OK, I have looked at my CD, and it is all video. I have some video I shot myself on the wreck, and can grab stills, but it seems much easier to do this: http://www.discoverydiving.com/sub_gallery.htm This is the website for the local dive shop here in Beaufort, NC. The U-352 (Type VIIC) is a very cool dive, at about 100 feet. Then our shallow dive was a freighter whose name escapes me, a U-boat victim, but not a victim of the U-352. U-352 was sunk after being "skunked" on her patrol. She mistook the sub chaser USS Icarus, for a freighter at night. She fired her first eel which detonated prematurely, alerting Icarus, which promptly attacked with DCs, forcing the U Boat to surface. In the ensuing gun battle and abandoning of the U-boat, I think 15 of her crew were killed, and the rest captured. It must've sucked, crash-diving to avoid an escort with 100 feet of water under their keel. Herr Kaluein Helmut Rathke, was much despised by his crew.

Hi Andrew,

The site looks good, and I'll look through it shortly. Just posting to let you know that there is an annoying and persistent little dialogue box that pops up that reads "please go to Chris website."

Cheers,
flintlock

Yes, the annoying "go toChris's website" thingy pops up when you mouse over the long pic of the sub. Click the link to his site - he's got some cool shots there.

Andrew

JSF, not talking about either sim - talking about a real WWII sub. Thought there might be some folks interested in that sort of thing here. :)

Absolutely, and thank you for sharing them!

Those are some great photos. That must be a wonderful, yet somewhat errie experience diving that wreck. Andrew, with respect to the comment about the dialogue box: hope I didn't come across as unappreciative as that wasn't my intent. I wasn't sure you were aware of the pop-up, and I didn't realize mousing over the large sub was launching it (rather than clicking "OK," I kept trying to close it - vicious cycle).

Again, appreciate the photos.

Not at all, Flintlock! It took me a few frustrating minutes to figure out why that stupid popup kept popping! It is always eerie to me diving wrecks - even "artificial" ones, but especially "real" ones. It is quite the rush to do so. My father dove some of the Japanese Marus in Kwajelein atoll in about '71. Took 4 sake bottles off of one, which are now in my posession. Kwaj, Truk, etc... have been made "no take" sanctuaries since, but in those days it was legal to salvage 'trophies'. People still take stuff off of the couple of U-Boat wrecks around here. I am kind of torn - part of me says leave it alone, take only photos, but at the same time, some of that stuff can be preserved for posterity if it is brought up and properly preserved. I did not penetrate the U-352 wreck - doing so has had lethal consequences more than once. Any wreck is dangerous to penetrate, and U-Boats are notoriously so.

Andrew
