So have you given any thought to when you want to start a career or what your first boat will be?
I have an urge to begin my first career in an "S" Boat operating out of the Philippines in Dec 1941. Lingayen Gulf is calling!

"S" boats hold no appeal for me - old, slow, low number of tubes, no fun toys.
Nahhh.
I'll take a Gato and start when the campaign was heating up.

I'm afraid I'll just pick whatever is default. I knew a lot more and was more interested in the Atlantic war than the Pacific to be honest.

I was kind of hoping for my old Balao class USS Segundo (SS398), maybe I could even find my old rack and catch a few winks............

Where in the **** have you been?! Welcome back!
Oh, I`ll take whatever boat I can get, dont know much about US subs or the Pacific campaign, so this will be history lessons and fun all in one.

I guess I'll start right after Pearl Harbor with a S-class. But before I go on patrol I will get rid of that renown system.:D

My first 'command' will be: "All ahead slow"
My second command will be: "Somebody get me a sandwich and some coffee, we got a long patrol ahead of us." :yep:
As for choice of command, I'd take a S-Class....for training purposes.
S-class as it's the nearest thing we get to a Royal Navy Sub - as a few s-class were loaned to the Royal Navy
Kaleun
I'll be in the port tavern waiting for the last sub available :dead:

I will take the best sub class available in December 1941 that sails out of Pearl Harbor. I want to eventually work my way up to command a Balao class submarine. I will also make sure 'realistic torpedoes' is enabled and then experience the frustration over the torpedo problems (running too deep, defective magnetic & contact exploders) that the original US submarine skippers encountered for the first 18 months of the war. That humble and frustating time will make me appreciate the later parts of the campaign (late 1943 to end of war) when the torpedo problems were fixed!

Not a good idea. The S-boats had a fairly short range. If you're operating out of Cavite you'll likely have a 'Sugar boat', but out of Pearl you'll probably start with a Perch or Tambor. Or maybe even a Gato if your lucky.
I'm sure they'll do the same for SH4 as they did for SH3, and you'll get to choose which subron you're with, and get the boat that way.

Hey Steve, I didn't mean to start from Pearl Harbor I just wanted to say that I'll start right after the attack of Pearl Harbor. But you're right: To get a S-class I would have to start from Cavite.
First of all I'm gonna open a beer and smoke. Then... the Night is mine! Only me and SH4...

I'll probably try a Sugar Boat out of the PI to start off with. It just seems to bring back original SH memories to me, and besides, I always enjoyed the "They Were Expendable" movie with John Wayne. :D
Will be interesting to see if the battles on Bataan, Corregidor, etc, are in-game. I hope so since the story of Bataan's Battling Bastards is quite the story, and like so many other events, seems to be forgotten or unknown by many.
I, for one, am hoping to disrupt a Japanese landing force or two :|\\

I'll probably start with the first sub I see on career mode, I'm not really well informed on the pacific submarine war so I'll have a lot of fun just finding out how things work down there.
I'm really excited about these new types of mision and more active campaign rather than simply patrolling particular squares and hoping a convoy pops up in strike range.

I will start from the default too. Like in SH3 u get the IIA or IID dug out canoes. With SHIV no doubt if you start from the begining when US went to war your get the dug out canoe - american version. S-Class.
But i will be overjoyed when i finally get my hands on a Gato. :yep:
Pick the best sub to begin, see everything, get to know were is the butons and levers.
Shout "AAALLLLLAAAARRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMM", to see how the crew and the sub performs and see all the faces of my crew stering at me and some one just doing the "he's crazy or something" gesture...
I will start with an S class, I like to work my way up to the badass subs.
Same.. I always like to start as a underdog and look forward to the better things to come
Il have great fun taking the S class out for a few patrols.... might even keep it for the first few years of the war :smug:

I'll take a S-class (S-38) in the Philippines. The first place I'm heading is Lingayen Gulf. There should be a nice bunch of fat Japanese troopships disembarking troops for the invavasion of Luzon, just waiting to be sunk.

Something out of the NYC area. I want to see Manhattan.
Other than that, an S-Class.
I for sure will start with a Perch Class submarine, USS Pompano (SS181) if it is available. Why? Well...when we started developing Pacific Aces for Sh2 it kicked off as a mod to drive the perch class subs. Only those and the tambors were supported in SH2 originally, but Tambor had 6 forward and 4 rear torpedo tubes and we could not add them back them -later Sergburto came aboard and did it- so I researched a lot about Perch class subs and fell inlove with them. Nearly as bad as a S-class sub, almost equally heroic, but probably way more anonymous to everyone. So, as a respectful hommage to those submarines, I will start with one of them. And Pompano, which was lost in campaign, seems the right choice.
Looking forward a lot to go again on patrol in the big Pacific on the bridge of a Perch sub!

As long as it has Fish and can go to see i would use a bath tub pacific here i come:up:
I've been given this some thought. I want to play with some S class boats, but my first carrer I would like to start with the Permit SS-178. I remember being down the pier from the nuclear one, so that will give some attachment. I hope to move to the Silversides SS-236 or Drum SS-228 as early as possible though.
One I will definately shy away from is the Scorpion SS-278. I'm not supperstitious, but I shant tempt fate:arrgh!:
you could go hunting German warships in the Atlantic... apparantly there are still german and allied vessles up in the atlantic so it might make for a good trip....... in a fleet sub of course.. dont want to be running out of fuel and food half way in my S class ;)

i consider all the other pre-44 US subs under dogs of the S and V boats as the S had torpedos that acctuely work and could go in shalower water and had a smaller sillowet, and the V's as thay could do other stuff as wall as normal patroles (in therey any way) and had BIG cruser deckguns (other subs got them in late 44) but thats just me.:|\\

Although i have played sh3 i will do the tutorial missions in what ever sub they give me (hopefully an S-class). Then i will want to play two campains. First an S-class bases at Cavite and follow that carrer to (hopefully) Australia, my county of birth:rock: , then were ever they send me. Most of my patrols will be around the islands of SE Asia, alot of action. Secondly i want to be based at Midway (I love Midway:sunny: ) and operating around the Japanese home islands.

I dont think i would take the Scorpion as well i am a ex submariner and a British one at that and even after all this time etc etc it's still well known thru the sub community:down:
I'll take either a "P" or a Salmon class boat, but if the TDC is found onboard the S class on the Phillipines, i'll take one of those S boats.

S-boats shouldn't have a TDC; everything I've read says they didn't have one in real life.
Now that I've read about the number of early fleet boats (Pearch, Salmon) in Cavite versus the tiny number of S-boats, I might reconsider and take a Salmon instead.
You guys are forgetting the Plunger! First US submarine to be depth charged. (It's the Plunger pt. 1)

Hey Steve, I didn't mean to start from Pearl Harbor.
I had quite an amusing vision in my head then...
"MAN THAT BLOODY AA GUN!!!!!!"
But me... I'll be back to the good ole 'S' class... I took one through the whole pacific campaign in Silent Hunter I...
If this type IX fixation I've got continues I may even opt for Narwhal or Nautilus...
