I had a great time today meeting Onkel Neal and the volunteer staff of the USS Cavalla in Galveston! I helped out (actually more or less tried to stay out of the way!) with the loading of a couple torpedoes into the forward torpedo room.

Here's my photo album of the Cavalla and some pictures I took on the DE USS Stewart, which is also at Seawolf Park in Galveston. I didn't get as many as I would have liked of the actual torpedo load, but there's a ton of pictures of the interior of a Gato-class submarine. Enjoy! :D

Nice pics...

Hey Neal, What about that sign that reads: Do not turn valves etc.
Are you guys afraid Cavalla will sink..? :rotfl:

If I ever get to the neighborhood I'll pay Cavalla a visit...

These are all great pics, and it got me to thinking about an off-topic:
When I click on Neal's or mook's picture links above, it opens in the same window (blowing away the Subsim forums in that window).
And I even use Firefox with special Tab Mix Plus to pretty much fix everything to open up in a new tab, and not in the same window.
So ... does anyone know how, when providing a link in a forum posting, how to make it open in a new tab or new window? Is it even possible to force it?
Thanks.

Mookiemookie and Neal,
Great pictures, wish I could have been there to help. I don't recall electric winches to help load. All we had was pulleys. block and tackle, and chain falls. But then again there was a whole lot of hands to help.........Great Job.........

No electric winches for us either. Chain falls, manual winches, and elbow grease.

Mookie,
Did they let you load th "fish" in the torpedo tube?

No, while that would have been really neat, they were stowed under the crew bunks on the port and starboard sides on the floor for display purposes. Getting them in the hatch and into the compartment was only half the work. Actually moving them over to the sides was a big job as well!

So you met the great god? :rotfl:

A question though. What's that glass circle in the Controol room chart table?

That was the compass. Sorry I didn't get a good shot of it. I was just overwhelmed with trying to get upclose shots of all the interesting gauges and controls that I missed some. I'll have to go back one of these days.
