I was under the impression that the Tench class was in - it's minor enough a difference from Balao (which is definitely in) to have it as a sub-class along the same lines as we have a IXC vs IXC/40 in SHIII.

The others, namely the V-class you allude to, are not in from what has been told by the devs. I know you want the "Cruiser subs" in, but I'm afraid they're not on the menu...

I hope the Tench is in. Its a great looking sub and from sounds of things was a great improvment over the gato and balao subs.

The Nautilus Class sure are big subs :D but i doubt they will be in game

We will have the 3 main combatant class types. It really is only 3 distinct types:

S Class: WWI design model, really intended for coast defence built in early 20's.

Perch/Salmon/Sargo: Inter-war general purpose design model, built in mid 30's.

Tambor/Gato/Balao/Tench: true Fleet Type designed and intended specifically for a trans-Pacific war against Japan. These were developed and refined continuously through the war. These are the workhorses that really fought the war for the US, as the VII did for Germany.

The experimental cruiser types, the V class boats, are not in the game; I think because the developers found it too costly to model unique, eccentric types. We are very lucky to even have the S-Class.:ping:

Yeah I read that they hadnt been going to include it but popular demand
put it in.

Well the P class was a good boat to fight with in SH the original
I can definately have a lot of fun, but getting a new sub in the
game is going to end up being a priority.

Bass although a slug was a neat looking boat.

By the way, though I don't agree with the choice, what I figure is that the devs thought to big boats to be too exotic and tricky to be properly done in the game. Sort of the same line of thinking where we didn't get a IA or the UA in SHIII, even if they did technically have a solid role in early war.

Personally I hope that the sub-moddability promise transpires and the V-class be one of the first big mods for SHIV! :hmm:

Oh man that would be a double whammy. No Narwhal and Nautilus combined with no ability to mod new sub classes!

As far as the effort it would take to add a U.S. sub class to the game here is an interesting post from an earlier discussion quailified by Elanaiba (last post).

With reference to SH III:

SH III gave you 2 boats that were either not made or never fired a torpedo at the enemy.

3d ewes and ahhhhs aside, IMHO think they are dropping the ball content wise.

New screenies have been released showing the different classes and I'm afraid that we'll only get the Gato/Balao class. The classes we'll apparenty get are:
S-class
Tambor
Gato
Porpoise
Sargo
and
Balao

Since Gato and Balao are shown as different classes I doubt that the Tench class will be an adavancement of the Balao class.
Here's the link to one of the site showing the classes: http://www.marinesims.de/site/silent-hunter-4/sh4-34.html
