Does destroying the cargo on the decks of a merchant contribute towards tis destruction?

I suspects that exploding crates, etc indicate that the ship is seriously damaged, but I wonder if we could hasten the destruction just that twee little bit...

assumably as the exlosion is in contact with the ship model
and getting hit by debris hurts your sub.

Part of the process in its demise, so yes I would agree with this.

Consider RDP the experience of being sunk by a crashing aircraft
this has happened to me many times the aircraft is debris
but the damage model still percieves it if I get sunk.

From what i can figure out Destroying Crates/lifeboats/masts and lights etc contributes to makeing it go glug glug:up: which is a good noise to hear.
