View Full Version : Help me in choosing my new sub

Hello,
I have enough renown to change my sub so I was thinking about leaving my trusty U-101 (VIIB) and switching to either VIIC or an IX, but I don't know which one. Sure, I'd like the better range of the IX and I like its size, but I'm worried about its speed, which is lower.
Except its better range, is IX in any other way superior to a VIIC? Is there any commander of an IX who can convince me that bigger is better? ;)
Bigger is better go for it, IX all the way.

Jeez...here we go, another war between those who swear the life of their children by VIICs and those who want to mate with their IXBs... :rotfl:
I say go with the VIIC, it's my fave by far. But now I'll sit back and watch the spitballs that will be thrown between the two camps. Oh, well, at least it passes the time until SH4 arrives, haha. :yep:

IXC or IXC/40:yep: Fantastic boats, loads of fuel, far too many torpedoes and very good diving times. When I get one of them I stick with it till the bitter end:up:

Personal preferences aside, my question to you is, do you prefer short to medium range patrols, or long range patrols? ( a long range patrol can be as short as 60 days or as long as 120 days)

Ive plaid SH3 on and off since it was released i would deffo go with the IX there very sweet boats and can be made to do the job just nice and as one other person said the have a really silly amount of fish which ultimatly is what ur looking for so and yes big is better in this case(there is a joke in here but i dont want banned in my first day back on the forum after a long hiatus)

If you are playing GWX the IX is faster. I tend to stay with the IX untill the end of 1943, then switch back to the VII as you then have a chance of making it through the war!!
It just depends on what you want to do and where you want to go!

I play W@W and have a IXC (which i've just had scuttled after copping about 95% damage in the carib..... when im not playin that tho i stick with my VIIB! i personally find the VIIB much more to my taste for just relaxin around with SH3, its much much shorter patrols which suits and you can always go into ports in it if you dare,, which can't really be done with a IX.

One more thing to consider is the goofy weather model in the game. The type IX´s longer staying power alows you to enjoy more spans of calm weather.

Easy now IB. We have limits. Besides, my wife already thinks I've run off with a IXboat.... and she right, but doesn't know it yet.

I disagree on both counts! :88)

well, its not as easy to go harbour-hunting in a type IX when you're being chased by a trawler or several, anyway

Theres a reason why i pack electric fish in my tubes :arrgh!: Harbor raiding to me, is something thats is carefully planned and executed. I don't pull up to just any ole harbor and start shooting torpedo's willy nilly. :know:

Type IX is my vote. Call me crazy, but I hate convoy attacks. You usually get sent to places full of single mechants with a Type IX, plus I like being out at sea.
I'm still in my 6th patrol. It's my first patrol on a type IXB, I haven't reached the assigned grid (CG85), just reach west of Ireland now. And so far, I have 3 different air patrols straffed their machine guns to my boat ... causing a minor damage on my flak gun... because the boat takes some time to dive. :nope:
Good thing is, it has better range then type VII and carry more torps, 21 IIRC:D

Take the IX.
It's good training for when SH4 comes and you can finally get into a decent Fleet boat.

I like long patrols so I think I'll go for IX. Out of curiosity, I've seen VIIC and IX fan clubs here, but nothing about XII. This is ultimate boat I'm waiting for. Has anyone had pleasant experiences with that one? :)
Thanks to all of you.

The VII is OK but to show the other Kaleuns what a large set of nuts you have and are not affaid to show them....take the IX:up:

For every job, a perfect tool.
In other words, if you play SHIII to be part of the wolf pack, hunt in the North Atlantic, and specialize in the destruction of convoys, I would recommend the VII series.
If you like longer patrols to far off lands, or you just like the strategic flexibility having a lot more fuel and torpedoes buys you, then go for the IX series.
Now, the IX folks will tell you it is a fine choice for harbor raids and hunting convoys, and the VII folks will tell you that by mixing lemon juice and milk with their diesel fuel they can raid Galveston. OK, but that doesn't make those boats the optimum choices for those situations.
Bottom line - I would match your choice of boat to two things:
1) your preferred hunting tactics
2) your preferred hunting grounds
In the end your success will be limited more by your abilities as a skipper than by the boat.

Excellent advice! Of course my preferred tactic is to stay at my pier and hope no one notices, then claim all the glory later.
Guess I should stick to a type II.

Sick to your old boat. My sweet VIIb has been with me for so long i wouldn't think of cheating on her with any other. If we're going down, it'll be together.

21 torpedoes , fast in surface, long range or small range at more speed, not very different as VII in dive times .

Type IX all the way.
More fuel more weapons.
"Be more aggresive"...
Hard to be if your driving a type VII and spend most of your time getting to and from your patrol area or tied up at the dock reloading:rotfl:

Well, seeing as there are no wolfpacks in the game, the case for the VII and all that convoy attacking stuff falls a little short.
The "lone wolf" approach in a IX type sub is better modeled in the game.
