what type of uboat is that in that movie, it seems very large so is it a ix or xxi or what?

Not really sure what type of German submarine she was supposed to represent. Possibly a long range Type IX. The submarine itself was actually the ex-US WW2 submarine Tilefish of the Balao class. She was sold to the Venezulan Navy in the 1950s and renamed Carite.

For her role in the 1971 movie the Carite was modified by the addition of a "cigarette deck" aft of her sail and was painted in a "dazzle" camouflage pattern. Carite was decommissioned by the Venezuelan Navy on January 28th 1977, and cannibalized for spare parts. Hugo didn't get her. :p
