Hi,
first of all, its my first Post here, so I hope I`ll do everything right ;)

My problem is that i can`t install Silent Hunter 3 from DVD. The Computer simply reboots at some point of the installation. A few days ago i bought some new components for my PC (CPU, ram, mainboard, graphics card), so first i thought of some kind of hardware failure.
But the windows installation was fine, "Doom 3" and "Rome Total War" were installed without problems and I could play them, Prime95 ran for over an hour on both CPU Cores and Windows itself runs also stable, not a single crash.
One weird thing is that i could install Silent Hunter 3 one single time, to be exact the first time I installed it. But then the PC did a reboot on the GWX Installation and I was forced to reinstall the game. At this point i wasn`t able to do it again, even after a fresh windows Installation.

Here is a list of my hardware:

Core 2 Duo E6300
2GB DDR2-800 Ram
Asus P5B Mainboard
XpertVision GeForce 7600GT
Windows XP SP 2

Well, i`am not even sure if its a problem with Silent Hunter 3, so if anyone has a idea how I can exclude a hardware-failure or how at least i can identify the damaged component i would be glad.

Thanks in advance, jth.

P.S.: SH3 never asked for my Product Key thats printed on the DVD. Instead it begins the installation immediatley. Or is that normal and he asks for it after completing the copying of the files? I have the original DVD here, so it shouldn`t be a Starforce problem, but who knows? :-?

I looked for some viruses or malware, but Antivir didn`t find some...

An easy way to check if there is a problem with your DVD or your DVD-ROM is to try to install it the game in another computer.

To find out what's causing the reboot goto.....

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings

Remove the tick on the 'Automatically Restart' box.

Now, when the PC needs to reboot it wil post an error code/message first.

Please tell us what this says.

Hi, thanks for the answer. I will try it as soon as I can get another PC with a DVD Rom. I think in one or two days i can try this.

First of all, thanks for your welcome :D

Well, actually nothing happened. No Error Message or something else. But it seems the Computer isn`t rebooting like it does when you chose "Reboot" from the windowsmenu. The PC shuts down completely and then restarts automatically after roughly 1-2 seconds.
But I took a look at the Systemlog and it says "Produkt: Silent Hunter III -- Installationsvorgang erfolgreich abgeschlossen." which means "Product: Silent Hunter III -- Installation completed successfully", which is certainly not the case because its interrupted by the shutdown at circa 1/3 of 100 percent of the Installation.

Thanks to a friend of mine I could get my Hands at some old external DVD-Writer. To my surprise the Installation went fine there. Maybe it`s the IDE-Bus (but the Harddisk on it works fine...) or my internal DVD-Rom. However, problem solved as far as i can see. Time trying GWX :)

Many thanks for your help melnibonian and danlisa.

Glad you have your game up and running. Now stop thanking people and go to sink someone in GWX;) :D
