Thanks for posting the photos McBeck, they're terriffic! Wow, everything looks so old. Those guys had balls man!

By the way, in the last couple of shots there are two depth charge shaped things, under the back of the conning tower. What were they for?

Those, I believe, are storage lockers. They were located in various parts around the sail.

By the way, in the last couple of shots there are two depth charge shaped things, under the back of the conning tower. What were they for? From the Pampanito homepage:
Storage Canisters: The large canisters mounted on the aft end of the conning tower were used to store a quick supply of shells for the deck gun. They kept the shells dry and protected them from sea pressure during a dive. The smaller canisters contained shells for the 30 or 50 caliber machine guns which were mounted on the larger diameter deck stanchions.

I am shocked that such tools of imperial aggression are allowed to sully San Franscisco bay!

Yea, the "Bay Area Patriots Society" could hold their meetings in a phone booth. ;)

I have a copy of Orville Wright's memoirs. In it he talks about the first 1903 flight:
"If someone today asked me to climb into a strange machine, one that had never been flown at all, and attempt to take off into a 35-miles-per-hour-wind, I would say that he was crazy. At the time, we thought we knew what we were doing."

Great pictures,
I was there last August!
From your pictures of the Pampanito's deck gun, seems that you were there before me.

Little O.T.I'm currently reading "IN HARMS WAY" by Doug Stanton,I'ts the story of the sinking and servival of the men of the USS INDIANAPOLIS which was torpedoed and sunk in the south Pacific by a Japanese sub on July30 1945 after completing a highly secret mission.

All I can say is.....WOW......this is a very powerful book!Have any of you read it?

Nice pics, McBeck!

I have been out there a number of times (used to live by the Bay Area). Was up there about 4 months ago to take my wife on the tour. She was really excited about actually getting the opportunity to go on the sub. It's a nice ship. You really get some nice insight regarding the confines the crew had to deal with while on patrol.

We have the Requin (sp?) here in Pittsburgh that is a Tench class sub. Unfortunately (or not), it is a post war Guppy conversion which look kinda funny. I much prefer the "classic" sail of a wartime Gato/Balao/Tench.

The interiors are neat though.

These pics are from my trip to the US in the summer of 2005.

I went again in December 2006, but just to show for a mug :)
That is, I was in SF anyway and stopped to pick up a mug.
