If the other prince wanted to go into combat in Iraq (not that Harry will get close to combat) would a direct heir to the crown be convinced not to go?

The Queen's family connections with Germany go back even further. George Ludwig, Elector of Hanover, ascended to the English throne as King George I in 1714. He spoke mainly German and French, and only a little English. George I visited Hanover regularly in order to carry out his royal duties there, and he died in 1727 during one of his visits. The Queen is a direct descendant of King George.
I think it was George II who was the last British monarch to command his troops in battle in Dettingen in 1743.

Yep, they had a ridiculously German name too: Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha... until King George had it changed in 1917 for obvious reasons.

I agree with Neil. This guy is a Man now. I have a lot more respect for Harry. He is growing up to be a true leader. A true Leader leads from the front not the back of the line.

A little OT, but what Linton mentioned got me wiki-ing a bit, and I was surprised to find the Prince Phillip isn't British either... and even more surprised to find that he was born in Greece, into the Royal Family of Greece and Denmark (who I also had no idea were connected). His name was Prince Philippos Andreou.
No wonder the tabloids find the royals so interesting.

Also... the offspring of the Windsors (lizzie and phil) are actually officially called Mountbatten-Windsor, Mountbatten being taken from Philippos's mother's side, who was German (Go figure), and is the Anglicised version of the name (was Battenberg).

Now this only sparked my fancy, because I did a number of ship skins for GWX. Some of you might have spotted some pink destroyers. This was called Mountbatten pink, named after Earl Louis Mountbatten, who was an Admiral in the RN at the time, and thought it was cool to paint some ships pink. As I suspected, he is related, and is infact Phil's uncle.

Yep they got a Nazi in the family.

Who's that then, someone living or dead?

(not that Harry will get close to combat)

Looking back to the Falklands conflict; Prince Andrew took part in combat patrols as co-pilot of a Sea King, at the time he was 2nd in line to the throne (Harry is currently 3rd in line) so I think he may well see combat, although there's doubt over where he'll be sent to the most dangerous areas.

Princess Michael of Kent father was a member of the Nazi party. Granted I should rephrase that as a connection.

Now I know. But what of my question concerning the other prince? What's his name? William?

A true Leader leads from the front not the back of the line.

Well that rules Harry out then as his role on op telic 10 will most likely be in a camp in barsa behind a desk.

Though i have to say that im very impressed to see he acutaly wants to get out on a OP Tour which for a person of his staure is very rare. Well done to the guy, i just wished people would leave him alone so he can get on with his job.

Well, I'd say it's unlikely William would be allowed into the combat zone, unless it's in a very well protected position - somewhere in the area of the UK commander's drinks cabinet (to badly paraphrase Blackadder).

Other members of the Royal family have been in combat including Prince Phillip who served in the med (and was mentioned in dispatches) and King George VI, before he was king, who was a subbie at the battle of Jutland - both on the RN side before anyone asks

Ah yes Prince Phillip. Complete total a*&%hole.

From a bankrupt Grecco Danish Royal family and a diplomatic nightmare.

apparently Andy flew in the Gulf War I IIRC and speaking to one american who served there was no slouch. Still he is a tosser.

Xabbaruss your cell at the tower awaits for such treasonable talk.Philip is a true naval officer having served in WW2 and his uncle Montbatten was blown up by the IRA.

Saxe-Coburg und Gotha was the family name of Queen Victoria's husband.

Actually, William's ineligible to serve in a situation that would remotely bring him near combat because he's second in line to the throne.

Bingo! Queen Victoria's husband.
Apropos bodily fluids:
Man comes home from the doctor: "Disgusting, the doctor asked me for a blood, sperm, urine and faecal probe".
Wife: "Don't tell me. You gave him your old brown wide wale corduroy jacket?"

The Dutch Queen Beatrix had married a German too, Prince Claus.
(in the Royal apartments: )The Dutch Queen Beatrix and her husband, Prince Claus are preparing to go to bed.
Claus: "Mummy, I have met some of my old friends today. Is it okay for you, when I invite them for a barbecue on Sunday?"
Beatrix: "Ok, if it must be. But tell them, they can’t stay that long this time."

Ba-doom, ba-doom, tish!

Back on topic, it looks like he's going then.

Last year, the prince said: "There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country."

Indeed, it's like a double edge blade for him. On one hand he is putting at risk those he is with and on the other hand his unit will respect him more.
