Finally got around to loading up GWX.

Thus far I've noticed something a tad... different. No, other than the almighty German Sailboat.

Transiting just north of the Orkneys on my way to the patrol zone. What is this? A Tramp Steamer! Oooooo!:sunny:

And he's driving like a drunken Exxon captain with too much time & vodka on his hands. I sank 2 Steamers in the same day and both would zag every 1 to 2.5 minutes which basically meant that they were going straight for maybe 20-30 seconds at a time. I even had one turn 90 degrees off base course before turning back.

So, my question: Is this a bit too extreme? I'm positive it makes getting a firing solution a real pain but the Steamers seemed to be wasting a lot of time turning.

They only start zig zagging when you have been detected
Until then they sail straight between the waypoints

Odd. It started zig-zagging at around 10km distance.

Also had a destroyer spot me & turn towards me from 10.5km. Is it a side effect of using the 16km mod?

Well if you can see 16km so can they
Not sure the merc would spot you from there unless you are surfaced going at speed

It may not have been zig zagging because of you
There are AI uboats out there
Will have to check if any that far north though

Cool.

Well, I may go back to 8km visual range in that case - as long as they're still not spotting me from over 10km.

And, yes, I was at Ahead Standard on the surface in the AM.

Thanks bigboywooly

There has been some talk of the 16km mod. Most believe day time the 16km mod is pretty good to RL. Unfortunate, at night the 16km mod works the same. There is no reduced visability. This cannot be modded into the game for what I understand. I use the 16km mod and like it. I just do not mind the night time 16km because lets face it, we are in a virtual world and things are different looking than the RL picture ones eye would paint in the brain. So I take it as benefit for the this reduce non-human aspect of the game.

I guess there's tradeoffs with using the 16km optional mod.

I think I'll be sticking to the 8km from now on. Easy mode? Perhaps. But trying to sneak up on something while submerged from over 10km is a real pain in the @ss. It seems they see me nearly as fast as I see them.
