Hi,
I experienced something strange with my sub, and would like to know if "it can happen" og is really unusual.
I'm in my 6th patrol on a type VIIB, date is 10 of april 40. I dived after an air attack and got no damage from it. I decided to cruise undersea during one hour, at 40 meter depth. Suddendly, my chief is shouting about damaged compartments, the only crew in the diesel compartment is dead, the sub is going down and water is flooding everywhere. Hopefully the sub lies at the bottom of the sea which is only 75 meters, so I have time to repair without worrying about the pressure. Once the flood is under control, I surface (with no engines since the batteries are destroyed), and sub status is :
Port diesel engine, both batteries, hydrophones, attack and obs periscope, radio antenna destroyed. one dead crew.
I lost a lot of fuel too.
I don't understand what happened: No planes in the area, no ship. Could something have exploded in the sub? of could have I met a mine ? I'm about 70 kilometers from english coast in the northern sea, and the external view confirms I'm the only one in this area,
Any ideas?

Ok, I saw in another thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=106683)that someone experienced the same thing, and that the english coast was carpeted with mines. Well, I think I have enough fuel to get back to Germany, but Kiel is out of range. I hope I can get some help in some german harbour (never needed it before:)
Is there any way to detect mines?
nope
just gotta know where they are

I believe you have just exercised the primary means of detection . . .

This happened to me the other day. I was going after a cargo ship its july 1940. I had my deck Gun crew ready. I sank it and then my CE was shouting "we're taking damage", i looked at the subs compartments and noticed every one in my diesil room dead and one guy in my aft wardroom. Then i looked on the map and didnt see any warships. All of a sudden it said i was dead. Uboat Destroyed?????? I dont know why, i was in the open ocean, so a mine would be out of the question, and a plane wouldnt have the range. So i dont know why, it ended a really good career.

Ok in SH3 Commander there is the following optiopn do you have it ticked damage model sabotage and theres another one cant remmeber what it is and seeing as im playing at the moment i cant open it up that may be the cause of your phantom damage:up:
It had to be Bernard. Of late he's been in the Head quite often and is prone to lighting his farts. Kills the smell but there's always a Big BADDA BOOOM. :yep:

Poor bernard he always gets the blame but it probably is him.....
I hate to torpedo an otherwise good joke, but those seagulls in "Finding Nemo" are saying "mate" with a strong aussie accent, not "mine". You probably need aussie ears to hear it....sounds more like "mite" than "mate".
The joke in "Nemo" is that if you are in an Australian crowd, at least in an "ocker" (rougher kind of) crowd, the word "mate" will be uttered so frequently that it would be about the only word that would stand out of the collective babble....also, an entire conversation could be had with the single word "mate" spoken with different inflections, just as in parts of the USA you could use "dude".
Pearls of aussie wisdom, kaluens.....:know:

Im using SH3 Commander but i dont have the sabatoge/malfuntion option on. And i was in the heat of the battle against a cargo ship so i was at normal playing time. There were no warships around and the cargo ship didnt have guns. But i remembered wat happened now. I had a full crew in the Diesel engine room but i had four guys in the Electric engine room and then i had a medic in the back wardroom. The guys in the Diesel room died and the medic in the wardroom also died, then within seconds the game said my uboat was destroyed.

That self same thing happened to me a few days ago and it said i collided with another ship. Some one suggested a partiall submerged wreck which could also be the same for urself mate if thats any help.

Airplanes will drop depth charges based on guesses of your position provided by surface craft, even if you are submerged. I've had it happen in harbors (well, harbor, actually - Port Said, in my unsuccessful attempt to find the Averof.)
Maybe you got unlucky and they managed to hit you from an estimated position.

Not the first time a Plane has blew me out the water with a direct hit while ive been submerged:down:

Could be, but very unlikely since I sailed about one hour at -40 meters, and changed course as soon as I was around -15. The explosion occured when I went to periscope depth to check the sky before surface.
I guess mines are probably only in shallow waters, so does anyone know if there is a "safe depth" over which mines can't be layed?

Can't speak of a safe depth but I do know the only definite way of avoiding them is to stay surfaced :arrgh!:

In my early IIA days I was around 60 meters depth
I knew there where mines and received damage
I looked external. I hit the chain where the mine was attached to
so it seems to me that the chains can do damage too

Basically anything can damage your boat in SH3 including the seafloor:yep:

You mean you could actually SEE the mine and the chain via external view? I'm asking because when my sub took damage I checked via the ext. view to understand what happened, but nothing was in sight underwater.

What version of the game are you playing ? :hmm:
If it's vanilla then you can see for one hell of a distance....but if it's TGW or GWX you need to tweak the water clarity/density with SH3 CMdr up to 20 :arrgh!:

GWX.

Then use SH3 Cmdr to change the water to 20 (18 is default setting) :arrgh!:

this is important
if you HIT the mine and goes BOOM
the mine dissapears and you cant see anything underwater
you m8 still see the white splash on the surface.
also if you know there are mines in the area..just pop up the Observation scope a bit so you can see in front of you (submerged)
I hit a mine outside of Wilemshaven on my first patrol.
Talk about baptism of fire, someone could have warned me! :D

Nice advice. Are late war equipements (sonar) any useful in mine detection? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but it's my first campaign and I'm in april 40 ....

Nope, Sonar doesnt detect mines,
sonar has been made to calculate the distance of the Sub toward the Ship, its made if you play high realism to set the torpedo.
It easier to know where mines have been placed to avoid damages.
*English nort/east coast: lots of mines
*Enlgish channel: Mines at the north and south entrance and a couple of fields in the middle
*Enemy Harbour entrances are always Mined and Subnets
*Friendly harbours have also a couple of mines at the entrance
and there are some more but I cannot think of any

Well heres a surprise i was cruising about 250 km of the nw of scotland in open seas i was in map mode(f5) then skipped to external view to admire my U-baoats paint job that i had just put on and was taking some piccys.
Then all of a sudden all my forward crew were dead all my aft crew were dead someof my Watch crew were injured no mines in sight or ships or planes or sub nets nada suddenly lost 70% of my crew and my hull went from 100% to 67%.
Was very weird was still playing so i stopped my boat and spent 20 minutes external to see if there was anything near or far away that could have done it and hit the sonar room and nada near me either seems like a glitch to me.....
