how can the water be so green and so clear? im not convinced its not been massively doctored.
Just out of interest can anyone make the number out on the side and tally it up with an existing boat?

It`s U24 (S173).

Must be a art impression. Not real when looking at the boats in harbour..

Boris
02-14-07, 11:03 AM
Hehe, not very big are they... like a modern day type II

But looking at the quality of that wreck photo, there's no reason to believe that the uboot isn't real too... after all, its from a site dedicated to underwater photography.

Wow! Those are great pictures Smaragdadler, worth the wait for the download ...

A picture truly is better than a 1,000 words ... I didn't even know the Dutch had it in them to have nice submarines.

I know it's not a cafe next to them on the pier, but wouldn't that be cool to tie up next to a cafe
say in Nice, France and say, "Yep, that's my boat babe ... would you like to take a tour"?

Seems U24 is the U-Boot cheerleader girl of these days. She is on every official Bundeswehr sub-pic that I can find.

Dont know if it is doctored ... have a look at this one from the same page. This pic was taken in a german lake not the baltic see...

It is a "submarine".

Created at a cost of more than U.S. $100,000, the 14-foot-long (4.3-meter-long) contraption is designed to look and move as much like the real thing as possible. It carries a single passenger, who fits inside lying down, propped up on elbows to navigate and observe.

A single diver controls the cameras (shown at far left in yellow) and pilots Fabien Cousteau's shark-shaped sub.

As this diagram shows, the contraption is more of a costume than a vehicle—complete with wagging tail for propulsion. And the pilot is as much diving as he is driving. The interior is filled with water, and all breathing is done scuba-style but with rebreathers, equipment that eliminates bubbles that might blow the diver's cover.

Just to avoid any misunderstandings here, geetrue; the pictures are of German Type 206 submarines, the small ones. The big boat moored in the harbour is a Dutch 'Walrus' Class (ocean going conventional attack submarines).

This painting shows Otto Kretschmer's U23 in November 1939. Two magnetic mines have just been fired from the bow torpedo tubes hoping to snare unaware Allied ships.

I know this is a painting, but I could not resist. The caption and painting come from this site: http://www.subart.net/mining.htm

the first 206 picture looks like it was here in Florida's Lake Apopka. You'll melt in 15 minutes in that lake...

And just what is that big buldge on the bow of the 206? Sonar?

Ok, what are magnetic mines and why don't we have them in SH3?

What kindof sub is that?

02-14-07, 06:54 PM
My guess is its a collins class - just the shape of the conning tower, and the little extra bit on the back of it..

Good guess.

Here's another pic of a Collins Class sub:

What is that small pointy thing on the bow?

baggygreen
02-14-07, 09:51 PM
I understand that its a directional sonar mount, similar to a narrow-band radar in the fact you are able to focus on a particular bearing, down to only a few degrees.

This is based on what a mate of mine in the navy told me, and for all i know it could be completely and utterly false, but i'll happily stand corrected!
