I don't see why not. They were identical to the late-model Balaos except for a better dive depth.

I don't think they will make into the game. From what I've seen and heard we'll only get the Gato and Balao class.

One can only hope

"I don't see why not. They were identical to the late-model Balaos except for a better dive depth."

Was that the only difference? Why was the tower such a different shape?

Because that photo was taken between the '50s and '60s or so (I'm not quite sure). This conning tower was installed after the war ended.

That was a post war expemant. The G.U.P.P.Y(Greater Underwater Propulsion Program). A program started to see if the Gato/Balo/Trench classes could be made to par with the type XXI U-Boat(ie. modernized)

Thanks for the explanation. I thought you were yelling at me real loud.

My answer was going to be "good question-I don't know", but I like the other answers better.

lol sorry steve.... i figured your so far away that you wouldnt hear me unless i shouted my lungs out

The tench in that photo seems to be taking on the appearance of early cold war subs. Does anyone know when the tench class was eventualy scrapped for more modern vessles? I assume most gatos, balaos, tenches were in excess after the war and were sold to other countries...

This particular boat, USS Thornback (SS-418), was sold to the Turkish navy in 1971 - decommisioned from the US Navy in July of that year. The Turks used her for 28 years until she was turned into a floating museum
in Istanbul Turkey.

I seriously doubt that the Tench will be included, as I haven't heard any word about that from Ubi. I wish it would be, as I am here in Pittsburgh and the USS Requin at our Carnegie Science Center was a Tench Class. Regardless, I'll be sure to chose the Balao on my first single player mission and take a trip down to visit the Requin that week. I am so excited!

They removed the deck guns and the AA batteries too during GUPPY. I saw a modified Tench in Baltimore during Christmas, the USS Torsk. She's a beautiful boat, although they put the conning tower off limits and I couldn't go look through the scope. I think the USN used her as a training boat for the better part of the Cold War.

I think besides the greater dive depth as SailorSteve already pointed out, the Tench class also carried 28 torpedos instead of 24. However, they really weren't available to the Pacific was in time to have an impact as the Balao and Gato classes had already "gotten the job done".

Cheers!

I have a book called "Fleet Submarines," a Warship Data Special(sorry I dont have the Author(s) name(s), nor do I have the publishing info, but it tells of only one Tench class submarine actually seeing action. (The book is more of a booklet) I am at school, and I dont have the book readily available, but I will post this probably tomorrow. Also, it says that there is a surprisingly small amount of pictures available of the Tench. Most were scrapped or the actual building of these boats were cancelled.
I also forgot the name of the boat, I think it's the Remora? Also, some of the Tench were sold to different countries, even as late as 1973.
This could be a reason that there aren't any Tench boats in SH4.

Tench class:

There were 146 boats authorized in the class but only 31 were completed - many being commissioned after the war was over. The rest were cancelled as the war was clearly coming to a close.

The following Tench boats made war cruises:

Tench (well that figures)
Thornback
Tigrone
Tirante
Trutta
Toro
Torsk
Argonaut
Quillback
Runner
Cutlass

The Torsk did - it is on the list above. Becuna was a Balao.

Hey everyone.
Here are those books I spoke of...
1. The Floating Dry Dock
A Pictorial Histories Publication
Fleet Submarines of World War Two
Warship's Data Special
Author: Thomas F. Walkowiak
ISBN: 0-933126-72-7
Only fo0r Gato, Balao, and Tench classes. Lotsa info and the differences between them.

Also here's another one thats pretty good...
2. New Vanguard
Osprey Publishing
US Submarines 1941-45
Author: Jim Christley
Illust.: Tony Bryan
ISBN: 1-84176-859-6

I am listing these as I can't take my computer to bed and I like to have some bed time reading on the subject. I also rented Jane's Fighting ships of WW2, just to get a feel of the types of vessels that will be encountered. Also, my copy is paid in full at EB games!
