Hehe, not very Aussie of me to say this, but New and VB are the worst beers on the planet, bar maybe Bud or MGD.
Carlton is a good pub beer, and Cascade is up there with Australias best. They make the best Aussie beer in Van Diemen's land. In fact the best stock beer you can get in Australia, if only because of it's price to awesomeness ratio, is Tasman bitter. Apparently it's Boag's under a different label, and only 30 bucks a slab. Only available at Coles liquorland though.

@ Takeda... thats the stuff! Franziskaner deserves to be ranked among the worlds top beers. I like Weissbier. Erdinger and Paulaner are pretty good too.

As for a good stock standard drinking beer... Becks is ok, I like the Bavarian ales such a Löwenbräu, Spaten etc...

Apart from Franziskaner, over here I drink Holsten, and when out on the town (because of it's cheapness) Astra, which I guess would be Hamburg's VB.

I support New because Its the cheapest beer to buy at the pub i frequent - and at least its drinkable unlike MB, or Tooheys Old. VB, well i drink that watchin me mates playin cricket - hard to beat a case of stubbys whilst wearing a beater and a pair of stubbies, sittin on a hill watchin cricket in the sun!

I bet you that this beer is pretty bad. Probably more a Cru or barely wine since getting more than 10% alc is neer impossible unless using ice brewing methods where they freeze the beer and take the water out leaving the alc. The beer I post above is as close as you can get alc wise without turning into a pretty gross sryup without using ice techniques.

120 Minute IPA

Availability: limited - 3 releases scheduled for 2007
Release Date: Jan, May, Sept. 2007

Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45-degree plato, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continuously hopped with high-alpha American hops, then dry-hopped daily in the fermenter for a month & aged for nother month on whole-leaf hops!!! Our 120 Minute I.P.A. is by far the biggest I.P.A. ever brewed! At 20% abv and 120 ibus you can see why we call this beer THE HOLY GRAIL for hopheads!

I had a Bud once when I was in America and although less alcoholic than an Australian beer it was just as bad. I'm sure some of the smaller micro-breweries in USA make as good beer as anywhere. That the case with our beers. For starters, no Aussie actually drinks Fosters... But then again the so called popular beers are a disgrace.

Anyone who has tries Victoria Bitter should agree with me on that.

It was a sad day when thet stopped making "Lion Larger", but of the above 'Pilsner Urquell' is my favourite.

The Belgian Huyghe family brewery, this particular one is called Delirium Nocturnum. A good one, might have to get more of it and age it properly. I will finish this 750ml bottle after a day of drinking, oh yes, I will (at 8% abv).

Where did you pick that brew up Subman, is it local?

PD
A good Delerium is not a bad beer to have at times. I kind of like it. It does have an aftertaste that kind a brings a great beer down to a good beer though. Just my opinion of it.

The 120 min IPA is not local. It is out of Milton, Deleware. It is hard to find because of it's limited production (It's kind of rare and expect to pay $8 to $10 for a 12 ounce bottle). You have to find a place that sells rarer beers. I'm graced with them in the PNW - you can find good beer anywhere here! I bought my last two 120 min IPA's from a grocery store called Central Market! :D I take it you may need to find yourself a good beer store though that specializes in harder to find beers though. Assuming you found a store that sells Delerium, which is in itself if not very common, I think you should do OK in finding a 120 min IPA at some point.

The historical background of the Beer Purity Law

Beer Purity Law - culmination of a long legal development

http://members.aol.com/carlaac1/private/victor/reinheit.jpg

The Beer Purity Law is the oldest currently applicable food regulation in the world.

It is also the outcome of a legal development reaching back several centuries in Germany, whereby the relevant legal authorities and bodies strove with their various decrees to improve the quality of beer, a staple item in the popular diet. Similar regulations are also to be found outside Germany and in the mists of early pre-Christian antiquity.

First documented beginnings in Germany: Augsburg 1156

The first documented references on German soil date from the reign of Barbarossa. In 1156 the Emperor gave the City of Augsburg a new statute, the famous "Justitia Civitatis Augustensis", which is the oldest German town charter. And it gets down to the business of beer: "A publican who serves bad beer or gives short measure shall suffer punishment ..." The punishment, incidentally, was quite considerable, in the amount of 5 Gulden. The licence was withdrawn on a third offence.

Nuremberg 1393

A further regulation is known from the City of Nuremberg. In 1393 the local City Council decided to use only malted barley for the brewing of beer. Some 30 years later, in 1420, Munich Town Hall decided to store or "lager" the brew before sale.

Regensburg 1447

In 1447 the good people of Regensburg engaged their Municipal Physician to inspect the locally brewed beer and to take particular interest as regards the ingredients used in the brewing of beer. His alarming reports led to a Brewing Regulation in 1453.

Munich 1363

The people of Munich were also concerned about the quality of their beer in 1363. They charged 12 members of the City Council with the task of beer quality assurance. And in 1447, they expressly instructed the brewers to use only malted barley, hops and water for the brewing of beer; "... und sonst nichts darein oder darunter tun oder man straffe es fuer valsch" - and neither add nor subtract any ingredient lest it be treated as a case of adulteration.
40 years later Duke Albrecht IV confirmed the demand of the Munich City Council, for he had seen that the beer trade in North Germany was flourishing mainly because the local brewers' guilds insisted on the production of good quality beer.

Weißensee (Thuringia) 1434

In 1998 mediaeval Runneburg in Thuringian Weißensee delivered up a hitherto unknown document on the subject of beer purity. Article 12 of the Tavern Law "Statuta thaberna" of 1434 states that beer may not be brewed except with hops, malt and water. It goes on to impose penalties for offences against the rules of the brewer's art.

Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut 1493

A little later, in 1493, Duke George the Wealthy followed suit and decreed this rule for his entire Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut, the old Bavarian heartland: "Brewers and others shall use only malted barley, hops and water for the brewing of beer; brewers, publicans and others adding any other ingredients to the beer are liable to incur physical and material punishment."
All these decrees were duly controlled: beer inspectors paid regular visits to the brewers, tasted and tested the beer. They themselves were bound by strict regulations and were not allowed to undertake more than six inspections in one day. On inspection days they were also not allowed to eat foods that might affect the taste buds, or drink wine or even smoke tobacco

Usually in the pub I order a Guiness to start. Out here in Canada its luridly expensive but it is wonderful. Its very heavy, but as Inspector Morse said "its a meal". I don't buy much else since usually some fool gets a pitcher or two of cheap cheap Canadian beer. Thank god that in Canada the beer is pretty good even when its cheap.

*shakes head in shame at Americans*:nope:

But I did have a nice Belgian White once. At least that what I think it was. Very interesting.

I remember watching a program where a group of "experts" were travelling the world, looking for the best beers in each country. Australia almost failed to qualify, saved only by "Coopers" (and only just) if I recall correctly.

Also, Coopers is the only beer in Australia (that I know of), that is naturally brewed. All others are a chemically enhanced brew, and give me a major gutache.

Best lager: Primus (one of the few still battling against the Inbev brewery monopoly)
Other:
- Palm Royale (very different, and better, than regular Palm)
- Kasteelbier Blond (a good blonde strong beer)
- Troubadour (an even better blonde beer, but not as strong :))
- Temmerman Gueuze Lambic (not everyone's taste, quite sour but very refreshing)

Poland: Tyskie
