View Full Version : ****March 2007 Subsim Contest ****

Onkel Neal
02-26-07, 09:55 PM
This is a contest for those supportive Subsim skippers who ordered an early copy of the 2007 Subsim Almanac. My way of saying "thanks!"

First three guys to post a picture of yourself holding up your copy of the 2007 Subsim Almanac will get a ping prize.

First guy wins a Subsim Battle Mug

Next two guys win a jumbo SH4 poster.
http://www.subsim.com/sh4/images/subsim1.jpg

Post it in this thread, and win! To qualify, you had to purchase a copy of the book. Staff and contributors not eligible this time around.

If you are not one of the first three, post a pic anyway, I will give away a consolation prize for the most imaginitive, humorus and wittiest pic. (Hint: Use a little imagination, humor, wit in your picture ;) ). So get that digital camera out, put on your skipper's cap, grab your Revell U-boat model, whatever. :)

Los!

I'm not sending in a picture, Neal, but do want to say I'm thoroughly enjoying the read.

Neal,

If I can make a suggestion. I was thinking the other week of a thread that is a sticky where eveyone takes a photo of themselves holding the Subsim Almanac in front of local/national landmarks. At least that is what I was thinking. I'm off home to Australia for a few weeks soon and hopefully my copy of the Subsim Almanac will arrive soon so it can do a tour with me of back home. I would have started this thread except that I don't have my copy yet.

So what do you think? :D

I wish I had mine already so I could hold it up too. Congrats to the first guys, you must have had those delivered in XXI's while mine is probably sailing around the world in a sweet little II. ;)

I have got my copy, but on the same day I found a copy of combat fleets 1990 and Janes 1980 in a local charity shop so I have been a bit torn what to read first.Tje almanac is a good read and Neal should be very proud of his production.

The Euro surface orders should be arriving any day now. A few guys have gotten them.

But, since guys like Kapitan and Konovalov were in the first group to order but are still waiting for the mail boat to dock, I am going to expand the scope of this contest, to ensure you all get a fair chance to participate.

Since we have at this point had exactly three guys post their smiley faces, and they are the three who win the first three prizes, this should be okay with everyone, right? Those three guys won the "first post wins" part of this event.

So, the 2007 Submarine Almanac contest will now be open to all participants, contributors and purchasers alike. The deadline is extended to April 10, 2007.

No rush, whether you now have your copy of the great Subsim book or are still waiting, even those who decide to order now (and ship priority/airmail). Just get the coolest, most interesting picture of yourself and your copy of the Almanac (no photoshop fakes, please) in this thread. Like Konovalov said, have the picture take at a historic landmark, on a battleship, submarine, in costume, skydiving, in your bathtub (please be sure to have plenty of bubbles in the right places!), alongside a famous person, favorite loved one, etc.

The picture will be judged by a panel composed of me, a WWII submarine officer, a nuclear submarine commander, a best selling submarine author, and a noted game designer. The picture we vote as the best, will win....

...a copy of SUPER COLLECTOR'S EDITION SILENT HUNTER 4!
This package is one of the 3000. Unopened, with all the goodies.

Prize details (http://shop.ubi.com/SH4/UK/)

Even if you have to buy a copy of the 2007 Submarine Almanac (http://www.subsim.com/almanac/) today, you will be happy to learn that no submarines were harmed in its production, and so far, everyone who has it tells me it is great reading and a wonderful souvenir of the 10th Anniversary of Subsim, our happy little home on the web. :)

First three runnerups will win Subsim swag (mug, shirt, or mousepad).

So, get your brain in gear, start planning to win this prize, it could be sitting on your desk real soon!

Good hunting!

Neal, would purchasing the Almanac be considered a donation? Or does it all go to Amazon or whereever?

Onkel Neal
02-27-07, 08:04 PM
Yes, purchasing the Almanac is like a donation. It's only available through Subsim here (http://www.subsim.com/almanac/)at this time.

One more question Neal. What do I have to write/give besides the money if I want to order by the USPS (Ground Mail)? And do I have to write anything? Or do I just put the money in an envelope? Also, do you give return change?

Onkel Neal
02-27-07, 08:21 PM
If you are going order by mail, simply include your name and address, and request a copy of the Almanac. Send a check or money order, if possible. I accept cash in the mail but I prefer checks/MO.

Is it the "teach your Dog tricks" book?? Is that it? you have taught your dog how to dress himself with no help, and to repay you for this wonderful gift he has painted your portrait...That IS a neat trick.

PS are you Harrison Ford or Nick Faldo?

"Did you hear someone say flooding?"
"I don't know...what chapter are you on?"

Little back ground: The guy looking at the camera is the Leading Petty Officer for Submarine School Restriction and the guy reading is me, the Leading Petty Officer for Transient Personnel Unit at Submarine School. The picture is taken in the Damage Control Wet Trainer located at Submarine School, Groton CT. Thank god my buddy didn't turn on the flange leak or we would be getting new copies of the Subsim Almanac. As it was that was just one leak of many that he could have activated but in the interest of keeping my camera safe and dry he kept his sub humor in check. I must also give credit to the guy taking the photo who is a Aviation Structural Mechanic who was nervous being in a room that floods. Guess not a true submariner at heart. ;)

I live in Finland, so it might take a while until the Subsim Almanac surfaces from my mail box :shifty:
And the fact that I ordered the Almanac today and not weeks ago, won't help it coming faster either.

I also pre-ordered the so called "normal" collector's edition of SH IV from Finnish webshop some days ago and I'm waiting it too... and since it went to gold, I'm kinda hoping it would be at shops and at my hands soon.

So "slow days" at the moment. Fortunately I have just received "Iron Coffins" -book by Herbert A. Werner and I shift between reading it and playing SH3 :D

Really appreciate it but in all honesty to the other applicants...I was worried because I thought there was some equally good pics.

Again thanks a lot and will send the info along. By the way I'm in the process of recruiting a new nub into subsim. That big lug next to me with the funny smile who doesn't mind getting wet is interested.
