I know how you feel,..but you will buy it sooner or later, so go for it now! ;)
LOL I just asked in the "Expected Ship date from UBI" thread. Didn't see this one.
I won't give up $50 for it either. I'll wait till is drops to a more respectful price and just read about how it is for now. ;)

50 bucks is the average price for just about any new PC game, and even most titles that have sat on the shelves for a few months. It's kinda like an industry standard. Games usually dont start dropping to the 30 dollar range tell theyve been out for a couple years.
If your waiting for the price to drop, your gonna have a long wait.

Having looked at the game's specs I may have to wait to. My aging computer probably needs to wait until next year before I can repalce it.

I am sorry, but I've had hours and days of fun with SH3. I want the line to continue. I will continue to prod them to do better, but I understand the greed that diverts them. Go ahead and get it now. I know it will cost half as much in 6 months, but you will lose half a year of play. Of course, I've nothing better to do, and am obessed with it, but that should not deter you from getting it now. Just think of the fun you can have complaining about it.

I say the more money SH4 brings in the better chance future development will improve with manpower, manhours and development time. If everybody waited until prices came down, the future in gaming would be much worse off. So don't be stingy unless you have to, is my opinion.

My tab for SH4 is going to be 61.77, USD... Game, Freight, and Washington Socialist State Sales Tax. Once... just once... THIS time, *I* am going to be in the Front Row...now back there on the Hind Tit ! I don't have time for too many more War Patrols....

That's what I'm talk'n about.......While watching one of the trailers once I was impressed with the number of people employed. The room was crammed packed with folks in cubicles......Payroll w/benefits must 50 to 60K per month....and that may be conservative.......Not to mention facility and equipment r&m, recurring rents, taxes, and the many other variable expenses which pinch your margin.....
So, fifty to sixty dollars USD is about average.
I know that may be a tuff nut-to-crack for some of you younger dudes on limited budgets....but....you might have to consider putting off that purchase of that I-POD you been eyeball'n at the mall.....J/K...I'm sure you get the point none the less.

Yes.... I have mixed feelings for fellows like 'immortal'. If he really is that much in need of cash, we should respect his position, and grant him some 'peace', as he gets his finances in order. On the other hand, to even HAVE one of these machines, and Internet... how can a ' Saw-Buck' or a 'Double Saw-Buck' be that important?
Yet... each walks their own path, for sure...
I am not taking beans off the table 'blowing' $62... Would I? Don't tempt me...I'm overweight anyway...

When you consider that you can pay $29.99 for a DVD movie which you watch once and then put on a shelf to gather dust $50 does not seem a lot to pay for a title like SH4 which has almost unlimited playability.
In the UK where I live the original Silent Hunter was released over ten years ago at £50 now we have SH4 available from online stores at £24.99!... half the price of the original game!
When you consider that ten years have elapsed and all the goodies you get, even the deluxe version seems a bargain, especially when our console owning bretheren are paying twice as much as we are for inferior games relying on boring franchises and eye candy over gameplay and longevity.
I am very happy to give my money to Ubisoft they have supported us and we should support them. We are a niche market (subsims) inside another niche market (sims) we should be very greatful that Ubisoft consider us worthy of investment at all, and especially when they deliver us as a high quality product as SH4. Our continued support will hopefully encourage them to go on and develop a Destroyer command 2 and SH5.

Going to a movie with the wife runs about $25 after drinks and popcorn. Taking her out to dinner first costs a whole lot more.
Staying at home playing sh4 will actually be saving me money.

I'm not sure if understood, I was saying it's a bit silly to complain about the price of the game, it's not like paying an extra $10-$20 will break the bank. If you're saying I should respect his postion, it's just that his attitude suggested that he thought the game was a ripoff, and wouldn't pay $50 for a game despite having enough to afford a computer that can run it.

May I ask.....if you don't want to pay $50, what price WOULD you pay?
I think $50.00 is more than fair. I was ready to pay twice that upon release. I agree with the general feel about this. You need a $2,000 - $5,000 system to run it, but 50 bucks is a problem?
Thats like the Lambourgini diablo owner with full insurance refusing to pay 3.00 a gallon for the gas to drive it... Nice to look at, but not much enjoyment.
Oh well.. give it 2 years and you will be able to get it for 9.95 in the bulk barrel. In the mean time you can always admire the SHIV wallpaper on your screen.

What the hell did people expect?
A functioning and complete game as it was described by the manufacturer. If that is supplied to me, I am pleasant to pay more than 50$ for it, but if not, then even 10$ are not worth for me. It cannot simply concern that today it is the task of the customers and modders to finish a game and make it playable it in such a way like it was the task of the manufacturer. If this is the trend, then I am no longer willing to support this with purchasing such a product.

Of course it will be functional, they always are.
The biggest issue is complete. How complete? You mean error free? As far as PC gaming is concerned, that is something that doesn't happen. It is the nature of the beast.
Plus you got millions of people using computers that know relatively nothing about them and on top of that you have a wide variety of computers of which many can't handle the load that they want to use it for. And on top of that you have millions of computers that get screwed up every day by the people that use them.
OK, OK, but what about the rest of us? Well, I think there's still a ways to go b4 we get to a point in history where PC games are consistently troublefree. So for now, unless you want gaming companies to spend twice the amount of money and time to develop and charge us twice the normal amount to purchase games, then you're going to have to deal with what you got, more or less.

This is a built-in infinite complaint department. Define "complete game". What's next? SH IV didn't come with a salt water sprayer and fan to mount by your PC so you can feel the wind and salt spray on your face when you're on deck? How about the smell of burnt cordite when the deck gun fires? The sim is really not "complete" without those things, is it? My point is this: it is physically impossible for a sim to completely and unstintingly simulate the pacific submarine war to everyone's complete satisfaction with today's technology. This isn't the 'holodeck' on Star Trek. It's a computer sim. It has limitations. Everything cannot/will not be included. That is where modders step in. Bravo for them. It is a labor of love for them, I think, a hobby, to add to these sims. At least it has been for me.
As has been pointed out, you are getting a lot of work, expertise, expense, etc... from Ubi to provide a sim such as SH IV for 50 bucks US, or thereabouts. We subsimmers are a very small niche market. If the Ubis of the world don't see some ability to turn a profit by producing sub sims, there just won't be any more sub sims. It's just that simple. 15 years from now, you'll be trying to find a computer you can still play SH IV on. Keep whining, don't support these companies, (which actually do listen to our ideas and constructive criticism) and see what the natural consequences are. (read: No more sub sims.) Just my $.02

...and no, I'm not boasting about having that kind of money to spend on eating-out, at least not deliberately; it was my sister's birthday, so it was worth every penny.

Indeed. Let's, for a moment, count the game studios that have come !and gone! because people didn't buy enough of their games:
- Jane's Combat Simulations (that gave us 'Fleet Command', '688i', and a bucket of great flight sims)
- Microprose (Microprose! "Silent Service II" is a genre CLASSIC! And, again, buckets of flight sims. Who can forget the awesome news of the layoff of the entire Falcon 4.0 staff right around Christmas, as another patch was supposedly about to come out?)
- Rowan Software. Hello, "Mig Alley" and "Battle of Britain"! And....goodbye, too!
- Dynamix ("Aces of the Pacific", and another great subsim classic - "Aces of the Deep", etc)
- DiD ("EF2000", "Total Air War", etc.)
- Heck, even Sonalysts ("Dangerous Waters", "Sub Command") are largely allocating resources to other, 'more profitable' ventures.
You can go on and on and on. Simulations are really QUITE a niche market. A company has to deliver damn near perfectly, and consistently (and be based in a lower-cost-of-living foreign country  ) to even break even anymore (see: the IL2 series, the Flanker series, etc).
For a 'mainstream' product (say, anything in the 'Battlefield', 'Quake', or 'Unreal' series), sure, I'm all for "voting with your wallet" and not buying a title if it doesn't perfectly meet every expectation you have.
For sims? Ummm...no. QUITE a bit more lenient, there. Holding on to your principles and driving every one of the companies out of business is hardly a good long-term solution.

Games were only about 10 bucks cheaper 8 to 10 years ago. So a 1 dollar increase over 10 years isn't that much. Does that even cover cost of living increases?

That's a pretty good list XanderF made of all the games in my library. Good point too ...
Just proves us submarine simmers/PT Boat/Naval Sims/Pirate Boat sims/aircraft sims type
of people are rare and extremly smarter than the other boobs, who have to have the latest
FPS/witchcraft/Kung Fu games.
We sub/naval simmers have smarts, inteligence, patience, a real inner understanding of
what is fun. It's all in the hunt, that's what every policeman will tell you ... The fun is all in the hunt.
That feeling will never go away in man ...

as a gamer,,an addicted gamer with gaming as a main hobby,( beside my Suzuki M109-R:D ) has give me the opportunity to be ( doing for free), as I wrote before, doing internal beta testing for H&D 2, testing patch for I-War, (space simulator) sending test results direct to programmer over in England over e - mail, testing Throne of Darkness, ( I'm getting to the point :D ).
$50 is a sum that pay all this that make a game come out; work, dedication, artists putting in over-time that would any normal human "close-the-store", and above all in a shrinking sim - market, "dangerously" fast, one should really be happy for a success like SH3 making Ubisoft making SH4 come true. Does anyone think IF SH3 would have been a complete failure that we would have a SH4 in GOLD status today??
Also, look at consoles games price tag that never really go any cheaper until after about a "decade".
All due respect,,if $50 is costly for you, wait until price hit the bargain bin and then buy.
The sim market is so small today that soon we need a microscope to see it. I'm so lucky that I sit on most of these sims, ( read the word above: addicted) and can play them over and over.
