Ok so BDU sent me to patrol AN18, its Jan, 1940 and seeing how i spent my xmas holiday sinking a task force and its fleet carrier i got half way and decided to give my crew a break and came home. When i was shown the captain's log it said i was awarded the Knight';s Cross. I got no renown, no tonnage, nothing for that patrol but yet they gave me a Knights cross? i dont understand it, can some one enlighten me?

This has happened to me also.....I have come back from a pretty lack luster patrol...and they have given me a knights cross or another medal that seems very inappropriate......go figure.....of course I wasnt about to give it back.....:nope:

You would have received renown for completing your patrol. It's quite possible that this renown when added to your current renown took you over the score required to get the Knight's Cross.

Heck, start a new patrol in a new career, don't even move; just exit straight away. Enjoy your promotion and EK2.

Just the way the game is.

Did you get a "Dock at: " option? If so, then that is completing a patrol. Don't get confused with meeting your patrol objectives. They are different renown events.

FWIW I just got an EK1, which I'm not supposed to get until I have 7000 renown. I have 5800 renown. Just the way the game is.

Indeed, search the forums...you'll find many posts exactly like yours over the last two years. :yep:

I have GWX and SH3 Commander, no other mods.

What I believe happens is that you can only get one medal at a time, and they come in a series.

Let's say you had a really good early career patrol - sunk the HMS Hood and a bunch of merchants. You will be awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class, the first in the series. Behind the scenes, I think the game has calculated that you earned enough renown on that first patrol to get all the way up to the German Cross in Gold.

You will continue to get rewarded each medal in the series even if you do nothing but go out, have a bbq on deck, and come back, until whatever magic renown/medal level is reached. This is how it appears to work, anyway.

BTW, there isn't necessarily a direct correlation between kills and winning the Knights Cross. For example, check out:

http://uboat.net/men/brandi.htm

Won "The Diamonds" with only 12 confirmed kills and about 30,000 GRT - doesn't appear to even be in the top 100 most productive U-Boat skippers. He was a damn brave man, that's for sure - not taking anything away from him - but it shows they didn't just simply go down the all-time GRT list and hand out the medals that way.

While its makes for things simple to have the various additions to the RK build upon each other (as well as getting the RK itself) I've always found it to be a really screwed up system. Had (in history) a U-boat captain sunk the Hood like the Bismark did, it seems rediculous that the captain only get a IIRC instead of a RK for such a tremendous achievement. I can appreciate the history behind the RK and RC and the country's reverance for it. Though prior to WWII there was the Blue Max which could be awarded at any time (relevant to any prior decorations already held) seems more sensible to able to have the award match the accomplishment.

I think you're spot on with this. This has always been my understanding of how the SH3 medal system works, regardless of mods.
