View Full Version : I'm being punished!!!

Jaesen of JonesSoft has just clarified my error in failing to apply the GWX patch 1.02 by informing me that there is a GWX and a Grey Wolves, two entirely different programs.
My Subsim DVD has a complete Grey Wolves installation, but it's apparent that only the GWX installer made it onto the disk; no support / bin files. But what a wealth of tweaks, mods, enhancements I have received !
Ironically, only last month I gathered my original copies of AOD, AOD-CD, AOD exp., CAOD, Subcommand, Fast Attack, 688I, and SH2, and consigned them to the dustbin.
Neptune must be miffed with me.
What I need from the community is the know-how to acquire my missing GWX bin files from Subsim without undergoing the lengthy downloading through a dial-up.
Or is this the punishment i deserve...?

Welcome to Subsim
I don't think GWX was ever offered by way of DVD through Subsim. There is a torrent download if you use them. There are also people who (if in your area) will only be too glad to bundle the lot onto a DVD for you and mail it.
I don't have the disk from Subsim but, just to be clear, I have to assume that what you received is ONLY the GW 1.0 or 1.1a files and NOT anything to do with GWX. Also, the mods/extras that were on this disc may or may not work with GWX.
I'm affraid that this is the 'nature of the beast', mod compatibilty can not be assumed when the core files (GWX) have been changed.
Anywho, to your problem.....whereabouts in this world do you live? We'll see if we can't get a DVD to you.

Hope I'm operating this thread reply right...
Hello, danlisa !
The DVD does have two sub-directories, one with Grey Wolves as the name, the other as GWX; except the GWX is carrying only the installer. As we type, I'm up to 113MB on the download :dead: , and face a few more days at this rate.
I'm almost a quarter of the world away, in a little province called Texas.
P.S. Good Morning ! :sunny:

We have players/members who live in Texas.:yep: In fact, Kpt.Lehmann, GWX Team Leader lives there.(I know it's a big place), however, he's having PC probs at the moment.
If you're managing with the d/l then carry on. Is it via torrent or standard d/l link?
The torrent would be the best choice for you as you are assured to get a complete/uncorrupted copy.

Danlisa, the download is the only way I have of getting the data up to now. Unfortunately, it's not my phone line, nor my service. :-?
It's a modem. I don't know what Torrent is. I'm going through the software on the SH3 DVD, GameShadow ?
Jimbuna ! Hello ! Thank you !

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer) (P2P) file distribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_sharing) protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_protocol). The protocol was originally designed and created by programmer Bram Cohen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bram_Cohen), and is now maintained by BitTorrent, Inc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent%2C_Inc.)
BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data) widely without the original distributor incurring the whole of the corresponding costs of hardware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware), hosting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosting) and bandwidth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwidth) resources. Instead of the distributor alone servicing each recipient, under BitTorrent the recipients each also supply data to newer recipients, thus significantly reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source as well as providing redundancy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundancy) against system problems, and reducing dependence upon the original distributor.

Basically, you can stop/start downloading whenever you want to and not loose any d/l progress. I use a small program called uTorrent - http://www.utorrent.com/. This will just sit in your task bar working away without bothering you.

Danlisa speaks the truth...visit www.utorrent.com (http://www.utorrent.com) and download this tiny program. Then when you've installed it, visit the GWX thread and Mods folder at the top of this thread and you will find a torrent link for GWX. Click on the torrent and it will ask you to save the file to disk. either save it to the desktop or create yourself a folder for all of your torrents. This download will take a couple of seconds at most, but it won't be the actual program, it just tells Utorrent what files to look for. click on this file and the fun begins...utorrent will start up and ask you where to save the files, and once you have indicated a folder, the d/l begins. Pay attention to the number of seeders, as this tells you how many people are sharing files with you (obviously, the more the better). Also your download speed tells you if the files are streaming in slowly or just being gobbled up by your computer. Time remaining is pretty obvious and will give you an idea of when you can hope to fire up GWX....
good luck and I hope this helps.

High Voltage, that is a *torrent* of information ! Thank you.
mookiemookie, my thanks ! I am only into the download 19%. If I were in a race, I would be waaay behind. And every time I access a web page, it slows down.
And I've been accessing a lot of web pages, what with reading the FAQ and learning the lingo. I'll take you up on your offer and contact you as soon as I can...as soon as I learn what PM is...
Perhaps I can show my gratitude by buying you a book from the SUBSIM store. It would be allowed right , as I would be thanking you for your kindness and not purchasing the software from you. :yep:
