown on the TDC map (using manual targeting). I'd be 500m out, LOS, 30 seconds and boom! But no red line.

No subnets - I know 'cos I looked ;) and I crept around submerged all over the bay without coming across one.
It wasn't a harbour or port, just some part of the Norwegian campaign. It was reported as a Task Force.

Ive noticed with my version of GWX(1.02) theres been no red line but have still had hits and that ole familiar glugging noise.
