View Full Version : Using Short Wave In The Name Of Realism...

I was wondering, for the sake of realism, if anyone else does status reports? Not just after you sink something but everyday. I try to make a position report to BdU everyday at 2100 German Time just for the sake of realism.
Now it hasnt been confirmed one way or the other if using short wave gives away your position in the game but I find it fun. My message room fills up fast though!:dead:
Does anyone know the "real" proceedure that u-boats used? Was it, indeed, a daily position report or was it longer in between?:hmm:

I think it was a daily procedure and a sub was considered lost after 3 days without a report.

Yes radio can indeed give your position away ingame
But I send a report daily as thats how they did it
Circumstances willing of course

Daily reports were the norm. BdU became concerned after a few days of silence, and it was after a week or two that they would list the boat as lost as they figured even with a broken radio, a boat could make port within that time span.

You're probably right, my 3 days look a bit short...:D

Hmm i must be the odd guy out i rarely send reports to Bdu.
Only after sinking a ship and when reaching my patrol grid, and when i am just about 100km from base on my return.

I too give only reports when something of significance has occurred. I don't trust these blasted signals...Doenitz and I agreed upon this method before my 9th patrol, so it's cool with the boss!;)

I only send when I have no torps and when I spot a convoy.

In SH2 you could activate a trigger statement option that would require using the radio, such as someone built a level where you had to find and shadow a convoy and then make a radio contact report every hour for 24 hours. I build a level where you had to spy on an enemy base and make radio reports with in a certain zone before you left that area. SH2 had many more trigger options and so you could create more complex scenarios. For example, in its Bismarck level, you had to pull up along side the Bismarck as it was sailing and get with in 100 yards or something for a certain amount of time to get the log of the Bismarck.
Of course SH2 isn't as pretty as SH3 and the AI was a bit worse. And it had nothing like careers.

Yes, I've always made reports, every day to coincide with the hour nearest my departure time.
I'm not sure, but I think it was sometime around 1942 that they were ordered to stop sending in regular reports.
