Question:
Is it true that when you upgrade to vista, that your xp pro key becomes "blacklisted" and useless. and that you would not be able to reinstall xp. Is there any truth to this?
Answer:
Unfortunately, this is true if you purchase the upgrade version of Windows Vista. When you purchase the upgrade it asks you to give your XP code and then makes it not able to validate anymore, which makes it completely useless. I'm not sure if there is a possible (legal) way to reinstall Vista from the upgrade version since you need a valid XP license http://www.maximumpc.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif
As for reinstalling XP your code will become invalidated and unusable.
I'm keeping my XP pro for my grandchildren ... You ain't getting it back Microsoft (need a smiley that shakes it's head no)

i think microsoft should be punished with the way they are controlling the computer world with their major semi monopoly on OS, wut ive heard is after vista, the windows after vista will ONLY support 1 form of video cards, so this means no high end cards or no low end budget cards " to give intel graphics a chance":nope::nope: , those cheap s.o.b's basically all video cards will be the same cuz Bill Gates is not a man (physically:rotfl:) . that means all cards will be clocked the same with same speeds and same memory, which is stupid, and wont release SDK for direct x to nvidia and ati so them 2 companies are basically bankrupt.:dead::dead::dead: , this ive heard over and over since last year april. im gonna try find links

it will be bad for everyone cuz then regular performance cards = weak graphics = no good games:cry::cry::down::shifty:, so screw vista and screw bill gates, he has enough money why does he want more!!:nope::nope:, 57Billion in pocket cash is enough for him:nope::nope:, personally government steps in take away 57 billion and then spreads it among the ppor and fixes up the lower income familes who are struggling to survive, 57 billion in cash is good enough to fix the education and offer better health care to the less fortunate who badly need it, plus crackdown on immigration, ASW im pretty sure u hate those illegal mexican aliens right? i do too even tho im in canada they steal middle class jobs like the chinese econonmy also.
u know what screw this im creating thread on this lol.

Bill Gates is backing out of MS and concentrating on his charity work. I have no ill will for Bill. Vista is not the last OS MS is working either. This is per reading interview with Bill Gate and Time Magazine. Also, as far as card manufactures, there will be plenty to be had. It will take time for this is the videocard manufactures bread and butter. The whole gang will have cards for Vista. Just a matter of time. If I remember correctly XP received the same criticisms. Most said windows 98 is the best for games and yadda, yadda, yadda. MS supported 98 for years after XP was the leader in OS. They have since stopped. XP will be supported for sometime to come. Anyway, Vista will be just as nice as XP ever was....just a matter of time.

Way to lock you into Vista!!!??? Not even good. Suppose you want to downgrade and go back to your old system? This is a good way to keep you from doing that.

I can not say I have met someone who downgraded. Possibly a disclaimer on the upgraded box for Vista stating the installation of this OS will stop the use of your XP OS.

I have before - since my initial upgrade to XP broke some of my software. So I downgraded, and turned it into a dual boot platform for compatibilites sake.

 Another good reason not to upgrade to Vista.
if this is really true, then ffs the PC is not personal anymore...
because I want to install what I want and a company is not going to prevent me for installing a older product of them.
I thought about upgrading to Vista (Premium) just a few days ago, but if this is true, then there will be no way I will be buying an upgrade kit.:nope::down: I'm just lucky that I saw this thread before buying one.

Then can a person just partition the two on one computer?

It used to be with previous upgrade versions of Windows that you could install it on a blank drive. When it got to a certain point in the install, you simply had to put in a CD (or floppy) from a previous version of Windows, then the 'upgrade' would continue merrily on its way.
Now with Vista, you have to have a fully installed copy of the appropriate previous version of Windows on your computer before you can use the Vista upgrade, which means you have to keep your old XP CD around and pray you never lose that license code...which means if you had a onboard RAID controller you also have to keep that old floppy drive around with the drivers on it cuz you will need it to get XP installed...even if Vista supports it out of the box.

If you don't like the software license, don't buy the license. Find something else to do.
Buy a Macintosh. Use Linux. Use BSD. Go scuba diving. Learn a different language. Go traveling (to friendly countries, mind you). Get a tan. Get in shape (if you're not already). Same thing can be said for the RIAA (via Sony BMG, Atlantic, Columbia, etc.) and the MPAA (via Universal, Columbia, Warner, etc.). Find something else to listen or watch. Buy local CD's. Go to the concert. Watch Discovery HD.
Now, I mean, you could always pay the 13-year-old down the street for a warez copy of the volume-license-key version, but then you've got to deal with all the viruses and worms and updates. You'll be paying that 13-year-old a monthly maintenance fee to keep your computer updated.
In summary, I am done with Microsoft and Sony. I will do without if there is no other way to be found. The 13-year-old helps me pound my gutter screens flat after a hail-storm (dude, they get bent -- I hooked him up with $100).
Here's a wierd article about Vista a friend sent to me a while ago, quite amusing. From BBC no less...
