Do you know one of the things that struck me most when I played SH3 I thought it was extremely cool. I suppose because I am easily pleased it was a nice feeling to think I was standing on the conning tower of MY sub. It was very nice.
You know, it really pulls you in, especially when you have German language on and your watch officer calls out ship spotted or you are sailing along on a calm day with clear skies. I really do feel like the captain, I sort of cant help feel I should have a captains hat on and be smoking a pipe!
I like going up to the bridge that was my best feature before I discovered "ALLLLARRRRMMMMMM"

Yeah, its quite a cool feeling, especially during major storms and such with ur boat rocking back and forth.

In GWX, you can actually get seasick, which has been confirmed by numerous players in the past. :yep:

Penelope, I think that's true for a lot of people...this game is very, very popular, even for people who hate sims. I know Quake gamers, who have the attention span of 15 seconds, who play this game. As for me, I also love the feeling of controlling your own sub...and I'm addicted to the exploding ships, I know it's a bit morbid but I just love seeing ships go under.
This must be the most "real" feeling game I ever played. Even Flight Simulator 2004 doesn't feel this real and that's supposed to be a geniune flight sim. SH3 has made sub sims "cool", something which I wouldn't have thought possible even a few years ago.
p.s. I think ladies would've made excellent Kaleuns...pity BDU never thought of it...

Just done two hours at 180 meters with two destroyers trying to DC me - now that's immersive!!!!
Mind you it was worth it. We got the Nelson:up: Tomorrow we'll have another go:D
I enjoy going out of harbour. The problems one runs into are IDENTICAL to the real thing. The only thing missing is the cool breeze. Going out on my last patrol, the escort boat did it's normal 180 then suddenly went full astern, changed course and I had to do some fast work to avoid collision.
I also love to spot a smudge on the horizon before my lookouts do.
GWX does a pretty good job of putting you where the action is.

The whole appeal to this stuff for me is the immersion. I couldn't care less about arcade like action and huge tonnage scores. I just want it to be realistic! SHIII really did a good job. Actually, it did an ok job. The modders turned this game into something so much more then how it was shipped.
By the way Penelope, if you like to immerse yourself, maybe you should check out www.wolvesatwar.com! Talk about a fun and immersive environment!

The bridge and command room are two of my favourite rooms, unfortunately, the game is designed to be played in the nav-map view mostly, mainly because of time compression/crew-fatigue issues, but also because some information, like "radio" received contacts, is only detectable by the player when in the nav-map view.
Still, spending time on the bridge is always aluring.
The immersiveness is what got me hooked to SH3 from the get-go. Everything just looked and sounded so cool.
I played pretty much everything else, but I wasn't ever a subsimmer before I discovered SH3.

The bridge is the best spot. I have always said this game needs a player with a good imagination. Reason being, the only scripted part(if you can call it that) is going to the assigned grid. After that, it is up to you and your mind to take you the next step. Only you and your decision keeps your the crew dead or alive.

That is what got me, the immersiveness. I thought my brother was positively mental the way he would curse the stinking weather or when he would yell in joy when his torpedo punched the side of a ship or when he would be sat at the PC and would literally sometimes be sweating slightly as he tried to evade Depthcharges. I mean, I though, yeah, lights are on but nobody is home!
Till I of course had a go and now SH3 is just one to add to my many addictions. lol I do all the exact same things he does now, we are two nutters united in our appreciation of a certain submarine simulation. Everything is so well done, the water is beatufiul in it.
p.s. I think ladies would've made excellent Kaleuns...pity BDU never thought of it...
I don't really know if I would agree with that, because I think it would have been quite difficult for a woman to command a boat with 50 men on board. Also, there is the danger aspect, I know you have women soldiers today, but imagine being inside a metal tube 500 feet underwater with depthcharges dropping all round you that is scary, I just don't think the average woman, despite equal rights and all that would be up to it. I know I wouldn't. Then again... how many of the boys here think they could cope in a U-boat?

The correct answer to that question is that no one ever knows what they are capable of until they actually go through it. Many people who talk big chicken out when the time comes, and many who think themselves weak stand up to the worst of it. A lot of times when asked about their bravery in battle, soldiers have said things like "I wasn't brave; I was just too afraid to have my friends think I was a coward, so I acted brave instead."
When the chips are down you always surprise yourself.

I would dare say that soiled undergarments would be my answer to depth charges:dead:.
Claustrophobic comes to mind when I think of being under the water and not allowed to come up for hours on end. I have not played 100% no outside views yet because not seeing the DD circle and just looking at the 1st officer with that crap eating grin on his face would make me go a little nuts:doh:

the term "the average woman" shouldn't even come into the picture, because the typical u-boat crew wasn't average, so any captain would have to be above average,,,,can there be an above average woman,,,,yes,,,,,,but

I said average woman as a sort of a generalisation, I seriously doubt back in the 1940's you would have had women volunteering to be in a U-boat, was this due to social attitudes? Or was it just because your typical woman under no circumstances would put herself in such a position?
For me it would be the latter.

I know that during World War 2, women in the UK would ferry Hurricanes and Spitfires to their respective bases. That was quite dangerous in itself. I remember seeing a documentary where a male "ferry pilot" refused a certain job because of bad weather and a female ferry pilot volunteered for it". Also, these pilots were pretty brave because you have to consider their planes were unarmed, yet the German pilots didn't know or care and would shoot them down regardless.
I was thinking of female Kaleuns being good because generally women have more patience than men...

That is what my wife and kids are for! The wife rocks my chair and the kids sprits salt water on my face. While on the bridge they use buckets full of it. Great storm effect! Fan sits in the front! None of us shower for days. Gets quite ripe but the immersion you can not beat:up:

I think a lot of differences between genders would be meanningless in something like this. It just takes a certain type of person to become captain, and so regardless of gender they'd just be the same type of person.
The issue I'd see with a female captain would be having an all male crew, that could get troublesome after being out in the seas for a while. Although history shows us it DOES in fact work, one has to wonder how good an idea it'd be to do on a large scale...
