They're ahead of me in math, and yet here I am going on a straight A through to my Master's degree already :p

I'm not real smart on math, but I like to use swing point theroy everytime I go to the store ...
If I spend $5.00 on something I don't need I have to make that up with another $5.00 on something I need, thereby having to work twice as hard to make $10.00 to purchase the item I really needed.
Helps me keep the original $5.00 in my pocket. :yep:
You know swing points ... :know:

Way to go, CCIP! Math is an overrated subject anyway. If only we spent a fraction of the time spent teaching math to students in high school on the social studies, the world would be a better place.:know:

Try designing a launch vehicle, jet engine, or bridge with anything you learn in a Social Studies curriculum.
Eh, eh, let's not put either side down here. Plenty of people are mathematically-inclined - but I'm not one of them and neither are quite a few others. Let everyone have their place shall we ;)
And while we're at it, let's keep a balanced curriculum so we don't end up with people who are illiterate in either math or social sciences. Both are bad variations. For the record, I've always been snappy with basic arithmetic and geometry, but when we got to the more complex algebra/geometry/calculus, I faltered. I did alright with finite, surprisingly, but my heart just wasn't in math after grade 11, or natural sciences for that matter.

Precisely what I mean. Not knocking those who don't study the mathematical, engineering, and scientific related fields. There are plenty of other areas of study which do not entail any of this. More power to em'. But I don't think our world would be a better place by substituting math related fields for more social studies. Perhaps even replacing it as someone else speculated. Bridges wouldn't get built, newer and better aircraft engines wouldn't be designed, and all the nifty things we do in space wouldn't happen. When in college, as an engineering major, I thought these Social Studies classes were not a valued part of my time. While I see the value of those fields, and respect them, I have no personal interest in them. I'm sure those in the Liberal Arts field would cringe if they had to take Rigid Body Dynamics and so forth for their "breadth" and "General Ed" requirements. They might even consider it a waste of their time.
P.S. I'm not sure I'm mathematically "inclined" either. I had to work real hard to put everything together mentally to pass alot of my own curriculum. Some of those early weed out courses were ridiculously difficult. I can relate totally to the hangman above. :rotfl:
I'm not trying to say that math is useless, or that it should be eliminated, I just think that the social sciences do not get enough emphasis in schools, hence the geographic and historical ignorance of so many students these days. I am concerned that social studies is being put on the back burner, if not almost entirely eliminated in many public schools now that they try to meet the standards of no child left behind, which put a disproportionate amount of emphasis on math. Math can do all kinds of great stuff, and I wouldn't want to live in a world without talented individuals that can exploit it's benefits, but I also want to live in a world with properly informed global citizens!

As a former History major in college...good point! Sadly enough, the "counselors" today steer people away from History Majors especially education because 'the system is overloaded with Social Studies teachers'.:nope::nope:

As a current History major (minoring in PoliSci and pursuing a Jewish Studies Certificate, in addition to being Pre-Law) in college...I agree that there is a place for social sciences and one for mathematics. I will admit that there are times that I've felt like a slacker compared to some of my pre-Med/math majoring friends. Despite that, the looks on some of my friends' faces when I told them that I will be doing an honors thesis next year that will eventually weigh in at 90-150 pages was priceless. Each field is difficult in its own way, and its better not to knock any of them.

Well, #3 and #4 are pretty basic stuff, I know you have to be capable of answering those questions to pass College Algebra. And no matter what degree plan you're in, you have to be able to pass algebra, right?

Wasn't intended as a "shot" across the bow, or even an insult. I was just pointing out that math should not be replaced by social studies. As a proud citizen of the USA , my point is without math, this world would be worse off. Math is not an "overrated subject" at all.

Agreed. Even if the area of study is history, literature, or other social subjects, math and critical thinking courses are essential. And I'm not a "math whizz" or fan, but there is no avoiding it: math counts.

Surprisingly, no! The college I go to does not require any math courses unless you are in a math or science field.:hmm:
Correct. I don't have any math requirements either (BA in Linguistics, MA in Applied Language Studies).
I didn't take math, but didn't stop me from taking a broad range of totally unrelated stuff - from Geography to HTML. I for one love variety... just not so much pure math :p

We do have a math requirement, but it's minimal. I've fulfilled it with Statistics and Financial Accounting.
