For those in or near Germany that can pick up the GIGA channel, there is an SH4 preview in 30 mins at 2200.

You can watch the live-stream here regardless of where you are if you have DSL:

http://www.giga.de/features/live/

another 15 mins before it starts. As for recording... anyone know how to record streaming video?

trenken
02-19-07, 03:50 PM
I think you can record streaming video with some screen capture software such as Camtasia.Don't know how good the quality would be using something like that though.

I've gotten to his ranting about how slowly the boat dives. "Verdamt! Verdamt!":rotfl:

He was having trouble with the depth gauge... wasn't reacting at first... the dive sound appeared about 3 or 4 times. I kept thinking, let me do it goddammit! But he said it was a Beta bug.

Some decent footage though.

He'll come back in a minute to demonstrate a harbour raid against a BB.

Wow, impressed with what I'm finding here. Apparently he's not even playing it on full detail and it's looking awesome - bodes well for people with so-so video cards.

Some answers there already - I can see how the settings are gonna work; I can hear voices and sound effects now (which have largely migrated from SHIII, for better or worse - sound mods will do em good, hope someone finally dares to do a full voicepack for SHIV!). I see there's a nice gamma slider someone just asked about today :)

The new map tools are a real neat touch - all the functionality from SHIII is there, but now they're actually shown as tools lying on the side of your table. Otherwise both the map interface and the main interface are technically identical to SHIII (modded versions of it anyway). The slideout panels on the periscope screen are real nice! The torpedo screen seems to be a separate screen rather than an overlay now.

The damage control looks peculiar - couldn't make out much but I think we can lay to rest the concerns of it not being detailed enough - I saw lots of little items on that screen!

The new additional sprites (water coming out of holes) look much better in motion than they do on screenshots it seems - wahoo!

I needn't splurge about the transparency and other environment effects again. Best thing evar :smug:

Gun & Flak interface looks exactly the same (as SHIII) - different guns, same function.

The boat dives sloooooow. Practice on that IX while you can :p

Hard to say anything about gameplay or AI, largely given the very easy setting he plays at, but so far it doesn't look that distinct from SHIII. Still keeping my fingers crossed for a less predictable AI!

War patrol vs. Quick Mission - I take it there are two types of single missions now? :hmm:

Can anyone comment on the difficulty settings? Looking identical to SHIII so far...

Likewise - anyone ID any ships?

LOL, and I too was irritated by that dinghy popping up in the 'follow' cam - though nice to see they're in game

Good stuff. The most 'hands on' I've seen so far.

Danke für den Link und den Upload!

The moderator is really a nOOb. I still wonder why people are named to test games, yet don't know anything about what they're doing. :p

He says a few things about the awesome graphics and that many annoying things from SH3 were fixed and improved in SH4, like the crew management, the interface and of course the graphics.

Besides that, he attacks a freighter, calling it a destroyer, a small tanker mistaking it for a flattop, he launches torpedoes over 4km and wonders why they didn't hit after 1 minute, says that it was difficult in WW2 to deal with rotten meal, as you couldn't throw it overboard - its a submarine, you know, and it is almost the complete mission under water. Submarines also have an altimeter, 30m is a common depth for periscope, explosions are the best part in SH.

Be glad you don't understand him.... :)

I gota say the graphics are looking great..... only problem i have is the sound of the incoming gun fire.. It still sounds kinda strange. There should be a thunderous roar as heavy battleship shells head towards you. Those shots may have been light machine gun fire though...

also the voices and closing the hatch sounds are almost identical to SH3

I don't think they should make a sound when they're coming in at all, but make a cracking sound when they pass.

The whizzing of shells and bullets is pure hollywood stuff, but I guess the devs were going for that. We can mod the sounds ourselves, it's no problem. I hope they have the "click, click" before the depth charges explode.

I'm pretty sure that you can hear artillery rounds howl over your head. Anybody surving in the military confirm that?

Boris
02-23-07, 04:38 PM
Heres some artillery sounds which appear to be real. They fit the ripping linen description.

http://www.audiolicense.net/sfx/sfx_list.asp?subcat_id=9783

Real sounds always lose their real-life effect somehow when they're recorded though.

This page is pretty good too.

http://www.audiolicense.net/sfx/sfx_list.asp?subcat_id=6681

love the explosion at the end of the first one, now thats a real impact sound. That's what I want my shells to sound like when they hit!

EDIT: the far away bassy impact in the third one is awesome too. It always pisses me off that they never use these real sounds in movies and games, and with speed of sound delay. It's just so much cooler.

Nice sounds Boris, I was a fire direction officer of a 155mm platoon in XVIII ABN Corps in 1st Gulf War. These naval 'rifles' are a different animal than artillery - direct fire vs indirect fire, but the sounds are pretty much the same. The Iraqis actually had better 155s than we did (G5 vs our M198s) They had longer range and smaller CEp (circular error) = more accurate guns, but their fire direction sucked - i.e. even with better guns, they couldn't bring accurate fire on us. They generally missed by a couple hundred meters (short) while exciting for us, that doesn't generate any effects on target. If our rounds were more than 50m off target, that was basically a "miss" unless you're talking ICM with many submunitions scattered over a couple of hundred meters.

What would add a lot to believability is seeing a distant explosion, with a second or two delay before hearing it. I know this has been mentioned previously. Also, the sounds should have that bass, man. It ratttles your guts from the ranges these deck guns would have fired from. Truth is, a good explosion or firing sound at any high volume level, and all of our speakers would themselves explode! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Is it march yet?

Cool story Mylander.

I was in the Army for a bit, and even smaller munitions such as the 66mm rocketlaunchers I fired had quite a bang to them. And the claymores really rattle your guts too.
I think I'll be modding some sounds when this thing comes out... I'll be modding alot of things :D
