Finally I've had the chance to take on a Flower Corvette.... and won. Sank the little sh*t with our deckgun. The gunnars all deserve a medal for it too.

Mind you this occured on 7th patrol Dec 16th, 1940 at 23:10 in Grid AL6. We'd just sunk another nosey FC in AM15 just before this, and this FC comes looking to see what happened. We had started to outrun it but being the idiot I am, turned to fight. Seeing the range was over 5000 meters we turn into it with gun crew at the ready. At 3800 meters I had them open fire on the Command deck and then her guns. She turned tail to run but then turned back to face us giving us a great broadside to shoot at. A few of her shots got thru and did some damage to Control Tower and Hull. We tried to turned away to open up the distance a bit, continued to fire scoring numerous hits, but she turned into us to close the distance. Finally at 23:12 Observers on the bridge shouted "She's Going Down!".

Never tried this before and figured this was as good a chance as any to see how good the gunners were. They did alright for firing on their own, but even when it was sinking they wanted to keep on firing.

Now it's on to jump ahead of the convoy to nail that big Revenge Class Battle Wagon, a Great Lakes Transport and a nice fat juicy Whaling Factory ship.

To be continued.... I hope.

Thanks fellow Kaptains. ~S!~

I'd read someplace before that you could outrun a Flower Corvette with a Type IX sub. It seems to work ok but.... I had to try and take one on. ;) Curiosity got the best of me. As long as you can stay out of or at the fringe of it's gun's range you can survive, tho you might take a few hits.

The crew will get extra rations for their bravery and medals for the gun crew. Come to think of it, I've never seen Bernard turn such a ghastly shade of white before. And that smell :nope: ....... :hmm: He's now supervising the loading the external torpedos into the fore AND aft compartments. Once finished with the loading, I think the crew plans to throw him overboard. :yep:

IIRC, top speed of the Flower is 15 Knts or around... so if you start outside of its gun range, it's well possible to outrun it.

Them'd be Brass Cajones!!!

When you get your Knight's Cross you may want to consider backing off on the caffine. Rumour is, your crew would be a little less jumpy.

Way to go... score one for the Jerrys!

I'm wondering if the GWX Deck Gun is a little too powerful though, but perhaps it's inaccuracy makes up for it. I used it manually on a Pyro Ammo ship and Steamer on my last patrol, both 7,000 tonners. Each took about 5 or 6 successful hits to sink with no muss, no fuss. "She's going down" right here and now! Anyway...

Cheers to our galant U-boat man GT182!

Don't dicount the damage the 20mm can do to you. I was deckgunning some merchant in a harbour and two of them had 20mm guns (nothing bigger). By the time I'd finished I had run my repair crew ragged. I found out when I got home that I had only 11% hull integerty left!:o

OUCH!!!:damn:

After breaking off from the convoy, we headed east to reload from externals. 2 days later we encountered the same convoy. This time no escorts are seen... Worked our way in for the Revenge Class BB. Fired 3 torpedos with only 2 hits. Fired 1 more and down she went.

While we had the reloads might as well try for 2 more. 2 Whaling Ships were just the other side of the BB, so what the heck. Took them both out of the war.

Then the trouble startes. Back behind the convoy trying to keep up are 2 Great Lakes Freighters. They're no problem but then the sonarman calls out 2 warships closing. Looking thru the scope we see 2 Flower Corvettes bearing down on us from a distance. Time to run and run we did. Ordered the deckgun crew topside to fire on closing Corvettes. Being a bit over confident they think the Freighters are firing on us. They fire back and end up taking out one of the Freighters.... I thought we got rid of Bernard. Meanwhile the Corvettes are closing. We dive and head for 120 meters at Flank. At 120 they're on top of us dropping DCs as fast as they can. We change course and take a can in the fore bunks/torpedo room area. Flooding is fixed and finally we go "Silent" at 1kt. After a few twists and turns "Full Stop" is called and we sit patiently. Both Corvettes run back and forth dropping DCs with us in the center.

All miss and after 45 minutes of not "seeing" us they head off to join the convoy..... And we slip away to head for Lorient, making it home for the Christmas holidays and the New Year.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/GT182/TroubleLeaving.jpg

Back at Lorient the gun crew received their Iron Crosses and promotions. I received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and was promoted to Kapatan Leutnant. Total tonnage for this patrol was 73,435. I at least made the 73,000 club. ;) The crew gets the right to Howl after this patrol.

Yeah Brag they sure can, seeing that's the second BB sunk by my crew in this career. Tho they're getting nervous about 1941 and what's in store for them. Maybe we'll have to head for the Carribean for some R&R soon. ;)
