View Full Version : Variable Renown depending on the year?

I was thinking about this for quite some time now. In SH3/GW/GWX (and I think in NYGM) the renown value you get for each ship type you sink is the same throughout the war. We all have to agree though that in the early years it's far too easy to sink ships than it is in 1944-45. So I was thinking if it would be possible to have variable renown depending on the year. For example a Tanker gives 100 renown points (the value is totally artificial just for the sake of the argument here) during the war. What I'm suggesting is for a slight increase in renown value per year. Let's say 10% (again just for the sake of the argument). That will give 100 points in 1939, 110 in 1940, 121 in 1941, 133.1 in 1942 and so on until we reach a value of 177.1561 in 1945. This final value is significantly higher than the original one of 100 and signifies the level of difficulty to sink that tanker in 1945 with respect to 1939. Obviously I don't know if the renown values are hard-coded or if what I'm suggesting is non-practical from the scripting and coding point of view. So I'm willing to hear ideas and opinions on the subject.

Great idea :up: . But don't know about that hardcoding....

Great idea :up: . But weren't the renown values hardcoded?:cry:
To tell you the truth I have no idea. I will have to ask BBW or JScones for that (with respect to GWX at least) but I'm asking for opinions so I can 'present my case' to the GWX Dev Team if it is possible to do something like that;) :D

I think you should go for it. I love the concept.
Increasing difficulty = increasing rewards.
It makes sense as reward for the increase in difficulty.

I think you're on to something here, Herr Kaleun. As always, more risk = more reward!

It just occured to me this is probably a dish best served by SH3 commander.
How much renown a ship is woth is NOT hardcoded, its defined by the ships CFG file. How much of that value your awarded is based on the realism percentage your playing. For example if your playing at 90% realism, and the target is worth 100 renown, you get 90 renown.
The easiest way would be to take all the CFG files for the ships, adjust the renown rewarded and stick it into SH3 commander at a given year.

You can do it yourself too. But it will require 1000+ .cfg files packed in 6 different jsgme mods, one for each year after 1939. So...yes, SH3Cmmdr would be better...:damn:

It's a very minor and simple extension to the random tonnage feature already existing in SH3Cmdr - by default most merchant tonnage is increased each year by about 2%. To apply a similar logic to the renown is effortless.
But alas, it's not big enough to warrant a new SH3Cmdr release, especially with SH4 just around the corner...
And unfortunately, SH3Cmdr is the only efficient way to achieve your aim. The GWX team won't be able to help you. ;)
There is another way - the second most efficient way - but still a PITA. It requires you editing SH3Cmdr's "Static settings.cfg" file thus:
[0:data\Sea\NCOT\NCOT.cfg]
ApplyToPeriod=19390901|19391231
Unit|RenownAwarded=40
[1:data\Sea\NCOT\NCOT.cfg]
ApplyToPeriod=19400101|19401231
Unit|RenownAwarded=44
[2:data\Sea\NCOT\NCOT.cfg]
ApplyToPeriod=19410101|19411231
Unit|RenownAwarded=48
etc etc for each year for each ship class under the Seas folder. The tonnage will still be randomised by SH3Cmdr, but the renown will increase as each year progresses. The flexible thing is that the periods do not need to be whole years - you can set whatever dates you want.
Downside to this approach is a) having to enter it all in the file and b) the fact that it would be "locked" into working only with GWX (prolly not a real problem, but I'm sure it would raise q's - just needs to be clearly pointed out).
It's a good idea though.

I hope then it will be included in the next version of SH3 Commander. Whenever that comes ofcourse...:up:

You should also take into consideration that some ships are more valuable for the enemy than other ships. At some point Britain had only fuel reserves for 6 weeks or so. Considering that tanker should be far more valuable and therefor they should give you more renown. I hope you get what I want to say.;)
