The whole world map is included in SH4 ... Electric Boat is in New London, Conn
and just on the other side of the river Thames, is the submarine base in Groton, Conn,
but it is called New London Naval Submarine Base.
Here's some basic information to help orientate you to the original home base for your new fleet boat ...
We may even be able to take off from here someday.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/new_london.htm
On the east bank of the Thames River near Groton, CT, New London Naval Submarine Base was the birthplace of the submarine force. It was originally a Navy yard, converted to a submarine base in 1916, and greatly expanded in World War II.
Today the Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE NLON) is located on the east side of Thames River in Groton CT. All submariners in today's Navy will be stationed here for training and perhaps a tour onboard a fast attack submarine or with a pre-commissioning crew while their new submarine is under construction.

The question is: will we be able to take command of a sub built on the east coast and transfer it to the Pacific? They've modeled NY so I hope I can take my sub from Groton to Pearl.

I'll meet up w/ you in Pearl if that's OK Capt'n as I prefer to leave the sightseeing to the tourists.
;)
Hey, any 1x enthusiasts going to go this route if it's available?

And no shortcuts, you have to take the route around Cape Horn.

I don't have to go that far. I have the secret maps for the Northwest Passage.

A fleet boat's too big for a freight train, right?
Probably, yes. I believe they went through Panama Canal, didn`t they?

You believe correctly.
We can only hope that we can believe the same for SH4

"A fleet boat's too big for a freight train, right?"
I'm sorry guys, it's a facetious remark. I was just joking. I shouldn't really try that. A fleet boat is quite a large ship and is way too big for a flat-car.
Getting to the Atlantic will be a once in a life-time (The bear went over the mountian to see what he could see.) trip for most people, especially if the only way there is around the capes, the Horn or Good Hope.
You know, I never looked: did anyone model a Panama passageway in SH3? I've never seen it mentioned, and it had not occured to me before. I've a soft spot for the old canal, as I was stationed there in the 60's, and once paddled through in rubber boats following a sub through when we were doing small boat training. Gatun Lock was our IP for the Gatun drop zone next to the old French Canal and tidal basin. Trying to get out of an antique C-46 Air-Commando with full dive gear and a parachute on was an experience.
Yeah, the worlds major canals were modded into SH3, and are present in most of the current supermods including GWX.
But they're no more than glorified rivers, with no locks to speak of.

"A fleet boat's too big for a freight train, right?"
But not too big for a barge ... they use to build WWII boats in Winconsin and barge them down the Miss to the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks Boris,
I'm going to go look. I ought be able to pick up some trade off Cartegena or Maracaibo along the way. My IX ought to have enough fuel to make it there and back again if I'm careful. Any idea what the air cover is like off Colon? That was one of the most heavily defended places in the world, and I don't think any German or Japanese ever risked approaching it.
"... they use to build WWII boats in Winconsin"
Wisconsin!?
Geetrue, did anyone ever put a sub of any type, maybe training, on the Great Lakes?

Manitowoc Wisconsin to be exact.

In the discription of the game on the UK CE, it sounds like you will be warped to your patrol zone like the first SH. I believe it said 5 detailed maps. I'll recheck this though.
I guess it's 15 maps. This maybe for scenarios only though.

Neal said that the "15 maps stuff" is BS. They modeled the whole Pacific and you can chose were to go (NO patrol grids) but you may get orders to go to certain place to help fight a battle (Battle of Midway e.g.).
I'm sure you'll get orders from the outset too, right?
That 15 map thing shocked me when I read it a few weeks ago... I'm glad that was a mistake, would have been a huuuuge leap backwards for the series.

I'm not sure where I've read it but the devs have said that you could go where you want to. Strange, huh?
Yeah, it was a mistake made in some preview somewhere. It's now been confirmed it's just like in SH3.

So we're being assigned to a certain location prior to leaving port?
Not sure, but we'll have the whole ocean to patrol like in SH3. And it would seem a little strange to just head out with no orders... surely you get a region assigned or something, or a mission right from the outset.

Sure, we have the whole Pacific to patrol but the devs made it sound that you are not assigned any patrol grid. That would change of course if you're ordered to drop of commandos or if you get additional orders.
We'll find out soon enough

Did you say "SOON"?:o I'm a very, very, very impatient person and I have to wait a full month to get that game. Drives me nuts.:p Did I say that I was impatient?:rotfl:
