Finally!
Nuclear disarmament deal reached with N. Korea (http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/02/13/nkorea.talks/index.html)
North Korea agrees to shut down its main nuclear reactor within 60 days
The country will receive an initial 50,000 tons of fuel oil or financial aid
It will receive another 950,000 tons for irreversibly disabling the reactor
Bit of a surprise, but very good news.
It's certainly a step in the right direction, and the best news in a while, maybe they've finally realised that their Typodonkeys can't hit the wide side of a barn.
Good work negociators!

indeed good work but we'll see what actually happens. they probably already built another facility somewhere. Im a bit sceptical of anything involving Kim Jong Il

The question is will this last? Good news for now but treat with caution.

I think that is the name (incorrect spelling intended I assume) of the North Korean missile that has been tested of recent. At least I think that is what Oberon was getting at. :-?

Great news on the surface, but it's not finished yet. John Bolton says the deal is not much better than the one they had in 1994 that North Korea didn't keep, but it's better than letting them continue to stock pile more weapons grade material.
Here's a quote from USA Today:
David Albright, head of the Institute for Science and International Security, a Washington think tank, said North Korea has produced enough plutonium for as many as 12 bombs. It tested a nuclear device for the first time in October
What about this dirty dozen?

Last time I checked, a nuke only needs to be in the general area to do its dirty work, so hitting the barn door is not needed. A few miles from the barn door will work just fine! :D

What if the barn door is made of steel and reinforced concrete?

Doesnt really matter, we are blowing up the barn here, not the door. ;)

It might matter if it were buried 300 + feet below the surface of the Earth, but if that barn door is still on top - a few miles is still OK! :)

What's sad is that this was the initial deal that Bill Clinton's administration had already setup before GWB took over and made everything worse. :nope: :dead:
Good thing that he finally figured out that his approach was flunking and sucked it up enough to go back to what was working.

Yeah, back to the process of rewarding bad behavior.:damn:
Note, that NK has already declared that they are putting nukes on hold for the moment. Which means when they want more free stuff given to them, they'll do it all over again.

To play devils advocate - maybe he is right? And another thought, so what if N. Korea has the bomb? They have no way to miniturize it yet for installation on a missile. They are 100 years practically at their rate from being able to fully grasp what it is they need to do to make it any real threat.
Maybe we should also let Iran have their bomb? Maybe So should the Saudis, and so should Syria. Give them bomb to all of them! Trust me - they will nuke themselves with it and we will be done with the Middle East once and for all. This may not bode well for Isreal, but I am confident the crafty Isrealies will find a technological means to protect itself from its overly aggressive neighbors. Lasers and nuke detectors are making great strides and should be ready for any kind of threat for them.
I think my plan is the best way forward.

We should put a condition: North Korea can have the bomb if Kim steps down and let his people eat. Hungry people are dangerous, they may feel dizziness and weakness and let the bomb fall...

If it is true that they already have enough plutonium created to build " a dirty dozen", then this deal earns them what they need most: the time to set the plan into reality. The facility to create plutonium then obviously is no longer needed. Mark this day in you calender: Skybird agrees with Bolton's criticism for once. I think that american foreign policy here jumps from one extreme to the opposite extreme. But who says that that is any better? - If the nuclear test last year was a fake, and/or there is no plutonium stock in N-Korea, then this treaty will be good news, if both sides stick to it. If one side abandones it, it was not worth the ink to write it down.

Right now, I'm not too concerned with NK's Nuclear program.
1) Their Typodongs/"typodonkeys" don't work. All crashed into the ocean within 1 minute of flight.
and 2) Their first nuclear test was a failure.
All in all, I think they have a better chance of accidentally nuking themselves than sending one accross the pond.

did you actually count all of them? :o And 127 is small. Something wrong, Sky?:o :o
This seems more like a band-aid for the problem than a true solution (much like the last agreement) but at least it seems like a step in the right direction. I only wish the administration hadn't been so stubborn and taken so long to make it happen.
